Palin "whisked away" on plane immediately, headed back to Alaska
I missed part of this on MSNBC, so listen for it and help fill in the blanks, k?

They said the McCain campaign says nobody is going to see Sarah Palin in Alaska or the nation until at least the middle of next week.

Various excuses being offered - needs to see son off to war, needs time to practice and prepare, etc. But "just as they whisked her away from AK in the dead of the night, so she returns."

What the hell is going on with these people?

105. He's 1/8 Native. One freaking eighth. Please. I'm 1/8 Native
(1/16 Menominee, 1/16 Shawnee) but I don't talk about it, don't think about it, and don't make public claims about it--this post notwithstanding :) Why, you ask? Because culturally I'm as white as anyone. I had 2 native great great grandmothers. I don't feel native, don't look Native. I think it would be silly for me to go around claiming I were.

I feel the same way about him. They trotted out the "he's Inuit" line to make him interesting. He's still not interesting.

80. But don't you know that is BAD for us
if that is what is happening. The more they cannot talk to her, the more they want to, thus creating a media feeding frenzy, thus creating huge interest in her first interview, etc.... They could easily be playin it like that. Or maybe like some have suggested on here they had to get thru the convention and now is when the campaign decides if she is staying or being replaced... and how to do that without getting killed by the "base."

18. I had first read something like that as well
yet at some point today, it was announcd that she was canceling an appearance (I thought they said MI?), followed by McCain's cancellation of that Habitat for Humanity get together.

So if she had scheduled appearances that they had to cancel, this move back to AK was NOT part of the original plan. Surely, the family values woman knew her son was leaving on 9/11, as she has repeatedly told us this at every opportunity. Her scheduled appearance Monday means to me that his leave taking wasn't so much a big deal when she planned that (and she could have made it back for the 11th anyway).

So, what really made them move so fast to hide Sarah back in her own state for the near term? The possibilites are endless, aren't they?

86. Haven't you heard? No press conferences will be allowed
Palin will not answer any specific questions about foreign policy or domestic policy. She will make speeches, she will read her scripts and perform. I think the next drinking game should be "pitbull with lipstick" - how many times will she reuse that "clever ad lib"?

No Questions, Please. We'll Tell You What You Need To Know.

ccording to Nicole Wallace of the McCain campaign, the American people don't care whether Sarah Palin can answer specific questions about foreign and domestic policy. According to Wallace -- in an appearance I did with her this morning on Joe Scarborough's show -- the American people will learn all they need to know (and all they deserve to know) from Palin's scripted speeches and choreographed appearances on the campaign trail and in campaign ads. Here's the exchange: (video at link)

26. Here is one mean thought
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 11:46 PM by DeschutesRiver
didn't I read here today in a thread that someone called into the Stephanie Miller show, claim his brother worked the the National Enquirer, and that a far, far worse story was going to come out in next week's edition? Along with a claim from NE itself that a "larger story was to follow this week's"?

ETA: I can't even believe a campaign is being run like this, one step ahead of a reporter from the National Enquirer, no less. A candidate who flees in the night to escape scrutiny and legitimate questions - I mean, she told big fat whoppers in her acceptance speech. Did she not give a thought to those chickens coming home to roost?

44. Update on that
she was scheduled for a depo, agreed to show up for it, and now has refused to do so for a variety of tactical delaying reasons.

First claimed executive privilege, then her lawyer came up what he thinks is a clever trick of having Sarah file an ethics complaint against herself, thus seeking to remove jurisdiction from the panel setup to hear it (bi-partisan, as I understand) and via this ethics complaint, give it to a state personnel board comprised of either people she appointed or that her predecessor appointed, but with whom she has deep connections. So that she can perhaps have control over the result she gets.

Nutshell version as I have understood it (and as a retired lawyer, who admittedly doesn't have all the facts, it just seems to be a boneheaded waste of time, which may end up giving Palin a bad rap for trying to evade the process with which she had at one point agreed to comply).

As for the rest, ie the stated reasons why, and the speculation of what might be the real reasons? Those are guesses, or just rumors, at this point anyway. I am thinking we will get a confirm next week re why she cancelled a Monday appearance and suddenly blew out of town, esp. when her boy was always scheduled to leave on 9/11.

