Obama going after Palin
Obama on Palin: 'You can't just reinvent yourself'

Not long after the Obama campaign signaled it wouldn't go directly after Sarah Palin, the candidate goes right at her.

Well, how about Gov. Palin? She's you know, an up and comer from Alaska. She - they're starting to run an ad now saying she opposed the bridge to nowhere. Well now, let's get the facts clear here. When she was mayor, she hired a Washington lobbyist to get earmarks - pork barrel spending - all the things that John McCain says is bad, she lobbied to get! And got a whole lot of it. When it came to the bridge to nowhere, she was for it until everybody started raising a fuss about it and she started running for governor and then suddenly she was against it!

You remember that? For it before you were against it? I mean you can't just make stuff up. You can't just recreate yourself. You can't just reinvent yourself. The American people aren't stupid.

It's unusual to see the presidential nominee so focused on his rival's running mate, and a sign that her wattage is changing the race a bit.

does supporting the Democratic party and voting for the Democratic nominee mean being 100% enamored and unquestioning?

Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 03:03 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
It's the second woman in American history to run for the job and, therefore, someone who will get tons of media attention. And it's the candidate of the two (McCain and Palin) who has the most popularity in her party. How often has that ever happened in American history (the VP candidate more popular than the Prez in their own party)? McCain was dead in the water until Palin re-energized their base.

22. Look, the GOP wants Obama to go after Palin
Which may be a trap and it may be stupidity. But all the hoopla I'm seeing over here in republican trading land (I work with brokers) is all about Obama and Palin. Obama vs Palin. Its as if McCain doesn't exist anymore, nor Biden.

The main reason Palin was picked was to energize the party and give all these idiots something to get behind. And they're behind her not McCain.

But the weird thing is, Palin's shadow has quickly overtaken McCain and he's regulated to, what was traditionally, the forgotten VP slot. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I can see pluses and minuses for everybody on that.

Good or not, this is the reality. The GOP wants to talk about Palin and nothing more. No issues, no plans, no politics. They want a white woman to take on a black man. I believe they think its the only way to combat Obama because they can't get past his skin and deal with the man instead of the color.

Sad but true from where I sit.

We are RUNNING full force into a trap.

It should be:

MAIN EVENT - Obama vs. McCain
Subcard - Biden vs. Palin

Instead, we have:

MAIN EVENT - Obama vs. Palin over who is more/less qualified
Biden with no where to go
McCain grinning while the two "young 'uns" work out their differences and he appears above the fray

Please let this end. Obama, meet John McCain, your opponent. You have one job... destroy him. DON'T TAKE THE BAIT!!!

38. I'm with you on that.
But what the other side does, and does really well, is talk only about what they want to talk about. And in this case its a never ending chorus of Obama-Palin comparisons. So long as Palin gets press, that's all you'll see from them. As far as I can tell the only one who's talking is Palin.

When Republicans talk to me about Palin, I ask them who, exactly, is running for President? I thought McCain was, I thought he makes policy, I thought this was his campaign, I thought he was calling the shots. So, I ask them, where the fuck is McCain?

They have no answer and try to talk about Palin again. Its like trying to talk your way through a brick wall.

McCain is going to come out at one of the debates and say "you have been comparing your experience with a no experience VP candidate. I assume you have admitted to yourself that your experience is nothing compared to mine." This is a HUGE trap and we need to avoid it. Biden needs to get the hell out and do his job.

56. Yes, Biden should... but this is still okay.
Obama is saying that Palin is like McCain. That's all he's saying.

"First for it, then against it. SOUND FAMILIAR?" This is his driving point about how McCain is flip-flopping, and so is Palin.

I too would prefer that Biden deliver the hard-hitting punches. However, I'm not sure that his "punches" are going to make it into the media.

It's an awkward Catch-22. As the punches become more vicious, eventually, the media will find a way to spin it against Obama.

Right now, I think it's his supporters who are clamoring for him to take a punch. But I'm not sure that this is what mainstream America wants to see.

That's why I think it has to be the ads, and US.

26. That's because McCain is as exciting to the modern day Republican as plastic.
That is to say, not at all. Every Republican I know wanted anybody but McCain. I have no idea how McCain got the nomination when interest in him is so shockingly low. Maybe they were too busy voting in open primaries to draw out our blood letting, I dunno.

Palin, on the other hand, is exactly what the modern day, Jesus loving (and misunderstanding), pro-corporation over national interests, small government, arm-chair warrior wants. She looks good on film and says empty things that invoke an emotional response. Just like the Chimp. (OK, "looks good" is a relative term. Palin, attractive. Bush comedic).

He deflates her gender "rock star" status in the GOP very nicely here:

Biden Says Palin's Gender Doesn't Change His Debate Game
Posted by Ryan Corsaro

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

(KALISPELL, MT.) - Joe Biden says he’s not expecting anything different from what he’s used to in taking on Sarah Palin in the upcoming vice presidential debate.

“I’ve got to say, I find it fascinating. It seems like the only people in the room that think that debating a woman is going to be fundamentally different are people who don’t hang around with smart women,” Biden said aboard his campaign plane as he traveled to Montana today.

“I mean, you know, the idea that I’ve not debated tough, smart women. Come to the Senate, man. Take on Barbara Mikulski. You know, uh, take on Olympia Snowe. You know, take on Dianne Feinstein. Take on Barbara Boxer. Take on you know, the list goes on.

I remember saying, right after Palin debuted, that the Obama campaign
should define her before the McCain campaign managed to build a mythos around her. They didn't. Now she's got this image as a maverick, family values-loving, brave, independent woman. It's going to be really hard to break through the bullshit now. Especially since the media has fallen in love her her rather than torn her apart for her blatant lies and crazy-ass views.

63. Biden is a very poor choice in this context
Biden is a sweetie and authentic... but he is NOT the same ilk as the smiling spitting viper that Palin is showing herself to be.

Biden is not the best speaker... kinda meanders around. It is too bad. Obama could take her down in a minute with his oratory... but Biden... bad news.

68. WHAT? Have you ever seen Biden speak in person?
He does a great job...honestly, there's nothing to worry about in that department!

67. It's fine
McCain can't say he was debating/comparing experience he was slamming her head for lying and trying to be something she's not.

He didn't fall into the trap and he's effectively just looping her in with McCain/Bush/Cheney.

Also, I thought Joe was excellent on MTP but then I'm up for listening to what is said and think in larger than soundbite segments.
