a wedding. She was a real sweetie. Very petite, very old, very active. She hadmore energy on t he dance floor than most of us forty-somethings.

the clock that ran backwards? I wonder if that is in a museum along with the original computer bug (moth) ?

You run into Grace's presence everywhere you turn in modern computing. The term ''bug'' used to describe a flaw in software code traces back to the day in 1945 when she took the Mark I's successor, the Mark II, apart to find out why it had stopped working. The answer: a moth that had become caught between crucial contacts on one of the computer's relays. The moth carcass was taped into the project's log book with this inscription: ''First actual case of a bug being found.''

And there you have it, the short path to linguistic immortality. Fixing computer problems would forever be known as ''debugging.''

5. Cool. In fact my Dad met Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart at the same time.
My grandparents were members of the National Geographic Society and went to all their monthly luncheons. One time my grandfather was sick so my grandmother took my Dad with her to the luncheon. He was either 13 or 14 at the time. The guest speaker that day was Amelia Earhart. When it was over, my Dad and his mother were walking through the hallways and came upon Eleanor and Amelia. My grandmother introduced them to my Dad and they had a polite conversation for about 5 minutes. This was in either 1932 or 1933.

19. You're younger than I am
but not by much. ;)

My mom was a big Shirley Chisholm fan. She had When I listened, I understood why. That woman could speak! I heard part of her speech when she declared her candidacy for president. They played it around the time that Obama clinched the nod. I was listening in the car and had to pull over because I was crying so hard.

One of my favorite Chisholm quotes: Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt. I know if Shirley were alive today she'd say she wasn't talking about Palin.

27. Bernadette Devlin McAliskey
“Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win.”

Devlin was studying Psychology at Queen's University Belfast in 1968 when she took a prominent role in a student-led civil rights political party called People's Democracy. She opposed James Chichester-Clark in the Northern Ireland general election of 1969. When George Forrest, the MP for Mid Ulster, died, she fought the subsequent by-election on the "Unity" ticket, defeating a female Unionist candidate, Forrest's widow Anna, and was elected to the Westminster Parliament. At the age of 21, she was the youngest MP at the time. She stood on the slogan "I will take my seat and fight for your rights" – signalling her rejection of the traditional Irish republican tactic of abstentionism (being absent from Westminster). She made her maiden speech on her 22nd birthday, rather unconventionally within an hour of taking her seat.

She remains the youngest woman ever to have been elected to British parliament. Her 1969 book, The Price of My Soul, did much to publicise widespread discrimination against Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland.

Her radical left-wing politics resulted in conviction of incitement to riot in December 1969. She had actively engaged, on the side of the residents, in the 'Battle of the Bogside', which is widely marked as the beginning of Northern Ireland's 30 year "Troubles". She served a short jail term.<1> After being re-elected in the 1970 general election, Devlin declared that she would sit in Parliament as an Independent Socialist.

Devlin witnessed the events of Bloody Sunday. She was later infuriated that she was consistently denied the chance to speak in Parliament, although parliamentary convention decreed that any MP witnessing an incident under discussion would be granted an opportunity to speak about it in Parliament.<2> Devlin punched Reginald Maudling, the Secretary of State for the Home Department in the Conservative government, when he made a statement to Parliament on Bloody Sunday stating that the British Army had fired only in self-defence.<3> She was temporarily suspended from Parliament as a result of the incident.<4>

29. Alice Paul
Alice Paul was the architect of some of the most outstanding political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century. Born on January 11, 1885 to Quaker parents in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, Alice Paul dedicated her life to the single cause of securing equal rights for all women.

Few individuals have had as much impact on American history as has Alice Paul. Her life symbolizes the long struggle for justice in the United States and around the world. Her vision was the ordinary notion that women and men should be equal partners in society.

34. If you can see my avatar, you're looking at a "real woman." My mom
was a Special Ed teacher, a cheerleading coach, a girl scout leader, a Sunday School teacher, an unofficial foster mother of at least a half dozen kids. She was an artist, a feminist, she loved puns, she let us adopt stray kittens despite being allergic to cats.

My mom rocked and Sarah Palin hasn't got a thing on her. NO to Palin as VP, whether it be vice president or vice principal.

Who bust their asses each day, engaging the kids, meeting state standards, meeting No Child Left Behind standards, doing lesson plans and IEPs and grading papers at night and on weekends, taking classes in the summer to keep current in their fields, and making a difference in kids' lives.

As far back as my great-grandmother, we've had all kinds of women teachers (and a few men) in my family. They are REAL women!