And her excuse doesn't make any sense. She drops her 4 month old baby like a hot potato to run for VP, but she needs a week to say goodbye to her 18 year old son? Please.

Palin being swept out of St. Paul and off to the secret bunkers in the great white north is a clear indication that something has gone terribly wrong.

Selecting Palin for VP was the championship win for the republicans, and after such a win, the team is supposed to go enjoy the victory with their fans. The ticker tape is supposed to rain down on the winning team, and the fans are supposed to celebrate in person with the players and show their love and support.

Rather than indulging the republican base with the excitement that McCain and Palin created for the past few days, they are sending the bench warmer out to meet the fans by himself.

While Palin will be shuffled into the deep dark of the AK safe-houses, McCain, who has begun to play 2nd fiddle to Palin, will be sent onto the campaign trail to convery a message that had a serious disconnect from that which stoked the fire and furor of the republicans during their convention. McCain wasn't the red-meat hurler that the rest of the speakers were. The mud-slinging, moose-hunting mother from the wild frontier will sit this one out while the less exciting, retrospective POW will take this race on by himself, without his first-stringer.

I cannot imagine this will bode well, either for the republican supporters who are expecting to see both McCain and Palin at appearances over the next few days, or for the Palin family and their cleaners who have been in AK for the last couple days conducting damage control.

The winning team should never avoid the opportunity to celebrate their success with their fans, unless of course that winning did something they should be ashamed of and are resorting to smoke and mirrors, but that usually only happens in the minor leagues.

146. I've TOLD y'all! It really IS moose season!
Alaskan Moose Hunts The moose season in general runs from as early as the 1st of September until as late as the 20th of September, depending on the hunting unit. Legal horn size varies between units, but has been for the most part a 50 inch spread or 4 brow tines.
With this restriction in force for the past several years, we have started to see a large number of bulls in the 60 + inches class.

This restriction, combined with the mild winters has resulted in excellent survival among the older bulls, which should give our recommended registered guides outstanding trophy moose hunting for the upcoming seasons.

Price Range: $9,500 to $14,000 (Fully Guided)

152. I see the CNN ticker saying they are headed to WI
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 10:05 AM by DeschutesRiver
I can't explain it. I still think the part I saw was discussing her not coming back to the lower 48 until middle of next week, and there was a ticker saying she had cancelled the WI appearance (I had seen that part earlier). I don't know what the hell is going on anymore. Change of mind? Too many bad comments about her running away?

The part I saw was maybe a couple minutes of discussion, with the strange excuse of seeing her son off and tieing up loose ends, because she had left Alaska for the nomination process in such a hurry.

Whatever I heard, nonetheless it sounds like they must have switched back to the original agenda.

ETA: If she is showing up in WI, instead of what was reported at one point last night, then I consider it good news. I would much rather have her on the stump, with reporters forcing the issue of making the vp nominee act like a grownup and answer questions, than worry about just how wierd our election got with her going off to hide in AK.

154. Update from the DU political video forum here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=182027&mesg_id=182027

Has the video of Fineman on MSNBC discussing how Palin is going back to AK "taking a timeout from the campaign trail". So I did hear that correctly last night.

Who knows if they had it right, or the McCain camp gave disinfo to make them look dumb or if they were wrong. I haven't watched this version on youtube because I am a dialup victim.

158. I heard McCain, but just missed Palin
someone else here said it was a repeat mostly of her convention speech.

I don't know what made them stick to the schedule, instead of heading back home like Fineman reported, but I'd like to think it is because she will be answering someone's questions. Anyone's questions, really. I wonder if she took questions after this rally, or if they have just moved her to the next venue.

What a thing - never expected that we could actually even come this close to being saddled with someone with no meaningful qualifications, who pops out cutsey one liners (most of which aren't true, and need to be questioned), and then ducks and hides from our press.

That said, I still think McCain has made a series of blunders this week from which he will not recover.

159. And the speeches are Not written by her, but for her. She is such a SOB that she really knows
how to deliver mean, nasty lines.

Sarah Palin came to where she is by plans made by fundies years ago. Start on the PTA, get elected to school boards to smaller office holding positions and then go as high as you can, mostly under stealth. She is a great success for them and it is very scary.
