Investigation into Palin Now on Fast Track - "It's likely to be damaging.." (ABC News)
Investigation into Palin Now on Fast Track
Sources Tell ABC News that Report Will Be Released Almost Three Weeks Early
By LEN TEPPER

September 5, 2008—

ABC News has exclusively learned that Alaska Senator Hollis French will announce today that he is moving up the release date of his investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her office to get the Alaska public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, fired. The results of the investigation were originally scheduled for release Oct. 31 but will now come almost three weeks earlier, according to sources.

The announcement is set for 9 a.m. AKDT time.

The Alaska state senator running an investigation of Gov. Palin had accused the McCain campaign of using stall tactics to prevent him from releasing his final report by Oct. 31, four days before the November election.

"It's likely to be damaging to the Governor's administration," said Senator Hollis French, a Democrat, appointed the project manager for a bi-partisan State Senate Legislative Counsel Committee investigation.

Palin, who has denied any wrongdoing and has said she has nothing to hide, has hired private lawyers to represent her in the matter.

25. Me too. What do the good Republicans always say? Oh, yeah, if you have nothing to hide ,
there's nothing to worry about.

They're all for wiretapping and imposing into other people's business, until it happens to involve one their own.

22. I keep hearing about an 80% approval rating in Alaska but
apparently more Alaskans than that believe she is lying about Troopergate.

Strange stats to us mainlanders.

10. Wake up people... they put it on the fast track to get it out of the way...
They want it to be out of everyone's minds by the Election... Remember that they moved the rezko Sentencing to the end of October to have another news cycle to rub Obama's face in it... I wish this hadn't gotten moved forward... unless she gets jailtime.

16. I had some concern about the Oct. 31 date
because that is Halloween (big adult party night) and the Friday before the election. The story would have to compete against general election coverage, polls, prognostications, etc., and would be too close to the election to change minds. I.e., by then, I think most people would have decided what they plan to do. However if you give the story a little time to stew and get analyzed (and this assumes that the damn TV media actually does their jobs), then minds might be able to be changed (otherwise, the later date would appear like an obvious political hit job and that might cause people to solidify their positions even more).

The Rezco thing is a "guilt by association" nonsensical construct which should also be drowned out by the prognostictors over that weekend. And as it is, Obama is in no way involved in whatever Rezco did with the Gov. of Illinois nor is he under investigation unlike Palin. And if they try to insinuate such, then Keating 5 & Abramoff should be put right back on the table, front and center along with Palin's lovey dovey political relationship with the indicted Ted Stevens.

A Repug specialty, no? Just because it's nonsensical doesn't mean they won't try to make it fly and some idiots won't buy it.

20. Palin is Palin. Rezko is not Obama.
I know the GOP desperately wants Rezko to blow up into something, but the fact is there's nothing there. Obama bought 1/6 the land for 1/6 the price Rezko paid for it. It wasn't even a good deal for Obama.

...because the guy leading the investigation has long been known as one of Palin's opponents. Doubtful he'd be willing to give her a free pass, and make himself look stupid and ineffective in the process.

37. Hmmm... ok...
It just seemed like an obvious ploy to move the investigation results to have the smallest possible effect on the election. Really, why not wait until the week before the Election... Leave them no time to regroup?

24. Following Huffington
I think I am with Arianna Huffington on Sarah.

I mean Troopergate is spicy and all, and might draw in a viewer or two. But we really want to keep our focus on McCain/Obama and even above that (since both candidates said it's not about me) the ISSUES THAT MATTER TO US.

I wish Campbell would do an election special on issues.

29. I'd say Troopergate is the ONE Palin issue that shouldn't be ignored...
...because, while the rest of it is just tabloid material, this scandal is a serious matter of malfeasance and abuse of power that points to a high level of corruption.

Alberto Gonzales is now a national pariah for pulling the same sort of abuse. It can only help our ticket if swing voters come to see Palin in the same light.

as nothing more than a partisan Democratic hack, starting like NOW. But since he hasn't been so far my guess is that the fix is in for a quick, complete exoneration to get this out of the way for her.

35. he shouldn't have said that. newest development is that there is push to
replace French because he's no longer "impartial"

http://mudflats.wordpress.com/

Also, Republican Rep. John Coghill is now asking for Hollis French to step down from his leadership role stating that because he’s used the word ‘impeachment’ more than once, and has stated he feels the whole thing will be ‘damaging’ for her, he is no longer impartial.

36. I'm assuming that everyone on
this board has lived in America for at least the past 8 years? If haven't we realized that Americans don't care about the "real issues" like the economy, health care, the environment, education, etc. The Rethugs issues for these past 8 years have been the war on terror (which is a bunch of smoke screens), and the culture wars on saving America's great Christian values. So we all are living in a alternate universe if we think staying above board and focusing on the meaningful issues will get us the Presidency.
