Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.
Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.
Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

The answer is to make government bigger ... take more of your money ... give you more orders from Washington ... and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world."

More than anything, this election should be about the big issues of our time--ending a disastrous war, restoring America's reputation in the world and building an economy that works for more than just the very rich. The challenge for Democrats is to frame these issues in a way that connects with traditional American and progressive values, exposes Republican callousness and extremism, and in doing so trumps the GOP's political marketing which cynically and cleverly plays on symbolism. As George Lakoff wrote, "Just arguing the realities, the issues, the hard truths should be enough in times this bad, but the political mind and its response to symbolism cannot be ignored..... Democrats, in addition, need to call an extremist an extremist: to shine a light on the shared anti-democratic ideology of McCain and Palin, the same ideology shared by Bush and Cheney. 209. I've often had that same thought
give 'em their own country. Fence off the borders so they can't get out. Then let them go to it. And I've often wondered what that country would turn into after five or ten years. Afghanistan under the Taliban? Germany under Hitler? A huge Jim Jones cult?

Whatever it was, it probably wouldn't be pretty.

I'll bet one of the first things they'd have to deal with would be what to do with unwanted infants. No birth control allowed. No abortion. They'd be overrun with babies, and I can bet that out and out infanticide would be the first order of business.

After that, things would really get nasty. Maybe they would end up destroying themselves totally...

I think it's an open secret that the Republican party is the party for and of racists. I would imagine that the people who are disgusted by this comment from Palin either would have never voted for Obama or any Democrat anyway, or will simply ignore it, because they're rich and want a government that caters to the wealthy.

I'm not normally a fan of LBJ, but he knew how to get things done in the Beltway.

We have to do whatever it takes. Our nation is already half-broken as it is. We can't take four or eight more years of Republican warmongering and theft from the commons.

We absolutely must defeat them, using every tactic available.

If our side can slime and destroy them personally and politically - as KKKarl Rove has done gleefully for his whole career - then we must do it. with her "I guess being a community organizer is kinda like being a mayor...without the responsibilities!" This from a woman who has never been to south Chicago. She actually hasn't been to very many places in our country. I loathe her for that comment about Obama. This is a man who could have walked out of the Ivy League into a $250,000 job. But, he didn't. He went into the poorer neighborhoods and worked tirelessly.
And that meant nothing to this shallow woman.

While the Republican party relies on racism to get votes, I don't actually think that people like Bush and McCain are racists (Palin, on the other hand, may be). They know that racism is an effective tool to divide the poor and keep them from acting in their own best interests. This solidifies Republican power - it's all about the power. Prominent black Republicans also know that it's all about money and power - it's not like this was the first time that a prominent Republican has made an outright racist statement. Those people who choose to stay with the party know what they're getting into when they sign up.

Follow the money. Check out the Sports Stadium project, for example. Where are the accounts and who benefits (apart from the lawyers)? Gather the evidence.

I know (or knew) next to nothing about Alaska sociopolitics. But this is certainly the way RW politicos hand-in-glove with the local construction industry operate around here in the Canary Islands. And I live here in what we call a village (pueblo) that's pretty much the same size, in population, as Wasilla (but with a hell of a lot more tourists).



As for the article as such, it's a pity so much of it (but by no means all) is taken almost verbatim from the Anne Kilkenny letter without proper attribution.

I totally understand that reality now. However, there is something else that is at work here. If you do not have a direct recording of something like that, it can STILL be seen by the public as true IF the stories start to add up. One random comment from one waitress... yeah, hard to prove -- BUT when stories like these start to appear from various sources in paints a picture of a person. Remember when, was it?, Al Hunt of WSJ was accosted by Dubya at a restaurant and called filthy names? Then when the man at the only parade Bush ever did was told "Who cares what YOU think?", and there was this pattern of stories about his CHARACTER that were not taped, but they piled up.

These stories need to be told because, together, they paint a picture of a mean, racist, and vindictive, person. One that may actually be NASTIER than McCain AND Cheney!!!

