Geraldine Ferraro speaks up about Palin. (UK Times) Unbelievable.
Oh wow.

Sarah Palin is ...."liberated without preaching women’s liberation".......... "cutting across some of the entrenched positions in America’s culture wars." ???

From The Times
September 5, 2008

Geraldine Ferraro accuses media of 'sexist' scrutiny of Sarah Palin.
Geraldine Feraro, the first woman to be nominated for vice-president by major political party, sympathises with Sarah Palin

Tom Baldwin in St Paul

(.....)

In Britain, Ms Ferraro said, there are any number of strong female role models, such as the Queen and Margaret Thatcher. “But here in America, in 200-odd years we’ve only seen white male Presidents and white male vice-presidents. This election will change that, whoever wins.” She became a lightning rod for the cultural flashpoints of gender and race when she was forced to quit Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign this year after saying that Mr Obama would not have got so far if he was white or a woman.

Ms Ferraro remains angry at the “sexist treatment” of Mrs Clinton by the media. “In New Hampshire, someone put up a sign saying ‘Iron My Shirt’. Nobody spoke out. Imagine if Hillary’s supporters had said ‘Shine my shoes’. Everybody would quite rightly have been jumping on it. Women in politics should not be treated better than men, just fairly.”

So would Mrs Palin be facing questions about her newborn baby or how she deals with her pregnant teenage daughter if she was a man? “Definitely not,” replied Ms Ferraro. “Most men get round it by giving that parenting job to their wives.” She also said that the Republican vice-presidential nominee – as an antiabortion conservative, liberated without preaching women’s liberation – was cutting across some of the entrenched positions in America’s culture wars.

Issues such as how a largely liberal media dealt with a Republican woman were, said Ms Ferraro, among those that needed to be studied properly once the election was over.

Palin is willing to destroy the path to equality for all women - for her own political gain. By denying that fact Ferraro is giving Palin a pass because she's a female. This is the very definition of sexism.

23. So Obama is responsible for some lone supporter with sign?
I call bullshit. The racism in this election has been much uglier than any sexism. Clinton hasn't been called affirmative action or a Muslim. IMO, the racist legacy and discrimination has been much worse. White women weren't hunted lime animals from their villages, shipped across the world, and sold like cattle. White women weren't lynched for looking at a person of different color. I'm sorry, but if you are comparing histories, then blacks probably deserve this more.

As a white male, I'm an asshole and a privileged class from birth, so feel free to flame away.

26. "liberated without preaching women’s liberation"
It's more like "liberated without supporting one iota of women's liberation".

So it seems to me that Ferraro is only saying kind things about Palin because she's a woman. Ferraro has become a major sexist. Palin may be a female, she may consider herself liberated, but she supports none of the agenda that women have fought for so hard to achieve. Apparently, you only need to have a vagina to get Ferraro's support, even if your ideas are from the middle ages.

Most of the sexism came from the Right, not Obama, or any other Democrat.

And those two losers with the "Iron My Shirt" stunt in New Hampshire were egged on by a DJ. They had no connection to any campaign.

All but a few of the Hillary supporters have since grown up and moved on. Ferraro would do well to ask herself what is more important: her hurt feelings from the primary campaign, or whether or not all women will have the right to choose in the future.

The U.S. Supreme Court is at stake and, depending on who makes the nominations for the upcoming empty slots, it will affect the nation for many years. The basic interpretation of our Constitution is at stake, including the zone of privacy concept by which Roe v. Wade was determined.

Ferraro apparently doesn't see that this is not just about Obama and that much more is at stake than immediately meets the eye.

Ms Ferraro remains angry at the “sexist treatment” of Mrs Clinton by the media. “In New Hampshire, someone put up a sign saying ‘Iron My Shirt’. Nobody spoke out. Are you telling me that you honestly believe that there have been no racist remarks made about Obama, that have gone unchecked during this election? Because that's the way her statement would be true.

