Don't fight back. That's the wrong tactic.
You don't fight back. You pick a fight and let those nutters come running after you. Josh Marshall is making this same point over at TPM today.

And from the looks of Obama's town hall in Michigan today, that's exactly what he's doing. Some of the points he hit:

"Drill, Baby, Drill? Who are these people, Cheerleaders for Exxon?"

"Homeland security, national security... they can't even protect you from a Mexican jalapeno!"

"It's the 'No-Change Express!!'"

"These kinds of people wanna fall back on Social Security when they get in trouble... like, when their buddy gave them a hot stock tip and it turned out to be Enron!"

It was a thing of beauty. Obama knows how to pick a fight. He's gonna fight for this on his terms, not theirs.

2. He's right. Picking the fight first is 3/4 of the battle in our political system.

3. GOBAMA! Yes, EXACTLY. Put THEM on the defensive, and keep
them there.
And focus on McLame. IGNORE PALIN. Hell, if she's too sheltered to be able to talk to the media, why the hell should anyone else pay attention to her? Give her exactly as much time as she deserves - NONE.

4. it's a good strategy
if you want to predict an outcome to a fight it has never been about who hits harder but who keeps whom more off balance for longer.

The crowd ate him with a spoon today. It was a beautiful thing to watch.

26. This campaign is just flyin' by, isn't it?
Seems like just yesterday we were watching the Iowa Caucuses, and now, here we are, with the debates starting later this month.

Wow.

15. I have seen this time and time again
I have been an Obama supporter since July 2007. And it is a thing of beauty to watch. He lets it sit a day or two, finds the weakest point of an argument.. the glass jaw if you will, and lets loose with a right hook that nails them every time. And he comes away like Ali, with no a cut on his face.

17. VocanoJen: You're on Notice! You're on my list! Atomic Kitten, too!!!
You both are among a select and very distinct few whom I greatly admire for you calm sense of reason.

Too few give Obama's campaign credit for their craftiness and sophistication.

I like to call it political ju-jitsu, which doesn't look like the kind of fighting some people expect to see.

VolcanoJen, Atomic Kitten, I salute you! :patriot:

And I rec this post!

:hi:

19. This is the very conversation I had with my 84 year old dad this weekend.
He's very wise man. Sometimes. This is something he has learned through difficult experience. You let them go on the defensive. And to do that, you avoid going on the defensive by initiating the argument.

Good for Obama.

This is what I knew we would get from a fresh psyche. He's earned his creds.

I know some don't believe it, but this campaign is at its best when they lead.

23. NICE!!
Eviscerates 'em and smiles while he's doing it.

The repukes did a bit of running with their new slogan. Obama used "change" first, so they jumped on it with "Change is coming."

Yeah, change IS coming. It's name is Obama.

Say goodnight, Gracie!

24. I say get a long 2 x 4 and wield it frequently
Obama can take back control of this race - but he needs to FORCE the spotlight back onto himself by attacking his opponents 'till they are forced to respond (as the Repukes have done to him).
