It's pretty clear after the GOP Convention what their intentions are.
Once again, they will campaign as the Party of Resentment. Attacking Liberals, the Democrat Party, the "Eastern Elite," the Media and more subtly "Anyone who is Not Just Like Us." That means that Gays are responsible for the problems of families. Celebrities have caused the decline in morality. Blacks and Immigrants are stealing your jobs or staling your taxes for welfare. The US is in decline because of Godless Atheists, Jews and Muslims and Hippies ...And, of course, Terrorists are obsessed with harming you and your family just for the hell of it.
Obama has chosen to take a higher road than the GOP. Rather than engage in the Politics of Resentment, he is staying true to what he declared at the 2004 Democratic Convention, about the need to heal divisions, to avoid demonization, to downplay ideological labels, etc.
Now, IMO, there's plenty to be resentful about. But the rel culprits are the True Elites who run corporate America, and the CONservatives who go along with them.
My question is whether Obama and the Democrats should more aggressively attack the GOP, but from the perspective of the ideology of the left?
Or, is Obama smart by emphasizing Unity and Civility?
