Newsweek: McCain Camp compiling all of McCain's policies on large index cards for Plalin to study

http://www.newsweek.com/id/157696/page/5

<snip>

Palin started intense tutorials last week in a suite of the Hilton Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Stephen Biegun, a longtime foreign-policy hand who last worked on George W. Bush's National Security Council, ran what one participant called a "boot camp on McCain world." Biegun and others briefed her on international issues. McCain's top domestic-policy adviser, economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin, led other sessions. Before Holtz-Eakin even got started, Palin let him know that she likes to get her study points on large index cards. "What we have to do is take all our accumulated policy and John McCain's entire Senate history and get her comfortable with the campaign," Holtz-Eakin told NEWSWEEK.

Others involved in the process say Palin has a long way to go, and they are watching closely to make sure she doesn't get overwhelmed. Over the weekend before the convention, campaign aides made the uncomfortable decision to urge her to go public with her unmarried 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy in order to rebut salacious Internet rumors that the teen was actually the mother of Palin's own newborn child. An aide, speaking anonymously because the matter is sensitive, says that Palin and her husband grew angry about the allegations. "Do I have to show them my stretch marks?" she asked one campaign official. In the midst of the drama, Palin had little time to interact with her family because she was shuffling from one briefing or prep session to another. (In St. Louis, a campaign aide took Todd shopping at a Saks Fifth Avenue, where he bought a new suit to wear to the convention.) At one point McCain, himself tied up in campaign duties, asked an adviser, "Can you make sure she's OK?"

6. Reducing McCain's policies to index cards.
Christ, it's Ronald Reagan all over again.

It gives me a headache just thinking about this.

Joe Biden can give a thoughtful analysis of the current situation in Iraq off the cuff. And contrast that to writing things on index cards for Sarah.

It just boggles the mind that people would actually take this woman seriously.

49. Some people have no need for a suit. Does that make them less?
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 05:10 PM by Disorganized
My husband hasn't needed a suit, hasn't worn one in years. Not having a suit doesn't make him less of a man, doesn't take away from his integrity, his wit, his sensitivity, his intelligence, his creativity. We have lots of legitimate objections to the Palins, but I don't think wearing or not wearing a suit is one of them.

36. Joe Biden don't need no stinkin' flash cards
When you actually know what you're talking about, and you're well-versed, and you've actually been thinking about foreign policy for most of your adult life, well, that shows up when speaking off-the-cuff. When you're thoughtful and well-prepared, you seem natural and bright in a debate setting.

Palin's gonna come off as stilted with canned lines. They're locking her away and loading her full of zingers and bromide, but I just don't think it's going to be effective against someone as formidable as "Joey The Shark" Biden. :-)

40. She's their telegenic, lovable sitcom star -- and learns lines well.
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 03:58 PM by Overseas
She's young enough to memorize the scripts.

They'll include some little quips with punchlines, cued up for the laugh tracks which partisan audiences will dutifully fill in, enhancing her image as the popular TV star.

Her delivery is rather dull, with a limited range of emotions, but the look is good. Relatable, is probably how the RNC boys would characterize it.

Edited to add: Delivery is dull but the perky little "hope you like me" charm is still there. She looks cute while she rolls out her lines. See the tapes of her 2006 gubernatorial debates run on CSpan yesterday. Probably have video on their site.

47. then what they must do and have done before
Get the questions. Get Biden's prep sessions and "book", whatever. Prepare evasions for any unplanned unanswerable questions. Plan rebuttals for all Biden responses based on emotional tone, not substance.
Hammer in a catchy meme that they can take away as a triumphant "clever" gotcha moment. Cozy up to Biden sympathetically as being also a young politician with family tragedy at the start of a national career.

Control. Cheat. Get the talking point and sound bite. Holding her own is a victory. Scoring anything is a triumph. Retreat from details and do rope a dope(even causing misgivings and losing points is not so bad as a major gaffe). Gaffe free means victory. Slickness wins the perception.

There is a whole other level that Biden and Obama must consider as they confidently go in there and pass the experience and competence tests with flying colors- raised far lower on the media flagpole than pulling the wool over the homespun sheep. As Gore and Ann Richards found out, being better and winning a an issue debate means losing the spin game. Then, attacking the prancing loon as the GOP candidate holds the stacked PR deck of cards has been too little, too late and ignored. Hiding behind the dress is now another option.

In an equal debate, short of someone falling over and goofing to an unsympathetic fair minded jury, the GOP already has won the presentation of BEING equal, getting equal mawkish representation in the press and even having "mistakes" sympathetically reported. She shouldn't be on the same stage but the first and last goal of this debate is NOT to be Dan Quayled, to automatically, be default get the 40% vote simply being a GOP nominee scarily bestows on their future dictators.
