Stop Rationalizing The Obsession With Palin. It's Unbalanced, Distracting & Unhelpful
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 05:55 PM by cryingshame
Cue DU'ers telling me to stop "protecting Palin".

Time spent trying to EXPLAIN her lies and slurs is time not spent promoting the Issues.

Conversation in the real world= Someone asks me "What do I think about Palin". My answer is "What do I know about Palin? She's a friendly face on an extreme, rightwing agenda". From there the conversation goes back to McCain.

MCCAIN, the guy Obama is running against.

You can list all the lies and bullshit about and from Palin and the regular person's eyes will glaze over.

Rational arguments DO. NOT. WORK. in the real world.

Keep it simple and short. And back ON FOCUS.

The goal is beating McCain.

Those of us NOT distracted by Rove's shiny object can't communicate on DU anymore. It is literally impossible to hide all the repetitive threads on Palin.

Palin is a marketing gimmick. Period. That's all friends and neighbors need to know. She's a shiny bow on a package of SHIT>

2. 2004's Election was about BUSH. So far, 2008's election has been about OBAMA.
Our elections tend to sway where the heat, attention and imagination focus.

I want to get back to Obama vs. McCain/Bush.

That's how we win.

9. Agreed but I'm talking about the dominant presence.
Since more people like Obama than dislike him, it's a good thing that Obama was capturing the imagination. When it comes to negative press, of course, you want the opponent to take some hits.

But ultimately, people want to vote FOR someone, not against them. And in that regard, Obama had more people truly wanting to vote for him.

Shifting focus to McCain's VP choice is a mistake. All we're doing is feeding into a distraction that will energize some people's attention away from the two primary players. Obama vs. McCain? We win.

33. Exactly
It shifts the focus of attention to Palin instead of Obama. Right now, there's probably more threads here about Palin than the Democratic nominee & that's not a good thing. It shows that Palin has WORKED for McCain.

7. Obama may be running against McCain
But he's taking a beating from Palin. Whenever I want to know what people who don't follow politics, the majority, thinks, I ask my wife because she doesn't vote or anything like that. I asked her about Sarah Palin. Sarah is on my wife's People Magazine cover. She's on TV, not just the news shows but the celebrity shows and women's shows. All the people watching know about Sarah Palin is she's a heroic mother of a handicapped but very cute baby. The people watching know she has a pregnant teenage daughter and the media pried into her private affairs. The reaction of these women is sympathy and a desire to support Palin. Palin is the new Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

I can be accused of sexism for thinking this but there are lots of women out there who aren't concerned with the status of women or politics or anything like that.

Obama has been behind with men all along but he was well ahead with women. The latest poll shows Obama's lead cut in half.

This lady is serious business and Obama and Biden's vows that they are only going to talk about issues are a recipe for disaster.

Sarah Palin may have women flocking - to Barack Obama

Sarah Palin's appeal to working-class women may be limited
For many of these critical swing voters, economic interests trump any admiration of the Alaska governor's maternal grit, and some are repelled by her sarcastic jabs at Obama.

Here are numbers:

"McCain leads by seven points among men while Obama leads by six among women. On Tuesday, when Obama’s lead peaked, he had a fourteen point advantage among women."

10. Here we go again.
"Palin is the ultimate Rove conspiracy. To talk about her selection is to fall for KKKarl Rove's latest and best trick yet."

Palin is an issue -- her pick shows how out of touch, how cavalier, how risky old John McCain really is.

Sometimes bad judgment is bad judgment. Sometimes even Republicans can make big political mistakes.

The Palin mistake is one of those times.

Democrats and Obama supporters should exploit this mistake by as much as possible.

Or you can talk to your neighbor about the terrible balance of trade and current account deficit ... hmmm ... that will be sure to win her over to Obama, won't it?

The GOP has forgotten they have a guy on the top part of their ticket...McCain, remember him? It is our civic duty to make sure we remind Republicans everywhere, McCain is their nominee and not Sarah Palin...as much as they wished it to be. McCain is not a red-headed stepchild they can tuck away...HE HAS TOP BILLING!

22. "Who would you rather have a beer with?" worked for Bush in 2004. Today, it is...
"Who would you rather have a mooseburger with?"

When all is said and done, a large number of voters decide whom to vote for at the last minute based on totally illogical reasons. We ignore this truth to our detriment.

Palin is a distraction to protect McCain from serious vetting by the public. My understanding of the Republican strategy is that McCain will come across as the doddering old uncle and Palin is the somewhat flaky, but jazzy niece, who will make an interesting pair to inhabit the White House.

In other words, McCain-Palin will be like "family", and many people will identify with them, totally forgetting the grave peril they represent to the country and the planet. This image has to be carefully counteracted. Those who would vote for them have to be weaned away from this image.

This IS a Rovian tactic in the sense that Rove is NOT a genius, but a master MAGICIAN. The skill of the magician is to distract you with one hand while actually performing the trick with the hand that you are not paying attention to. (This is also the skill of the pickpocket.)

It's not going to shape what happens with this election, as long as the Obama campaign knows what it's doing, there is nothing to worry about. Besides, there is nothing wrong with pointing out her numerous problems, it reflects on McCain's judgment that he picked such a person.

30. Can I interject two words? Thomas Eagleton.
If Gov. Palin is forced to withdraw from consideration, because of a scandal to rock all scandals---or because McCain's corporate backers will not tolerate a loose cannon like her so close to the presidency---then McSame's campaign is toast.

She has picked sides in the energy wars going on in Alaska. That shows more balls than brains. Exxon is suing the state over decisions that one of her appointees, a former lobbyist for TransCanada, made with her approval.

Let McCain invest a lot of time and effort into Gov. Palin. She is not going to win Sen. Clinton's voters. And if she decides to withdraw from consideration "Because her family and her state need her" everyone will know the truth.

The most important thing is 1) call her the gender neutral, respectful Gov. Palin 2) focus on official corruption and policy issues, esp. abuse of power 3) paint her as ultra-conservative 4) use concrete, descriptive language when characterizing her lack of experience 4) let the MSM do as much of the work as possible. They seem eager to do it, which leads me to believe that Big Business is not happy with McCain's choice.

but i'm also getting sick of catering to the morans of this country. It seems that doing so makes us losers. These people should be smacked down, not catered to. They are a slight majority in this country and they are starting to be in charge. If they win this election that will help them seal that deal. Maybe we should have some guts and shame them for their stupidity. Rational arguments don't work in the real world? Then the real world has become unmanageable. Maybe it's time to fight them at that right rather than just catering to that.
