"God ... Is Gonna Strike Out His Hand Against, Yes, ... The United States Of America!"
"God ... Is Gonna Strike Out His Hand Against, Yes, ... The United States Of America!"

06 Sep 2008 07:35 pm

Remember a certain Jeremiah Wright's rhetorical flight of Biblical hyperbole? Petard, prepare to be hoist:

On July 20, 2008, the pastor of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s home church, Larry Kroon, delivered a sermon called “Sin Is Personal To God.” Kroon, the senior pastor of the non-denominational Wasilla Bible Church in Wasilla, Alaska, used the book of Zephanaiah as his reference point for discussing “that great day of the Lord when God will finally bring closure to human history… a day of wrath.” According to Kroon, “all things and all people” are going to bear the brunt of God’s “intense anger.” “There’s anger with God,” he proclaimed. “He takes sin personal.”

Kroon placed Zephaniah in a modern context, warning that the sinful habits of Americans would invite the wrath of God. “And if Zephaniah were here today,” Kroon bellowed, “he’d be saying, ‘Listen, is gonna deal with all the inhabitants of the earth. He is gonna strike out His hand against, yes, Wasilla; and Alaska; and the United States of America. There’s no exceptions here — there’s none. It’s all.’”

(Kroon’s sermon can be heard here; a full transcript is here.)

11. Of course not, Koon is white as is Palin
and too many Americans believe stuff like this.

The media would be too frightened of being accused of going after Sarah Palin's religion. Fine to go after Barack Obama's church but nooooo nothing will be said about St Palin's extremist Christian cleric.

3. Think Hannity will play this on a loop 24/7?
I saw him whining last night that the left is smearing poor Sarah Palin. Unbelievable.

4. Every time I read this, I want to scream.
PERSONALLY, you twit! The word is personally, not personal!

Okay, grammar issues aside, he's theologically unsound also. Didn't God promise Noah there'd be no more of that wrath-of-God-destroy-the-earth stuff? ;)

8. Yes he did
And if you read the prophesies of Revelation and Daniel it becomes clear that the second coming of Jesus is to PREVENT the earth from being destroyed
It says "should these days not be shortened no flesh would be alive on the earth"
At no other time in history has man had the power to destroy all flesh on the earth...but we do today.

14. It's been a long time since I was a Bible boy but . . .
I don't remember my Bible having a book of Zephaniah in it. Zacariah, or something similar.

I could be wrong, because DU's spell check is underlining the second and not the first.

Just what I remember.

17. Zephaniah is a 3-chapter book in the OT, between Habakkuk and Haggai.

19. I'll take your word for it.
Because my bible reading credentials are taking a thumping here as we have turned up another book (Habakkuk) that I don't recall.

At least I feel pretty comfortable with Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the Acts of the Apostles, Corinthians I, Romans, Galatians and James. Heck I can even quote parts of those! :-)

20. There are lots of very small books in the OT that get little or no attention.
In decades of attending Lutheran services, I never once heard any sermon based on any part of Zephaniah (or Habakkuk, for that matter).

Lutheran sermons are based on a Gospel lesson (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and occasionally John) and usually include an OT lesson that correlates. I have not read the Bible in its entirety, so there are number of small books by lesser-known prophets that I have never explored.
