The Wilson Sisters Send "Cease & Desist Order" To The Republican Party

Heart condemns McCain-Palin use of 'Barracuda'
Posted: 08:41 AM ET

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) — Blasting through the Republican convention hall is the 1977 hit "Barracuda" by rock band Heart.

It's a shout-out to Sarah Palin. When she played basketball in high school, the soon-to-be Republican vice presidential nominee earned the nickname "Sarah barracuda" for her fierce competitiveness.

Some of her opponents revived the "Sarah barracuda" nickname after she became mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, in 1996, defeating a three-term incumbent.

UPDATE: Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said Thursday night that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign over their use of 'Barracuda.'

"We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We
hope our wishes will be honored,"
the group said in a statement that said they "condemn" the use of the song at the Republican convention.

1. What about JP Fogarty? When I heard 'put me in coach' at the end
my memory dredged up something that told me Fogarty was a real left winger from Brooklyn. Anybody know?

2. Perhaps they can play this John Fogerty song at the RNC
George is in the jungle
Knockin’ on the door
Come to get your children
Wants to have a war

Come on, lord you’d better run,
Be a long dark night before this thing is done

Brownie's in the outhouse
Katrina on the line
Government's a disaster
But George, he says it’s fine

Come on, lord you’d better run,
Be a long dark night before this thing is done

Rummy's in the kitchen messin’ with the pan
Dickie’s in the back stealing everything he can
Come on, Lord you’d better run,
Be a long dark night before this thing is done

You better run, you better run,
Lord you better run, Lord you better run,

Runnin’ down the highway
Shoutin’ to the Lord
George's got religion
And you know he can’t afford more, yeah

Come on, Lord you’d better run
Be a long dark night before this thing is done
Be a long dark night before this thing is done, oh Lord

5. Fogarty is not from Brooklyn, however
he'd surely be ticked to hear his song played there. He is a leftie. He did benefit concerts for the Kerry campaign, and performed Fortunate Son right in front of Bushes at the SuperBowl 4 years ago.

3. When I heard them play that song last night
I turned to Mrs. Voice and said "There is no way in hell Ann and Nancy Wilson approved that -- no way."

What is up with the GOP and their disregard of property rights and the law?

10. They should stick with Mozart, he can't say stop, although he might. Beethoven
would totally say stop and probably send out his neighbors for revenge.

8. Heart Rocks!
Not just musically anymore either.
i doubt that the rethugs can find any music worth a shit that the artist will allow them to play. Hopefully they will be reduced to the realm of music in the public domain.

14. I think the Wilsons did a side project
a few years ago under the name Peacemongers. That ought to shed light on their political leanings.

God I love those women.

15. Best. Statement. Ever. -- "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women.
We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

18. I think it's funny that they have an unerring ability to pick music from musicians who don't
agree with their policies or stance on most things. So far in this election cycle we have Van Halen and Heart giving the cease and desist smack down.

19. This is the RNC tactic - use the song first so they get the effect they want
The RNC wanted a song to promote their image that Palin was a 'tough-as-nails' woman who wasn't going to take any shit. Heart was a hard rocking group with 2 women who fronted the band and the song has a powerful riff that could helpe promote that RNC image. RNC probably vetted enough to realize that the Wilson sisters were democrats but figured they'd use it anyways because the real damage wouldn't happen until a few days after Palin would be done speaking. The RNC got away once again with co-opting music with no skin off their back. What's a 'cease & desist' mean when they got their song & image out there.

20. Van Halen is a little pissed too:`
First, on August 29, just minutes before revealing Palin as his running mate, McCain strutted out onto a stage in Dayton, Ohio, as Van Halen's inspirational 1991 track "Right Now" boomed through the speakers. Hours later, the band's publicist told MTV News that Van Halen had no idea McCain would be using the track, and "had they asked, permission would not have been granted."

23. I remember when Clinton was running for re-election in 1996
He did a rally at the Pike Place Market and the Wilson sisters played ahead of time - IN THE RAIN. I didn't even go, it was raining so hard, but there they were (saw it on TV), singing a bunch of great songs (I remember in particular they sang the Simon & Garfunkel song "America").

I wish Heart had sued for damanges. The McCain camp must have known full well they didn't have rights to that song.

I think John Fogerty finally got the rights back to his songs. I kind of remember hearing that.

25. Yes at wiki
Rolling Stone wrote: "The title track is Fogerty's indictment of the Iraq war as another Vietnam, a senseless squandering of American lives and power". On the album, Fogerty squeezed 10 songs into only 34 minutes.

The sale of Fantasy Records to Concord Records in 2004 ended the 30+-year estrangement between Fogerty and his former label as the new owners took steps to restore royalty rights Fogerty gave up in order to be released from his contract with Fantasy in the mid 1970s.
