Heart asks McCain campaign to cease using "Barracuda." This is the eighth artist to snub him.
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 09:54 AM by Occam Bandage
Thursday afternoon, Heart e-mailed out a statement regarding vice-presidential candidate Sarah "Barracuda" Palin's use of their similarly monikered song at the Republican National Convention: "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission," it read. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

But after McCain finished his speech accepting the GOP's presidential nomination tonight, Palin joined him on stage, and the song was used again: Heart's "Barracuda" played as balloons fell. With that elephant in the room, Heart's Nancy Wilson felt compelled to personally respond. "I think it's completely unfair to be so misrepresented," she said in a phone call to EW.com after the speech. "I feel completely f---ed over." She and sister Ann Wilson then e-mailed the following exclusive statement:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

So, Jackson Browne, Mike Myers, Frankie Valli, Van Halen, and now Heart have complained about McCain's flagrant disregard for their copyrights. So have Chuck Berry, John Mellencamp, and ABBA. That's a total of eight artists. Great judgement, Johnny.

1. Entitlement Mentality.
Repukes are classic projectionists. They accuse others of their own worst flaws - such as the "entitlement mentality." They love to frown upon someone spending a food stamp, but their own goal is to get their grabby little paws on anything and everything they can.

And who cares about "artists" anyway?

3. I heart Heart
The GOP believes they are the masters of time and space - this includes violating copyrighted material.

I loath them and thus just gives me another reason to do so.

4. I think it's a big FU to rules, and laws, and everyone. McCain's party is saying 'we'll do what we
want and to hell with you." Just like when it Bush's party. The only rule they care about is what comes through power. I don't know if this will sink in to the Hockey Mom For VP! crowd, but the rest of us are getting the signal loud and clear.

8. Well WMG sent an official cease-and-desist order in regards to a YouTube video
McCain sent out with Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Of course, if they catch a college kid dumb enough to be using Kazaa, that's ten thousand bucks...

7. The pissed-off artist contingent alone would make a great fundraising concert.
And what a dandy "F**K YOU" to McCain it would be.

10. And they played Earth Wind and Fire!
Didn't the band come and perform at our convention? How can they play the same exact tune we played and not feel like phonies?
I can't believe Earth Wind and Fire would let them use their music.
