About the Vice Presidential debate.....
The 2004 debate was sponsored of course by the Commission on Presidential Debates. Gwen Ifil was the moderator. She asked Cheney 10 questions, then 10 "different" questions went to Edwards. I suppose they'll use the same format this year, but I sure wish they'd direct each question to both candidates. Why am I so concerned about this?

2. I am not a Gwen Ifill fan
She's status quo oriented and intellectually lazy, and very much a chattering class follower. She's pretty good as far as those types go, but weak. She's a protege' of Tim Russert and Jim Lehrer but nowhere near as good as they are, she's more like a female Bob Schieffer.

6. I am with you on this and not comfortable with her. But my friend thinks otherwise.

4. Choice of moderator is important
And not to go off-topic but think about it.... Tom Brokaw is one of the presidential debate moderators. Tom "You can't criticize McCain because he's a POW" Brokaw.

Gah.

7. I was very disappointed to hear that the candidates are always
given at least an outline of the questions in advance! I heard this several times in just the last few days. I feel it would be fine to give each candidate the TOPICS that will be covered, but that should be IT!

8. Just found this (from CPD). I think I like it.
"Each of those debates will be divided into 8 ten-minute issue segments; the moderator will introduce each segment with an issue on which each candidate will comment, after which the moderator will facilitate further discussion of the issue, including direct exchange between the candidates, for the balance of that segment. Time will be reserved for closing statements by each of the candidates in each debate."

9. Then again, I'm also reading re: VP debate that "staging and answer format to be
resolved AFTER both parties VP nominees are selected."
Anybody heard if an agreement has been reached between the parties?

10. Biden can always turn the debate to his advantage
Every one of his answers could pose a question to Palin, at least implicitly, that will force her to think on her feet. For instance, if Biden answers a question about Georgia, he can say that the McCain campaign hasn't said what they would do about force fatigue or relations with the EU. The silence will be deafening.

11. Oh my God
I REALLY hope I get to attend this debate. I go to Wash U in St. Louis and I am in a student lottery to win a debate ticket. I also have an alumni friend who may be able to get tickets. Wish me luck this is definitely the hottest ticket in town!