She's right that "Iron My shirt" is sexist (though she doesn't seem to recognize, or aknowledge, that it was a publicity stunt and not an Obama supporter). But the statement she made, as a whole, is wrong, because Obama has faced racist attacks that have gone unchecked, as well.

76. Yes she is. (& you need to check your first sentence because it says the opposite of what you mean)
1. "Iron my Shirt" was sexist. It did not cause the tumult in the media the way a poster reading "Shine my Shoes" would have at an Obama rally. She is RIGHT about that.

2. You state that the "Iron My Shirt" was a publicity stunt. Do you have proof of that?

3. I'd like some examples of racism that went unchecked, especially large events. From what I saw, the Clintons were being accused of racism for innocuous remarks. I remember when HRC pointed out that President Johnson was necessary for Civil Rights legislation to be passed, everyone accused her of racism. But what she said was absolutely true: LBJ went out and twisted arms in Congress to get the 1964 Civil Rights act to pass. While the NAACP and MLK deserve a great deal of credit, LBJ was the closer; he was in the position to get the law passed and he did. That is not racist, that's history.

Plenty of us spoke up at the time, supporters and non-supporters.

She's playing "identity politics" here...for the person not the issues. Shame she's now turned into a one-issue, low information voter.

65. What part of this is surprising? Once she said was lucky in America to be a black man
you knew she was unglued. I figured she'd say any and everything she wanted that was offensive because media people are still scrambling to hear what her opinion was.

She already told me everything I needed to know in the primary.

Who knew outliers like Libermann and Ferraro would bring Democrats together?

Before the primary, Republicans said Hillary could bring Republicans together. Now McCain has given us more of the far right wing of his party to make us forget why we were arguing in the first place. All we know is they do not deserve chief dog catcher much like the mantle for world domination.

90. I'm super-pissed at Ferraro, but I haven't been able to corroborate the story at your link.
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 07:55 PM by intheflow
The site the story is posted on is not authoritative, it's a volunteer-run site not affiliated with the MTA. I've been searching the NY Times archives from 1976-1979, the time the person at your link said Ferraro was marching to stop the Montauk line from stopping in Queens. In fact, there are no articles at all when I searched under "Ferraro AND subway," "Ferraro AND Queens," "Ferraro AND LIRR." Neither could I find any reports on possible subway expansions through Queens. It strikes me as very strange that the NYT wouldn't report on subway expansion plans, neighborhood opposition to such plans (to such an extent that the plans were thwarted), or that a Democrat running for U.S. Congress was a part of subway use suppression.

If anyone has any concrete links to this story, I'd love to see 'em. Given Ferraro's recent behavior--and the fact that she won her Congressional seat in part by describing herself as "a small 'c' conservative"--I don't doubt she's racist. But spreading unsubstantiated rumors? It just doesn't help the discussion or this board.

Welcome to DU.

Edited to say: Oops! I wasn't talking to you, sfexpat! I meant to respond to the post you were responding to.

68. I Agreed With What Gerry Said During the Primaries, But She's Deluded, Here
She's still speaking through the anger of the treatment Clinton received, but a male candidate with an unwed, pregnant, teen daughter would very much be subject to scrutiny.

When Howard Dean's kid got busted for breaking into that country club and swiping booze, the media was all over it.

Although I have a suspicion as to whether Hillary/Bill approve her and Harold Wolfson's messages (he
told Politico the other day that the attacks on Palin ARE sexist. WTF??

Ferraro, Lieberman, and to a much lesser extent Edwards (as he's not a traitorous asshat towards party ideals) have all blown up in our face this year.

86. I think at this point Ferraro has overtly shown herself to be Republican not sure why she ever ->
joined our party. Ferraro is very comfortable with setting womens rights back so that defines her really right there. Especailly after Hillary's finestspeech of her whole career to support our party to the next century.

87. I don't get it - what was wrong with what she said?
Palin is "liberated" if you consider that she chooses to both work and have a family - in some ways more liberated than many women on this site who condemn/judge a woman for working while raising a family.