So I say let's start collecting these stories with an open mind, because the voters are getting a picture of who Caribou Barbie really is. The GOP ticket is absolutely: Mean/Meaner '08

97. My mother had an old copy of 'Little Black Sambo' and I've read the book - very racist kids book.
Mind you, this was just one of many children's books she had as a child and while cleaning out her parents house she found the copy of it (although as a small child I remember reading it at my grandparents house). Mind you, neither my parents or grandparents are even the slightest bit racist. My mom seems to recall someone gave her the book and it was just tossed in with the collection of other books. Eventually the book ended up in the attic stored away with other books.

But if you ever have a chance to read the book (and I have) the book is pretty damn racist with "Sambo" definately being used as a derogatory for blacks

The British called Indians (India Indians) "niggers" and "blacks." I am not sure whether the word "nigger" originated in the British colonial corps in India... I suspect it may have.

American southerners redid the Sambo story with an African-American kid, using the standard cartoon stereotype features.

I ate many meals as a child in the Sambo's chain of restaurants, which were like Denny's (And may have turned into Denny's for all I know)

Sambo's tried to survive the civil rights era by changing all their decorations to the original indian motif; their late 1960s Sambo was light brown with a turban and pointy shoes.

Didn't work. They seem to have eventually all disappeared anyway. ON EDIT: The post right above this suggests at least one Sambo's exists.

When I was a child, I had a copy of this book and loved it. I thought Sambo was a very smart boy for outwitting those nasty tigers the way he did.

I can't remember if the child in my copy of the book was Indian or African, but it didn't matter. I just thought he was very brave and clever.

I do see how calling a grown man "Sambo" because he's black is belittling and racist, just as calling an Arabic-looking man "Abdul" rather than his real name would be (and I've heard that done).

However, I just don't understand how the original children's story was racist.

The child in the story had to be Indian or African, since that's where the story was set because that's where tigers live, and he was portrayed in a very positive light.

So what am I missing? :shrug:

But the name became a slur at some point, not because of anything Sambo did, but only because the title was "Little Black Sambo"

And the caricature "mush-mouf" sort of drawing became associated with the name Sambo.

Sambo himself was just fine.

An unnamed person told Rothschild that InfraGard members would have some kind of special enforcement powers during a state of emergency. That is complete bullshit, but Rothschild published it anyway without making any effort to verify it. He got snookered, and the story went viral.

There have been many organizations devoted to stopping it. There have been countless attacks on Native Alaskans that have resulted in little or no jail time for the non-native attackers. There was a horrid incident with some DJs who made disgusting comments about Native Alaskan women. Another case that was controversial, a group of non-Native teens attacked Native teens with frozen paintballs (which are pretty lethal), and when one of the victims got away and flagged down a police car, the cop arrested him and charged him with being disorderly and threw him in jail for 10 days. Also a horrific case that only resulted in a "tampering with evidence" charge, after a young non-Native man was found to be having sex with a native Alaskan female's corpse (but he was not charged in her death!)

My point is that it IS entirely believable that this is happening, and that Palin is guilty of being racist. Considering there is a man in the news story that freely gives his full name and calls her out for being racist and bigotted, tells me that this is not a rumor. In fact, some other people are indignant because they say that we're spreading a rumor. I don't think a published article in a newspaper, with several quotes about direct knowledge, makes this a "rumor." Now, if someone posted here that their "sister said that she heard that...", that would be spreading rumors.

Reacting to a piece in the media is called... reacting to a piece in the media. Big diff.

So I am not a fan of Palin at all so I don't want to sound like I'm defending her but this doesn't ring that true to me. I was born and raised in Anchorage, AK but have lived in Chicago for several years now. And I just don't think this sounds like something an Alaskan would say.. not that it couldn't be true but Alaskans don't usually refer to people as eskimos. They would call them a native. As in Native Alaskan, its not a slur to call someone a native, it would just depend on the context and way someone says native. So if she was overheard saying “f**king Native’s" then I would believe this story more. Some of the other stuff she supposedly said may be true, you can never be sure but just doesn't sound right to me...

