2. Blog Swarm Lessons? Palin Pays Off Sexual Harasser

Blog Swarm Lessons? Palin Pays Off Sexual Harasser

by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse Sun Sep 07, 2008

Like a ripple in a pond, the troopergate scandal gave birth to the sexual harassment scandal, which was just a blip on the megamedia radar screen. Troopergate looks at whether Palin fired a state commissioner for not firing a state trooper, who coincidentally was divorcing her sister. Palin replaced the fired state commissioner with a fellow fundie who was officially reprimanded for sexual harassment. While the national media went on vacation, Alaska media wanted to know why she appointed a known sexual harasser. A local "media firestorm" culminated 2 weeks later in his resignation, which may have been "encouraged" by a $10,000 exit "bonus" from Palin. The chronology of this scandal shows how not even Palin, a graduate of the Bush/Cheney school of executive spin, can defeat a media firestorm and also illustrates how Palin is the right-wing's "feminist" darling by gender only. Remember the Tweety Effect last January? With a little organization, why couldn't we get a blog swarm started on priority Palin and McBush issues to impact megamedia coverage, which in turn may have "enormous impact" on the general election.

Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse's diary :: ::

When news broke that Palin would replace the fired state commissioner with city police chief Chuck Kopp, a woman sent an email to Palin to warn her that the city had validated her sexual harassment complaint against him. The complainant offered to show her files, but no one from Palin's office contacted her before announcing Kopp's appointment the following day. The governor's office confirmed that Palin did receive the email.

Flashing back a few years to when the sexual harassment occurred, Kopp was a city police chief and acting city manager and the complainant was his assistant. After an investigation by the city, Kopp was officially reprimanded for hugging her frequently, massaging her neck and shoulder, kissing her on the cheek (which may have been witnessed by another officer) and grabbing her leg in a car ride. (video of complainant interview at this link)

The complainant objected, and told Kopp that she would not have an "unprofessional relationship." Kopp assured her that it would be a professional relationship and that the "close relationship" that he had with his "previous assistant" would not happen again because it was a "mistake." However, Kopp continued with his sexual harassment and so she filed a complaint with the city. According to the complainant, Kopp admitted (video interview at link) to another city manager that he had hugged and kissed her and how he was "sorry about that."

3. Democrat Obama has edge in race for White House: Harper

Democrat Obama has edge in race for White House: Harper

The Canadian Press Sept 08, 2008

OTTAWA — Stephen Harper has let the world in on a little secret - he thinks Democrat Barack Obama has the edge in the race for the White House.

"I've been following it very closely," the prime minister observed Sunday as he bantered with reporters just before his own campaign plane took off for Quebec City.

Pressed for a personal prediction on the outcome of the U.S. presidential race, Harper at first demurred, suggesting anything he said would be misinterpreted.

After a pause, however, he went on to admit: "I've always said it's the Democrats' to lose."

4. Late shows "Ravings, rants, quirks and quibbles"

Ravings, rants, quirks and quibbles

UNION-TRIBUNE September 8, 2008

WHAT'S SO FUNNY?
As network anchors and convention-embedded reporters last week tiptoed around the news that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's teenage daughter was pregnant, David Letterman said on CBS' “Late Show With David Letterman”:

“The Palin family crisis that we were talking about has been solved; today the baby is being adopted by Angelina Jolie.”

Then: “We're learning more and more about Sarah Palin. Turns out she and her entire family once had a chair-throwing brawl on Jerry Springer.”

For TV comedians, what's off-limits? Nothing, apparently, and that's how it should be. Their job: Observe life, comment and skewer, make fun.

Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel and Bill Maher prick the bubbles of arrogance. Palin and John McCain aren't the only targets. So are Barack Obama and Joe Biden, President Bush, John Edwards and, seemingly for years, Bill and Hillary Clinton.

5. The Littleton Massacre and the Wasilla Massacre
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 08:20 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted

The Littleton Massacre and the Wasilla Massacre

Posted: 08 Sep 2008 The Strange Death of Liberal America

The first Littleton massacre represents a major skirmish in a crucial battle that is still waging over the future of American education and the fate of Liberal America. The shots fired in that first battle aimed squarely at the heart of public schools and their sounds reverberate today in classrooms across the country.

What happened in Littleton in 1993-94 did not receive much media attention, but anyone in education has heard the story. It revolves around a school district take-over by right wing activists campaigning against Outcome-Based Education (OBE), a loose school reform effort aimed at teaching students how to think as well as to memorize facts.

...At the time I wrote that I had never heard of Sarah Palin or Wasilla, Alaska and never did I suspect that someone who essentially had conducted the equivalent of Littleton’s “massacre” would be running for Vice President of the United States. Although a great deal of misinformation is circulating about Sarah Palin, when you examine her actions as mayor you can understand why her nickname is Sarah Barracuda–and it has nothing to do with basketball.

...As mayor her acts of retribution have become the stuff of legend. One was the firing of police chief Irl Stambaugh which eerily presages her recent firing of Alaska’s Commissioner of Public Safety. The week after Palin was elected, Stambaugh asked her if he still had a job. According to notes Stambaugh kept of that meeting

6. Clearly This Is The End Of The World… Not

Clearly This Is The End Of The World…

Not Oliver Willis
Published September 7, 2008 in Barack Obama and John McCain.

