They move around in rarefied circles. They chat with the upper crust.
And they think they aren't just a little right leaning. These "media Stars" feel at home with McCain, with Bush, with all the millionaire Senators and Congresspeople. It is an incestuous relationship. It can't be helped.
And once you understand this, it becomes easy to see why David Gregory can grill a press secretary but tread lightly around the people in power. He doesn't want to be Donahued. He wants his place at the table because, I believe he believes, that he is offering an unbiased voice to the people.
The root of this problem is that there is no demarcation between pundits, reporters and the GOP. They are all highly paid and they will not put their lively hood on the line just to make a point. They know the GOP and the media moguls are part of a tight nit group that rarely allows democrats in. That is why they are tougher on the Dem's than they are on the GOP.
Look how long it took them to turn on the Bush Administration.
Look how quickly they embrassed Sarah.
In the end it really is about job security for both the GOP and the national media elites.
It's probably a little more complicated than that, but the talking heads are never going to cozy up to the Democrats. It's just not in their best interests.
