On Palin: "Hardly an Earth Mother "
The key question that mothers should ask is this: What sort of world does Palin intend to leave for her new granddaughter? Or to yours?

Palin's public environmental policies offer plenty of clues: It'll be a wounded, polluted planet with a fresh round of extinct animals.

She's photographed in the latest Newsweek sitting on her office couch, which has a dead bear draped over it, complete with its sad, shaggy head. George Bush and Dick Cheney's polluter-friendly environmental policies have been cynical and devastating, and Palin is even worse.

Where to begin? Let's start with greedy, reckless thrill killing. Palin supports a disgusting and unfair blood "sport" where hunters in low-flying airplanes chase Alaska's magnificent wolves and bears through the snow until the animals are exhausted, and then they shoot them. Sometimes the animals don't die right away; it is hard to make a clean kill when you're shooting from a moving airplane.

<snip>

Sounds like Palin will fit into Bush and Cheney's cozy Washington special-interest boots just fine. We'll be the ones on the outside, wishing someone would responsibly step up to preserve some clean air and water for our kids.

I went to the link and so far, the comments people are writing are very encouraging.
This grizzly, blood-thirsty freak needs to be exposed. And the women's vote? I personally don't know of ANY woman who wouldn't be appalled and sickened to see the pictures of the carnage and dead baby animals.
I hope, really hope, the ads get made. I'll send money to any group that will do it.
PETA, Humane Society? SOMEONE PLEASE!

3. So what
Listen, I didn't come here to get in anyone's face, but I do want to express an opinion, and please no one take offense.

This forum is too obsessed with Sarah Palin to the point where you're ignoring issues and focusing on utter b.s., like her daughter, or who gave birth to what baby, or whether she supports the elimination of some of the wolf population by helicopter.

Animal populations that get too large become a problem for people as well as the animals themselves. Too many wolves means starvation for a large population of wolves. Hunting is not a bad thing and a lot of Democrats hunt. Animal control is not about driving animal populations into extinction or fair play, and posts like this one just make Democrats look silly.

Everyone just take a big breath, exhale and start talking issues, because the personal attacks on Palin's family or the ranting about tertiary issues will just lose the election.

Flame away, but I encourage you to focus on real issues.

4. First, welcome to DU.
I'd say that being against things like species endangerment is an issue and not utter b.s. considering it is being done for purely political/corporate reasons. It would suggest that she would do the same with any other issue should it support her desires to please the corporations and help her career.

Therefore, you have your right to support the unnecessary aerial gunning of wolves, etc, but these are still issues Dems need to be concerned with, Independent.

7. Thank you, but ...
Hunting a species is not endangering a species if there is an overpopulation of that species.

I hate to break it to anyone who has never held a rifle, but hunting will never be 'fair' until the animals are armed and trained sufficiently such that as many hunters are killed as animals. Hunting wolves isn't about the meat, as it is with moose and deer, its about keeping the numbers low enough that the animals dont starve.

Bears can be hunted for meat and they tastes like pork but can be a bit greasy depending on the time of year killed. I don't particularly care for bear meat, but some people do and they can be a dangerous nuisance.

Very respectfully, you dont understand the underlying issue, and you're detracting from important issues.

8. Everything I've read
shows that aerial gunning of wolves is done to keep the caribou and other prey stock high, not due to overpopulation.

The underlying issue, is that Palin, the potential "one heartbeat from running the country" VP candidate doesn't give a shit about the environment or the animals. I think I understand that fairly well, thanks.

9. The way I understand it is

the aerial killing of the wolves is not for the WOLVE'S benefit (overpopulation and their starvation). It is so they don't predate on the Caribou and deplete the Caribou population.
The interests of the hunting tour/guide companies is the underlying issue. Large herds of game bring hunting clients. Follow the money, as always. $$

6. The fundies don't give a crap about this
(which disgusts me of course) but they are much more obsessed with all the babies that we "murder." Babies v. polar bears. None of this will sway them or even make them think twice.
