CBS to McCain: GOP has become 'party of white people'

CBS' Bob Schieffer asked John McCain about the number of minorities in the Republican Party.

Partial Transcript

SCHIEFFER: I want to ask you about the composition of the convention. There were 36 African-American delegates out of 2300-plus delegates there. How can you survive as a party if you become just the party of white people?

McCAIN: We can't. We can't. I saw that information the other day that by, I've forgotten, don't hold me to it, 2042 or something like that, white americans will be a minority in the population of this country. We can't. We've got to reach out. We've got to do a better job. We have to have the Hispanic as well as African-American voters. I've traveled all over this country. I've been to places where there are literally no Republican votes. I have to convince them that I'll be the president of everybody and a Republican party has a job to do. Frankly, it's a job that also spills over into other areas. You've seen the generic ballot.

SCHIEFFER: Were you kind of surprised at all that.

McCAIN: No.

SCHIEFFER: To see that statistic come up?

McCAIN: No. I was obviously disappointed but we need to prove to Americans that this is the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. We're the party of Abraham Lincoln.

As long as the GOP represents the special interests of the elite and of corporate America, as long as they reach out to narrow-minded extremist groups like evangelicals, as long as they support draining away public education funds for public school education, as long as they are infiltrated and controlled by the Moral WHITE Majority, as long as they make ignorant comments about letting the sea "take" NOLA rather than invest in a strong pump and levee system to protect those neighborhoods, as long as the GOP and McCain approve campaign messages that are subliminally racist . . .

The Republican Party is the white party because it wants to be. They are also the corporatist party.

They have to utilize retarded racist policies of the Nixon's "southern strategy" to keep the mainframe intact. The nexus here is that the programs they employ causes conflicts...much like a computer, there is a registry problem.

People gravitate to what works for them, a party that pursues corporatist and hate politics just does not resonate with the average American who strive for progress.

I did get the opportunity to see who and who wasn't signing up for what party.

Democrats: Women, Women with children, Middle-aged men, Teenagers, and different races

GOP: Old white guys, hardly anybody was there all day.

Independents: Same as the Democrats.


I pretty much assumed that was who was and wasn't voting, but I got to see it first hand today, so I know my assumption was correct.

For once, John McCain got it right. Calling the GOP the party of Abraham Lincoln was perfect.

I wonder how many people remember their history? Yes, Lincoln wanted to free the slaves. But his plan wasn't for them to be integrated into the white population. He was going to return them all to Africa.

Yes, indeed! The Repulsican Party is made up of primarily white folks. Don't forget that over half of those white folks at the convention have an annual income of over $500,000. And I will never forget Ms. Diamond Lady, the Texas delegate, proudly all decked out in her "patriotic" red, white and blue cowgirl shirt, Stetson hat and bandanna neckerchief, festooned with Texas Star earrings, necklace and pendant, and her "54%" brooch completely encrusted with hundreds of diamonds; easily a couple of years' wages for most normal wage earning Americans. These are all pretty good clues that these GOP-ers are not going to be in touch with average Americans and minorities.

More proof that he just doesn't get it. They are no longer the party of Abraham Lincoln. They are, since the 1920s, a party that has morphed from racism and fascism. Give me a break Mr. McCain. Black people and Hispanic people that do vote for you only do so because of the abortion issue or their mistaken notion of your views on immigration, another issue on which you have flip flopped. If they were voting on the basis of other issues they certainly wouldn't be backing you.

The first real assertion to the comment by McCain was that whites will be the minority in such and such a given time...Im no linguist but I could tell that he was in some way or another fearful of that fact...Does this not seem like a serious election that will truly divide this country. I dont fear the right being upset because they already are and they will in fact enjoy the prosperity that might begin to take shape under Obama. They'll never admit it but they did a whole lot better under Clinton. The real divide will be if Obama is not "allowed" to be our president and Palin gets to really begin to put a face on this weird movement that has no real face and is not willing to accept the future as the community wishes it to proceed. The divide will rip across this countries ghettos like noones ever seen before and in my mind will really signal a turning point in the way America is een by the rest of the world. It wont be good. There is a push to become radical in the face of this so-called terror of the muslim world. Palin is a part of that effort to militarize Christianity and instigate the new world order that will not include many critical world allies. Isolationism is the end result for us if Obama is not elected. A world where fearful Christians begin to get as much air-time as Adam Sandler and where the internet becomes a gated community within the USA.
I do hope that somehow...anyhow Obama is put in charge. God Save America and that does not mean she will want to dilly-dally with our political shit-stem.

Palin attempted to ban books as mayor and is still dealing with trooper gate (alleged firing of her sister's former husband -- pure retribution). McCain has a history of abuse of power. What do you think they will do with unlimited power? Personally, I hope we don't find out.

The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).

After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings. Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised "poor judgment".

All five of the senators involved served out their terms. Only Glenn and McCain ran for re-election, and they were both re-elected.

CBS is partly right in saying that the GOP is a party of White people.
