Obama needs to dominate some news cycles. Here are my ideas for doing so....

  1. Hold a town-hall meeting in Wasilla, Alaska. This is the ONLY location that would generate enough buzz to get it aired on all the cable news networks.

The day before, the day of, and the day after: Obama will dominate the news cycles.

Do not mention Palin by name in the town-hall. Make lots of references to "I know you folks are hurting, with the debt your town is forced to endure".

If the crowd is hostile to him, it is a win - because it shows he's brave and willing to talk to ALL Americans, and not afraid to face tough questions.

If the crowd is instead friendly (as I suppose most of them would be), it is a DOUBLE win... as it looks like Obama cares more about the people of Wasilla than their former Mayor.

Some have suggested the Joe Biden do this instead... that would be ok too... but it wouldn't generate the news-cycle-dominating coverage that an Obama visit would.

The other objection to the idea is that Alaska's electoral votes (just 3) are probably out of reach. So what? This isn't for them.... in the age of global news coverage, this would be seen by MANY people in the "lower 48".

  2. Do whatever it takes to get an endorsement from Colin Powell. I know many DU-ers here don't like him. But YOU DON'T MATTER. What matters is the 10% sliver of voters in the middle, and they DO like Colin Powell. If Colin Powell were to repudiate the GOP and publicly endorse Obama, that would be a 3 or 4 day story. He is VERY respected by independent voters.

  3. Two days before Palin is to appear with Charlie Gibson, the DNC and the Obama campaign should publicly release a list of questions that Gibson should ask Palin:

"With record oil revenues during your time as mayor of Wasilla, how did you manage to drive a town of just 6,000 people $22 million into debt?"

"Do you believe that creationism should be taught in public schools?"

"Do you believe that birth control, other than abstinence, is always wrong?"

"Name three foreign leaders you have personally met."

"Which of the founding fathers wrote the Pledge of Allegiance?" (trick question)

"What is your relationship to the Alaska Independence Party?"

"What books do you feel do not belong in public libraries, and have you ever advocated for removing them?"

    ..and so on...

Make the list a nice round number of questions, like 10. Be sure to point out that, given the nature of the questions that Gibson asked Obama during the primary debate with Hillary, that these are MORE than fair.

Make sure CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and Fox all have the list of questions. Make it a press release. Those networks, upset that they missed out on the "big interview", would be MORE than willing to spend much air time reporting on the list. Get it to the NYT, USAT, and other newspapers as well.

  4. Push the envelope with an attack ad. Make one about the Keating 5, and tie it to the Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac mess. Use ominous music and show the "perp walks" from the time of the S&L crises. Be factual, but make the ad VERY hard hitting. Keating 5 is *NOT* off-limits.

  5. In addition to the interview with O'Reilly, the remaining 3/4 of which we will see this coming week... think about taking Hannity up on his offer to "co-host" a full 3-hour show with him. You won't convert any of Hannity's minions, but that is not the point.

The raw testicular fortitude that this would show for Obama having gone on the show will be the talk of the media. "This is NOT a man that will be afraid to face down the enemy."

Hannity will go overboard in his attacks. And that is what we'd want. Independents and moderate Republicans don't LIKE Hannity, and this would push more of them into our corner.

Going into the belly of the beast, and coming out better on the other side, will RALLY people around Obama that never supported him before.

  6. Have a PUBLIC campaign event with Bill Clinton. I believe the Big Dawg is now on board enough. Have this event in a swing state. This will get wall-to-wall coverage by the news media.

  7. Have a PUBLIC campaign event with Ted Kennedy in New Hampshire (close to home for Ted, plus a swing state). Tugging at people's emotions helps more than you think.

  8. Have Joe Biden host Saturday Night Live. No... I'm not kidding. Joe's a funny guy and there are some excellent skits they could do.... have Joe "accidentally" making lots of gaffes in a mock debate with Tina Fey playing Palin.

It would be hilarious, and would totally diffuse any REAL gaffe he made in the REAL debate.

PLUS... I think Tina Fey would be able to convincingly make Palin look like the kook she is.

I wouldn't expect much cooperation from him. I like the rest of your ideas with the exception of No. 1 and No. 5. Too gimmicky.

11. Interesting..his support has been overwhelmingly for Democrats...He even gave $ to Kerry.
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 02:01 AM by BrklynLiberal
The only repuke he seems to support is McCain. Even contributed to his senatorial campaign in 04.
He must have some longstanding personal relationship with him.

His two latest contributions to McCain were during the primary. It seems he has not made a contribution toward the general election yet.

For all we know, his donations haven't been updated by newsmeat in awhile. He has donated to McCain campaigns 4 different times and to his PAC once.

At any rate, I don't see any donations to Hillary or Obama.

Mr. Michaels, the show’s executive producer, contributed $2,300 to Senator John McCain, whose daughter Meghan was an intern on the program, the filings show. Mr. Michaels gave twice as much to Senator Christopher J. Dodd.

Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 02:27 AM by bridgit
he will be put upon to come up front and joust in most dear earnest. And a hair's breath worth of hesitation, as I heard recently with an O'Reilly all cocky and laying back into *got'cha* mode, will not be made up any time soon in the middle of a skit on SNL, again, sorry; but it's very very much time to get very very much busier period and that means know your enemy cause they are standing right in front of the lot of us at nearly 50/50...and that's too close for comfort

You should try hard to somehow get someone on the Obama campaign to notice them...i notice if u send the standard email on their site they may not notice it since they gets thousands of emails so i have no clue

I do hesitate with your Hanity idea since Hanity would intentionally cut Obama off all the time and put words in his mouth and such...it would show balls to go on his show but...hmm....As for the other ideas i am 100% on board, including the SNL with Joe Biden (very clever idea)

47. Obama needs to run some "controversial" ads...
I think Obama needs to run some negative TV ads that contain some so-called "controversial" accusations: something the media will want to talk about. The ads should tag McCain as being the "McJobs" candidate or another "Greed Over People" candidate or possibly the "Golden Parachute Flyboy". These tags will stick because they are all essentially republican truisms. Everybody knows republicans favor the corporate CEOs over the little guy worker who just had his good paying job outsourced overseas. Everybody knows republicans favor taxing rich corporations and wealthy people at a lower rate than people who work for a living. Everybody knows republicans support corporate welfare and the deregulation-corruption-bailout cycle; where corporate CEOs make out like bandits while the taxpayers are stuck with the bill.

I think McCain will have a hard time countering these arguments and even if he has something to counter them, he will be off his own message for a while. I have a feeling the media would love to hear Obama himself use the term "McJobs-McCain" to describe McCain.

Thanks,
Matt

51. How about a mixture of 1 and 7
I like the idea of Obama talking to Wasillians, even though they may be hostile. It would show he is open and willing to taking questions from anyone....unlike there hometown girl.

How about sending Bill up there? Don't know if it's available, but I'd like to see the '92 and '96 results from that county.

But, please, no, don't go on Hannity. Not than I don't think Obama can't handle it, but because I think Hannity is completely devoid of any ethical standards, as opposed to O'Reilly, who I think becasue he still wants to think of himself as reasonable, is only 99% devoid.
