4. The election is close. What the OP does point out however, is that
states that were expected to go republican, are now too close to call

That is a good sign

The national polls have issues over the state polls as you state, but it is still worrisome

I suspect at the end of the month we will have a good idea who is going to win

and I believe it will be us

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/Check those four every few days. Remember, they are averages of many polls. Most important: check the dates of the individual polls.

7. How many of those state polls are after the GOP convention?
Do you know?

9. Doesn't matter.
These polls do not follow the trend of the daily tracking polls. People are putting too much stock in the daily tracking polls.

A good sign of how this election is playing out is not only the number of states that are considered toss ups (Obama has an edge in five of the nine), but also how each candidate is doing in his home state: Arizona is weak for McCain and Illinois is strong Obama.

From tomorrow on, there is no convention bounce to rely on. We'll see how McCain-Palin fares.

10. How can it not matter?
If the conventions have given both parties bumps, shouldn't polls reflect reactions to both events in each state?

11. The state polls are not on the same time schedule as the daily tracking or national polls.
Today is the last day of the convention related polls.

Beginning tomorrow, the convention will no longer be a factor, the free advertising is over. In fact, the reaction to Palin's scandals is going to be factored in over the next couple of days.

8. Obama/Biden are doing a great job talking with Americans and what concerns them most.
A DUer posted that Obama held an Agriculture Congress and that helps. All of the national grandstanding that I see means nothing; the needs of a rancher in Montana won't necessarily be the needs of a social worker in Manhattan. I think we have to embrace the state by state projections to understand that things are a lot better than MSM polls are showing.
