Lovely pic of big crowd for Obama in Lancaster, PA (blue city in a VERY red county).

Story:

http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/226821

I had a class and couldn't be there ... but I heard hordes of people were still lined up to get into the park by the time Obama started speaking (they'd been lined up for hours). This county is VERY red ... so it's very cool that Obama got this kind of reception.

10. 15,000 -- don't know whether that counts the 3-4,000 still in line
(they only expected 3-4,000 people, and had to delay Obama's speech to get more people in -- others only got to see him from the sidelines)

13. Isn't Lancaster in or near Pennsylvania Dutch and Mennonite country?

15. Yes. Lancaster County is known for its Amish, Mennonite, PA Dutch population
(and tourist traps! WILKUM TOURISTS!) And its outlet centers. Near the Amish tourist traps.

It has been super-Republican forever ... but ever since the Democratic party really got fired up in 2004, the Democratic voter registration (and volunteer organization) has been growing. Lancaster city (where this park, named for Pres. James Buchanan (who lived his post-presidency days out in Lancaster) is blue; the surrounding county is reeeeeddddd!

But Obama won the county in the Democratic primary over Hillary.

There's something in the air ....!

19. It's der mittel!
Pretty nice in-town living; my best friend from university years lives there, as did I in early childhood in the mid-1940's. Lots of expat or retired move to that area from NY, NJ, even CT...those wanting out of the rat's maze along the coa$t. Home to Franklin & Marshall, a very fine (2,000 plus students) liberal-arts college.

21. Great farms- I live in Philly
and we buy a lot of Lancaster farm foods from CSA and buying clubs. Excellent organic farmers out there.

7. The story from the afternoon paper says there was a sign "Hockey Moms for Obama"!
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 02:34 PM by gauguin57
http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/226849

"... Strolling up to a packed security entrance was 78-year-old Jack Spiese, who had been at Obama's other two Lancaster stops ... Spiese also was there when John F. Kennedy made his locally famous campaign speech in a packed Penn Square in 1960.

A Columbia resident and retired Temple University professor, Spiese was also at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 when Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech.

"Now a dream has become a hope," he mused, referring to a theme in Obama's campaign. "The man is just a straight shooter."

Later, he Spiese would lead the masses in a chant of O-B-A-M-A.

22. That picture is a real sleeper - quite amazing
I looked at it for a few and then realized I was thinking of Lincoln. It has that quality of closeness between the speaker and the audience, which I associate with Lincoln in the debates.
It's like narrative art. Anyway, 15,000, Lnacaster, PA, not to shabby.

23. Okay, two things. Obama is going to small places to show he's about big things (Lancaster pop 55k)
AND...

America is getting fatter and fatter, and that's a real problem. Look at those people closest to the camera. It's insane!

God, I should lose a few pounds myself.