I’m seeing that Sen. McCain has a bounce in some of the polls (the reputable ones - anyone who cites Zogbys voodoo Internet polls is getting played). I saw that show week before last, when Sen. Obama got his poll bump. The Obama camp (and observers like me) didn’t trumpet this because when your party gets a week of free advertising it tends to happen.

The Obama camp isn’t freaking out, just like they didn’t freak when Sen. Clinton led by 30+. They have a plan, and while I expect cons & the MSM to make a lotta noise, folks on the left just have to relax.

7. "The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself..." (Ferraro/Palin)

"The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself..."

Monday, September 8, 2008 Posted by Dr. Monkey Von Monkerstein

It's very fitting that Geraldine Ferraro,

the first woman to be nominated for the vice-presidency on a major party ticket in this country, has said that only she knows what Sarah Palin,

the second woman to be nominated for the vice-presidency on a major party ticket, is going through. After all they both are the only ones who know what it's like to be women under that kind of microscope.

I hope they share another thing in common this fall, I hope Ms. Palin also finds out what it's like to be on the losing side of an electoral landslide like ol' Gerry did in 1984. Alas though, I think that as more and more revelations about Ms. Plain rise to the surface she might find out she has more in common with Tom Eagelton than Gerry Ferraro.

10. Obama plans extended meeting with Bill Clinton
AP:

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama plans to lunch with former President Clinton this week in what will be their first extended face-to-face meeting since the bitter primary season.

Obama intends to meet Clinton for a private lunch Thursday at the Clinton Foundation headquarters in New York City, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Sunday. Obama will be in New York that morning for a memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, where he will appear with Republican presidential rival John McCain to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Clinton extended the invitation after he learned Obama would be in town, Burton said.

-snip_

During his speech at the Democratic National Convention last month, Bill Clinton expressed strong support for Obama's candidacy and made clear he will do what he can to get him elected.

11. MTV, VMA host Russell Brand pleads for America to elect Obama
Didn't he know where he was? The VMAs? In La-La Land?

No, this was no place to voice anything like an opinion on world affairs or joke about young Christian pop stars. This is a place to look cool and thank the almighty for the honor of little moon man statuettes.

Early in his opening monologue, Brand pleaded: "Please, America, elect Barack Obama. On behalf of the world."

Most of the crowd, seemingly caught of guard, cheered, though at least a few pop stars didn't. The camera caught Britney Spears _ who in 2003 said citizens should "just trust our president" _ sitting quietly.

13. Virginia Adds 49K New Voters in August
With time running out on its push to register thousands of new voters in Virginia, the Obama campaign is picking up the pace. State election officials told the campaign Friday that 49,000 new voters signed up in August, a sharp increase from the 36,500 who signed up in July and the 28,000 who registered in June.

The campaign had predicted that its August numbers could lag given the difficulty of reaching residents during vacation season. But the August gain puts the Obama campaign very much on track toward its goal of signing up 150,000 new voters by the early October voter registration deadline, on top of the 142,000 new voters who registered during primary season.

There is no way of knowing how many of the newly registered will vote for Obama, especially since Virginia does not record voters by party affiliation. But the campaign is encouraged by the demographic profile of the new voters -- about 40 percent of those who registered in August are aged 25 or under.

The campaign predicts that if it can add 150,000 new registrations before early October, it will net about 60,000 votes out of that in November, assuming that 80 percent of the new voters are for Obama and that they turn out at a rate of 75 percent. Those votes could add up to about 1.75 percent of the anticipated state vote -- not enough to make up for the eight-point edge George Bush had in 2004, but possibly enough to tip the state Obama's way if he can also make gains with existing voters.

Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 01:47 PM by catgirl
I know this is an Obama thread, and people are sick of all the Palin posts, but I think these
two items could affect the race considerably.

Palin makes gaffe. When speaking in Colorodo Springs, she claims Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have gotten
too big for the taxpayers!!. Link to Sam Stein at Huffington Post:

Another Clintonite to Obamaland

September 08, 2008
Categories: Barack Obama

Blake Zeff, a former Clinton press secretary, is starting today as Obama's New York communications director, the latest in what's become a fairly long list of arrivals from the Clinton campaign. A bit before, and immediately after, the campaign, he worked for Chuck Schumer.

A cursory search of Google (and my memory) didn't turn up any anti-Obama zingers in Zeff's list of quotes.

15. Her deadly wolf program
Her deadly wolf program

With a disdain for science that alarms wildlife experts, Sarah Palin continues to promote Alaska's policy to gun down wolves from planes. By Mark Benjamin

Sept. 8, 2008 | Wildlife activists thought they had seen the worst in 2003 when Frank Murkowski, then the Republican governor of Alaska, signed a bill ramping up state programs to gun down wild wolves from airplanes, inviting average citizens to participate. Wolves, Murkowski believed, were clearly better than humans at killing elk and moose, and humans needed to even the playing field.

But that was before Sarah Palin took Murkowski's job at the end of 2006. She went one step, or paw, further. Palin didn't think Alaskans should be allowed to chase wolves from aircraft and shoot them -- they should be encouraged to do so. Palin's administration put a bounty on wolves' heads, or to be more precise, on their mitts.

In early 2007, Palin's administration approved an initiative to pay a $150 bounty to hunters who killed a wolf from an airplane in certain areas, hacked off the left foreleg, and brought in the appendage. Ruling that the Palin administration didn't have the authority to offer payments, a state judge quickly put a halt to them but not to the shooting of wolves from aircraft.
