This can't be true...and yet...(McCain speech background)
from Talking Points Memo:

A lot of people were asking tonight: what the hell was that mansion up behind John McCain tonight during the first part of the speech? As I noted below, the TV close-ups only showed McCain's head against the grass in the picture, which made it look like he was reprising his famed green screen performance. And when they panned out, it looked like McCain was showing off one of his mansions.

Well, several readers have written in to tell me that the building is actually the main building on the campus of the Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, California. And sure enough, this page on the school's website makes it pretty clear that they're correct.

You can compare below ...

So it's not a mansion, but a middle school. But that still doesn't answer the question of why they picked this picture to have him standing in front of -- when I would imagine that 99.9% of the US population would have no idea what they were looking at.

...snip...

Late Update: I'm surprised this hadn't occurred to me. But several readers have suggested that perhaps one of the tech geeks charged with setting up the audio/visual bells and whistles for the evening was tasked with getting pictures of Walter Reed Army Medical Center but goofed and got this instead. At first I thought, No, that's ridiculous. This is a major political party with big time professionals putting this together. Nothing is left to chance. I mean, is this the RNC or a scene out Spinal Tap or Waiting for Guffman? I still have a bit of a hard time believing they're quite that incompetent. But when you figure in what appears to be the utter lack of any logic for this school being behind McCain and the fact that it has 'Walter Reed' in its name, I'm really not sure you can discount this possibility.

1. I was just about to post this...
It just can't be true, but nothing about it makes sense otherwise.

Giving the benefit of the doubt I thought maybe it was a school to tie into the education theme. But would they really choose a school in Hollywood, and would it be coincidental that of all the schools in america they pick on from the land of sin that just HAPPENS to have the same name as a VA medical hospital?

5. As I understand it, this is the only school in the US
named in honor of Dr Walter Reed and I think to use the hospital as a backdrop requires specific permissions where as a school named in his honor requires only state permission. At least this is what I was told. But who knows.

8. Nonsense...
Walter Reed Army Hospital is a public building, and, as a public building, images of it can be used for editorial purposes without restrictions. (As a photographer, I have to know these things.)

11. Even if that thing about the hospital is true...
..it's idiotic that they would instead use a middle school and assume everyone made the connection.

It seems like pretty much unless the visual coincided with the education portion of his speech that it must have been a gaffe.

27. He was?

Look, this "personal stuff" is getting out of hand.

In 2000 and 2004 we all learned that Vietnam vets are unqualified to be president. I received one of those nasty rumor emails this morning that said that McCain was a Vietnam vet. Let's leave the personal attacks out of this.

15. Their entire set SUCKED, big time
Hubby and I were talking about it since the first day. What irked me the most was the constant aqua color that radiated off the giant screen. Nothing about their stage was appealing at all. And compared to the DNC, it didn't seem that they had much of a budget to work with. Or maybe they just splurged on balloons and confetti?

28. Well.. at least they didn't have to roll the "columns back to the storage room in Hollywood"..
Worst Line Ever. Palin should be smacked.

If the republicans are going to make a joke about the A+ Production that the Dem's put on (for 85,000 no less) perhaps they should focus on not fucking up their own little party a week later.

THEY. DON'T. CARE.

And THAT is the message we should be sending.

29. What a blunder! Copyrighted picture used without permission?
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 08:51 AM by johnlal
1. Using the picture without explanation makes it look like he is standing in front of the many mansions-- an issue that gave him a black eye in the news.

2. The picture turns out to be Walter Reed middle school. Somebody got the wrong picture. He looks stupid.

3. The whole debacle reminds us that our veterans were mistreated at Walter Reed Medical Center by the Republicans.

Who in the McCain campaign would have thought this to be a good idea?

I would also point out that there is a possibility for more embarrassment... It appears that the picture was used without attribution to its photographer. I would also guess that they didn't have permission from its creator to use it for political purposes, since they didn't even know what the picture was.