I just knew they were white supremacists. I had read that she was a former member of The Alaskan Independent Party who advocated succession from the union. When I read up on AIP I started finding articles about them meeting with supremacists groups in the south and that one of their goals is to help give these organizations legitimacy. Then I either read or saw a video, had to be video- telling their own people that they had to infiltrate party's in order to gain power. I posted this thread...



After the speech last night I was once again listening to the talking heads. Rachael and the Tweet'ster were talking. So this morning I get up and I'm reading the Newsweek story about how White Supremacists are hoping that electing Obama will bring forth the hate.http://www.newsweek.com/id/151418/page/1

So I decide to find what I can on connection to the Alaska Independent Party AIP (which Sarah was a member of) and their links to white supremists.
here's just a tidbit:

As I am sure every knows by know, the AIP's main goal is for Alaska to secede from the U.S.A. and become its own country. To achieve this goal the Alaska Independence Party finds itself in some fairly shady company; company such as the Neo-Confederate, White Supremacist "League of the South", whose founder, J Michael Hill, according to a Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Report, once said,

I say this as someone who is from Alaska... Most people say Native Alaskan or just native. There are so may different indigenous Native cultures in Alaska that you don't know who is Inuit (eskimo), Aleut, Athabascan, or any number of others. It would be like calling someone chinese when you don't know if they are chinese, japanese, or korean. You would call someone Asian. That's why you call people Native Alaskan -You just don't lump everyone together and say eskimo. I never hear people say eskimo unless they are really actually eskimo and then they usually would say Inuit or Yupik... just sayin... atleast this has been my experience as an Alaskan.

268. I find this completely believable. As someone who lived in Alaska for 6 years, I will attest that
racism is rampant. I'd never before lived in a place so full of nasty, foul-mouthed rednecks, it was an absolute shock to me, coming as I did from ("nice") Minnesota.

I understand all the posters who are saying if it's not on tape, it didn't happen -- however, I think we should all spread this story far and wide. Because you never know who else might be out there who could decide to come forward to confirm it, or come forward with something similar for which there IS recorded or documented evidence.

I would like to believe it. There is a lot that I would like to believe about that woman. However, there are things that are factual and proven Church leaning Dominionism, her husband associated with seccesionism, pregnant daughter. Not that this is an interpretation; the quote's pretty clear. It's just that there's no evidence that it was actually ever said.

There has been a post on the author's background, and he has published in a few places (not really hard to do). But it's not a stunning resume of investigative journalism. And the web site/publication? "Dick and Sharon's L.A. Progressive"? Not exactly a "name".

IMHO, they wanted to publish a valid, hard-hitting piece on Palin's record (and that part was good), but wanted a "hook" to give it a higher profile. They added the quote, which doesn't even seem to be the thrust of the story, to draw people in. I think they made it up.

Not that it's unlikely mind you (that she uses such words habitually).

If they want to play that game, so be it. They (and many here) might consider it fair play given the smears on Obama based on no real evidence. I wouldn't get too sucked in though.

342. "Published" in the sense that I just published this post.
I used to publish an e-zine too (and back in the pre-historic mid-90's). It's not that hard.

If she routinely spouted language like that publicly (sure, I think she may privately), for one, the long-time resident of Wasilla in the thread just below this one on the main DU page would probably have mentioned it in their lengthy (and critical) description of her career.

The source is the guy's blog. Yes, he has been a freelance writer. That applies to me as well, and many many other non-professional writers. It's from a blog.

It pretty clearly describes him as one. I simply compared him "to me and other non-professional writers". I never said HE wasn't professional.

The people I said were not professionals were the editor and publisher of the piece, as you said they were. By their own admission, "Dick and Sharon" are not professional editors and publishers, as they "have day jobs".

