Just Kill Me... Alaska kept all the bridge-to-nowhere money!
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 09:56 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
CNN pointing out (on AC360) that they kept the money, they just didn't build the bridge! They used the money on other stuff. So no benefit whatsoever to federal taxpayers.

"I told the federal government if Alaska needs a bridge we will build it ourselves." Then she keeps the money! It's as if your kid showed their "self reliance" by taking tuition money from you but then spending it on a car instead.

Funny that the pugs couldn't come up with one single true thing for her campaign image resume.

_________

WASHINGTON POST Link from DUer Prefer:

"Palin's decision resulted in no savings for the federal government. The bridge money is being spent on other highway projects in Alaska."

21. maybe you guys can come here and see the shit you have and
take for granted that we don't have, like flush toilets in the bush and roads that go to every town in your state. We are only fifty years old and our infrastructure is small. If they built roads, GOOD FOR THEM!

22. But don't condemn pork while you are eating the whole damn pig
If Alaska needs roads and infrastructure help from the federal government, then fine. But for Palin to claim she's against pork while taking money is insane. As Obama would say, "How dumb do they think we are?"

as much as you hate her, imagine having to live with her. the problem with this earmark was that it was already granted and couldn't go back. they had to keep it. So they used it wisely. Don't dump on us. We are doing the best we can. if the money could have gone back, we would have sent it. I cannot TELL YOU how much the people here hated this earmark.

don't dump on us.

11. Damn right. Get the scam bridge money, spend it on pothole repair, balance state budget.
Long story short, the bridge to nowhere money was ultimately distributed to Alaskans as CASH PAYMENTS!

(The oil revenue payments went up $1200. If needed to balance the state budget the payments would have been less. So all federal money is part of the overall equation leading up to the oil revenue checks.)

Once you realize her boast is merely, "Thanks but no thanks. We'll spend your money however we feel like," it becomes unbearable to hear.

19. Sarah Palin should be running for VP of Blackwater instead,
She totally screwed us out of our tax dollars.

The bridge was bad enough - but the fact that she didn't even use the money for what it was earmarked for.... Americans should be outraged.

She is slime...or maybe in her case, she is yellow snow.

31. You underestimate what a liar Palin is!
The earmark for the bridge to nowhere ceased to exist a year before Palin took office. Congress had got so much heat for that earmark that they eliminated it in November of 2005. The federal funds that had been earmarked for the bridge were granted to Alaska for whatever transportation projects Alaska wanted to use them for. So Palin's claim to have stood up to Congress and said no thanks to the bridge to nowhere is ridiculous. She just took transportation funds no longer earmarked for the bridge to nowhere and spent them. Worse still, her stated rationale for not pursuing the bridge to nowhere is that Congress was not willing to provide funds for the bridge. So it's more accurate to say that Congress said no to her on funding the bridge to nowhere!!!

36. I'm not sure how the story will get out
but this is the right version.

She is not to be faulted for taking pork if the money was spent on useful highway projects.

She is to be faulted for resume inflation. She had nothing to do with the "Bridge to Nowhere" money.
