Have you ever heard this about Hispanics and Reagan?

I was talking to the plumber this morning.

He was admiring my Obama button attached to my purse.

He was 100% for Obama!

I encouraged him to get all of his friends and relatives to vote for OBAMA too.

Then he said, " It's so sad."

"Some of my people want to vote for the Republicans because Ron Reagan was so good to them when they first came to this country."

According to him, many older Hispanics, and now their children, believe that Reagan was like God.

20. Try understanding an African American Republican _~ I am

African American and I just don't get it.

I know a couple of friends that have families that have always been Republican.

I think there was some thought that Republicans would give you more opportunities to be Black and rich.

They look mighty stupid now trying to defend McCain against Obama.

Edit to add: Many African Americans thought that they should be Republicans because "Lincoln freed the slaves."

I'm still not sure why so many people liked Reagan. He was nothing but problems for me and my family growing up in Detroit in the 1980's

13. Reagan was a real problem here in California

Most caring people won't forget/forgive him for releasing a segment of Mentally ill patients and putting them on the streets.

There was a photo in the LA Times during that period when a mental patient was sitting on a fence and howling. It was awful.

It is ironic that Reagan had Memory problems during his later years.

12. It should be at least 90%, based on the faces that
I saw at the Rethug Convention, they were not there in abundance.

Hope more Hispanics will wake up and realize that the Republicans are the enemy.

17. Right after women do.
Why anyone without a fortune as big as Cindy McCain's would even consider voting Republican, from a pure self interest standpoint, is beyond me.

4. I remember him rounding them up and shipping them back to Mexico in the early 80s until
his corporate contributers pointed out that illegal aliens are good for corporations and bad for workers. So in the mid 80s he granted amnesty to those who could prove they had been here a while.

5. The first amnesty occurred under the Reagan administration.
It helped a lot of families who were always in fear of "La Migra" to come out of the shadows and make a life for themselves, even a lot of non-hispanic undocumented aliens. They didn't realize that it was a cynical ploy to keep cheap labor here for the rich and the business community. I think in a way it made it much easier for Reagan to bust unions. That's my opinion anyway. Maybe others might have a different take on it.

14. I remember the 50's and 60's in CA

We would hear about people they called "Wet Backs" that were crossing into California and would ultimately get here by hanging under cars/in the trunks to cross the boarder.

Many did make it that way.

I'm sure that Reagan and the other leaders wanted the cheap labor and looked the other way at the boarder.

19. It's not that simple.
In the fifties there was a bracero program where Mexicans could enter the country and work here legally in the agricultural industry as long as they went home when they were no longer needed. Of course, they were exploited as cheap labor and the bracero program was revoked for that reason, but the system remained except now the immigrants were branded illegals. I understand that the term wet back comes from Mexican nationals who would swim across the Rio Grande to get here. In the middle 1980's, I don't remember the year, those people were granted amnesty and according to Reagan then no one else would be allowed in, but the cheap labor now found out that they had rights, so illegals are still used for cheap labor and to bust unions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Reform_and_Control_Act_of_1986

The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), also Simpson-Mazzoli Act (Pub.L. 99-603, 100 Stat. 3359, signed by President Ronald Reagan on November 6, 1986) is an Act of Congress which reformed United States immigration law. The Act made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit illegal immigrants (immigrants who do not possess lawful work authorization), required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status, and granted amnesty to certain illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously. The Act also granted amnesty to several million illegal aliens, and its proponents promised the American public that that would be the last amnesty granted.