Judging by the other pubs and his bio, my guess is his highest profile publication in Esquire was a review of a restaurant or something of similar nature. Okay, perhaps an essay (he says he's written many). "Former assistant editor" of Business Week? Published in some in flight journals and "St. Louis Magazine"? You are pretty easily impressed. I'd think that the fact that the hook of his story is unsubstantiated hearsay would somewhat dampen your impression. I don't care if Edward R. Murrow himself published this quote, it would still be unsubstantiated hearsay.

BTW, that bio you posted was from his... what's that word? Oh yeah... BLOG. It's a blog post; that's all this is (like much of what you read here on DU). And a non-professional news e-zine picked it up. If he had a tape of the quote, everyone would have picked it up. It registers a 0.5 out of 10 on newsworthiness.

If anyone even close to a reputable news source or the Obama campaign pushes this, it is going to play right into their hands and hurt Obama (unless their is a tape or some other verification).

The story will not be credible to the TV-addicted public unless there is some proof more substantial than a story related by an anonymous person to a journalist that most people have never heard of.

I would not be at all surprised if the incident happened exactly as described, but without verifiable proof it's just gossip.

I'm not sure about the objectivity of the source, but I could see her saying something like that. I sent this out to a few people who are on the fence, and that is what I heard back- "not sure I believe it 100%, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true". Part of it is she seems to derive too much enjoyment from attacking Obama. In the 21st century, we really have to have zero tolerance for people of that kind of ilk.

Besides, with the growing list of reasons why this woman, if vetted, would never have been chosen as McCain's mate, she'd do better to shut her ugly-@$$ mouth about insulting anyone.

The last rumor I heard was that she had sex with her husband's former best friend and apparently this man is now asking the court to seal his record, so there must be something in there, perhaps testimony regarding why he ended up divorced. I'm sure the media wants to get its hands on it, but I'm guessing his palms have been greased by the McCain campaign.

Racism is everywhere and yes, is common in AK in places. "Arctic Arabs" yet her husband is now claiming that heritage?
According to Kilkenny and others in Wasilla as well as Juneau, Palin reduced progressive property taxes for businesses while mayor and increased a regressive sales tax which even hits necessities such as food. The tax cuts she promoted in her St. Paul speech actually benefited large corporate property owners far more than they benefited residents. Indeed, Kilkenny insists that many Wasilla home owners actually saw their tax bill skyrocket to make up for the shortfall. Two other Wasillian’s with whom I spoke said property taxes on their modest, three bedroom homes rose during the Palin regime.

To an outsider, it would seem hard to do, but an oil-rich town with zero debt on the day she was inaugurated mayor was left saddled with $22 million of debt by the time she moved away to become governor – especially since nothing was spent on things such as improving the city’s infrastructure or building a much-needed sewage treatment plant. So what did Mayor Palin spend the taxpayer’s money on, if not fixing streets and scrubbing sewage?

For starters, she remodelled her office. Several times over, as a matter of fact. Then Palin spent $1 million on an unnecessary, new park that no one other than the contractors and Palin seemed to want. Next, Sarah doled out more than $15 million of taxpayer money for a sports complex that she shoved through even though the city did not own clear title to the land; now, seven years later, the matter is still in litigation and lawyer fees are said to be close to at least half of the original estimated price of the facility.

She also worked hard to get voters approval of a $5.5 million bond proposal for roads that could have been built without borrowing. Anchorage may not be the center of the financial universe but, like good Republicans everywhere, Sarah Palin knows how to please Alaskan bankers and bond dealers. For good measure, she turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots.

If verified these allegations will destroy the McCain/Palin ticket. This article MUST be passed on to the mainstream media.

If the allegations are true it will probably be possible for the mainstream media to identify sources who WILL speak on the record. If Wasilla is swamped with reporters from the national news outlets the truth will out. However, for this to happen the mainstream media have to take the story seriously - the more of us who contact them the more likely they are to do this.

Unless the major media outlets can back up the story with verifiable sources it will stay as internet gossip.
