Are we Democrats "in disarray" over Palin's addition to...
...the Republican ticket? That's what they are now saying (Bob Franken on MSNBC). I say we prove them wrong!

I'm not going to fall for the Palin Distraction. It's not going to work. I don't care about the soap opera she creates to help Republicans distract Americans from discussing issues. I have NO NEED to get involved in her family stuff...that's personal.

Let's talk economy. Let's talk climate change. Let's talk foreign policy, Iraq and accountability.Let's talk about how to turn this country around and get us back on the right track.

It's Obama/Biden that can do that...not McCain/Palin. Let's talk about the difference.:patriot:

Seems to me we are even more disciplined than I dreamed. DU and the blogs are vetting while Obama and Biden hit back with one liners but staying on the issues.

Is this their distraction from the 6.1% unemployment rate?

36. In a way, I think, yes.
Speaking specifically to Palin, there are two clear and easily identifiable paths by which one can approach that candidate. She appears to have a sordid and easily revealed personal life, and despite Obama's request that we all back off of it, it's still garnering a lot of attention. She also appears to be a lawbreaker, power abuser, and secessionist, all of which speak more directly to her inability to do the job suggested by her nomination. While that's the path most of us here want to take, we all know that the public at large can't even spell secession and doesn't know what it means.

As far as the "change" bullshit coming out of the Republican Party, that's easily described. The "change" Republicans want is a changing of the guard--the prison guard, that is. The Democrats want to burn the goddamned Bastille.

One needs only look at McCain's 100% voting record in favor of Bush's legislative agenda this year to deduce that the deal cut was that the White House would play ball with McCain only if McCain fully supported the evil path laid out by Bush's handlers. If the so-called maverick is willing to go there, there's no chance he'll actually try to change anything else.

48. Damn straight.
I think there are two things that are keeping this up in the air: first, the Republicans have been attempting to focus attention on the running mate, and their slapdash method of selection is preventing them from getting ahead of the revelations; second, the GOP is running damned light on debatable issues.

Today CNN briefly showed purportedly live broadcasts of both McCain and Obama speaking. Neither could have been more than ninety seconds long. McCain was first, barking about how the Republicans (of all people) would bring "change" to Washington.

After the break, CNN cut in on Obama, catching him in the middle of a sentence where he was explaining how America was dropping behind in engineering, and how we require more and better math and science teachers, and how we'll have to pay those teachers more money in order to draw them out of the market....

I guess that's what prompted me to write some of that stuff above. One guy is throwing the word around. The other guy is planning to actually do it.

65. I think people are far too eager to stop talking about her. But I think that's wrong..
When in fact it's personality and character that motivates the average voter. The talk of her character is important, though it may seem like salicious gossip to most. These stories that we've been hashing out online paint a picture of who she really is -- and in the end, that is what will make a difference to many voters. So many voters will choose someone that does not share their beliefs on various issues IF they have a 'good feeling' about that person. We're painting a picture of her character, and it happens every election. It's normal.

Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 12:22 PM by YvonneCa
...is another. The facts of her life should be exposed by the media. I am sure that will happen. But the soap-opera effect distracts us (just like the Schiavo story, Britney Spears, etc.) from a discussion of our future...and I believe that in that discussion Obama WINS.

70. Possibly.
I just had a related conversation on the phone with my mom, 20 minutes ago.

She emailed me about Palin last week, and brought her up on the phone conversation. I heard some of the same stuff I can find on DU, if I look, although she's not a DUer. Random comments from my mom this morning:

"If it were a Democratic woman who <insert various Palin offenses here>, what would the media, and the Republicans, be saying and doing?"

My response: "You mean the same Republicans who think semen on a blue dress is reason to impeach, while Democrats don't think war crimes are serious enough offenses for impeachment?"

Mom: "The Republicans have thrown us for a loop, and it may work. If they win in November, I'm leaving the country."

It sounded like disarray to me. Now is yet another time that the non-existent spine is needed.

I agree with your point. I'd rather see mostly posts about what the Obama campaign is doing. I'd rather see any posts about Palin be:

1. In GDP.

2. Focused on how to exploit her many flaws to our advantage.

And finally, I wish all the election posts would be limited to GDP, so that if I want to talk about something else, I don't have to wade through pages and pages of stuff about mccain and palin to find it in GD.

71. Thank you for the very thoughtful post. I am sure you are right...
...about what's out there among Democrats. I also agree with this: "Now is yet another time that the non-existent spine is needed."

My basic point is that the media (Bob Franken and MSNBC are but one example) is using this to diminish ALL Democrats, like they did in 2004. And it worked in favor of Republicans. I don't want to see a repeat of that in 2008.

I think we Democrats win on the issues...so let's stay on the issues, and not be distracted.

78. It's just Rovian "truth opposite assertion".
The GOP is in disarray over it.

79. LOL!
Of course not. We are lean, mean and ready to rumble. They have gotten almost everything about this election wrong, don't expect them to start making sense all of a sudden.

80. Disarray? pffft...
I admit that sometimes Palin is like watching a train wreck its terrible but I can't look away.
But believe me, I sure getting sick of her. She is a very disturbing individual and there's only so much one can take. Soon we'll all be tired of discussing her, and all the Republicans will have to show for this stunt will be

there is nothing for us to argue about... just let her die out.

Meanwhile, we have a killer ticket. Obama and Biden have been playing it cool the whole time. Another DU'er mentioned that they don't even say the VP nominee's name. So cool! Obama/Biden are on the right side of all the issues that matter to America, as you say.

The gimmick is wearing thin already. She has no substance, people will tire of discussing her.
