Shoot me now...... Krauthammer is starting to make sense to me

Can Palin's Star Power Overcome Resume?
By Charles Krauthammer

"There are two questions we will never have to ask ourselves, 'Who is this man?' and 'Can we trust this man with the presidency?'"

-- Fred Thompson on John McCain, Sept. 2.

WASHINGTON -- This was the most effective line of the entire Republican convention: a ringing affirmation of John McCain's authenticity and a not-so-subtle indictment of Barack Obama's insubstantiality. What's left of this line of argument, however, after John McCain picks Sarah Palin for vice president?

Palin is an admirable and formidable woman. She has energized the Republican base and single-handedly unified the Republican convention behind McCain. She performed spectacularly in her acceptance speech. Nonetheless, the choice of Palin remains deeply problematic.

It's clear that McCain picked her because he had decided that he needed a game-changer. But why? He'd closed the gap in the polls with Obama. True, that had more to do with Obama sagging than McCain gaining. But what's the difference? You win either way.

Obama was sagging because of missteps that reflected the fundamental weakness of his candidacy. Which suggested McCain's strategy: Make this a referendum on Obama, surely the least experienced, least qualified, least prepared presidential nominee in living memory.

1. My point from the very moment it was announced ...
McCain had VERY successfully turned the race into a mudfight, and using the kitchen sink for two months HAD whittled down BO's lead to making it almost even, and his most effective attacks were:

1) No one knows him
2) He does not have the experience
3) Not ready to be commander in chief
4) He is nothing but a celebrity

All McCain had to do was pick a safe VP, and the media WOULD have kept the meme up.

But, picking Palin not only mitigates all four of the above attacks, IT FORCES MCCAIN TO DEFEND HIS TICKET ON ALL FOUR GROUNDS.

People here are complaining that all this talk about Palin is bad news. Jesus, A WEEK AGO, all the talk was about BARACK OBAMA, and it WAS bad news!

EVERYONE knew that as long as the election was a referendum about Obama, his election was in jeopardy. NOW, all the talk about Palin takes the talk AWAY from BO and in fact ESTABLISHES HIM.

As long as the ratio of media propogading the R "hockey mom reformer" meme vs reporting the never ending stream of issues surrounding this trainwreck is anywhere in the 50/50 range, it is a SERIOUS win for BO.

IMO, I don't know if there is enough time for the Rs to bury all her problems and get her MSM pushed image across to voters.

2. I don't get it, but it's identity politics.

I was *floored* about an hour ago when my beloved right wing mother called me and exclaimed in a giddy manner, "What do you think of Sarah Palin?" <uncomfortable silence>

I softly replied, "Mom, you really don't want to know."

Mom sounded absolutely stunned and hurt, "But you fire a rifle expert and are all 'Women's Lib JUST LIKE HER!" :wow:

I retorted, "Well, we both enjoy collecting firearms but that's where the comparison ends."

But she continued in a confused voice, "But you both are independent women who love the outdoors? I thought you would like her."

My final comment: I'm sorry Mom, but she disgusts me. :(

No joke, my mother genuinely thought that I would "fall in love" with Sarah Palin as a candidate just because we both "luvs R guns."

Willful ignorance.

It's sad to see this redneck rampage of a GOP convention.

Send in the clowns.
