McCain's parents dunked 2 year old John in cold water to "cure" his intense temper tantrums...

Historians point out that it's not unusual for a president to have a fierce temper, but most knew how to keep it under control.

"Harry Truman wrote scathing letters, but he almost never sent them," said author Robert Dallek.

"George Washington spent a lifetime trying to control his temper," added historian Richard Norton Smith.

But Washington didn't have YouTube replaying videos of his tantrums, nor did he have to make decisions about nuclear weapons.

At age 2, McCain's tantrums were so intense that he'd hold his breath for a few minutes and pass out. His parents would dunk him in cold water to "cure" him, he wrote in his memoir, "Faith of My Fathers."

"I have spent much of my life choosing my own attitude, often carelessly, often for no better reason than to indulge a conceit," he wrote. He conceded that some of his actions have been embarrassing, and "others I deeply regret."

He was a tough little guy. At Episcopal High, he was a 114-pound wrestler classmates called "Punk" and "McNasty."

Richey, though, noted that such monikers weren't unusual in those days. "There was a tremendous amount of sarcasm in the way we talked to each other at Episcopal," he recalled. "That's the way we all talked to each other."

McCain, Richey said, "was not looking for a fight. He was feisty."

8. Indeed!
His mental scars are far worse than the physical... and they, imho, make him unsuitable for POTUS.

7. One of my roommates had an uncontrollable temper.
I get mad and angry but I'm never out of control. I'm always able to think my way through something that has pissed me off and then take appropriate action. I thought everyone was like me, but I found out differently from roommate who actually went into uncontrollable rages at times when setbacks came her way. In her less emotional moments she would beg for forgiveness and explain to me that she had no control when one of these fits overcame her. I started worrying about the sharp pointy things we had in our kitchen. She was actually a genuinely nice person other than that but I was happy when her job took her to another city. It was then that I started learning about Bugsy Siegal, the gangster, who was called Bugsy because of the uncontrolled rages that he had when set off. If this is John McCain, I want no part of him in the White House. I think I would prefer the town drunk that we have now.

14. Wow. That is really freaky. Is it like some kind of bipolar disorder?
I've seen people really, really angry and screwily manipulative and deluded but an uncontrollable rage? Happy to say I've never seen it.

15. Maybe. She was never in therapy when I knew her and maybe never has
been. I don't know because I lost touch with her a long time ago.

9. I find that more sad than anything.
There are stories about Bush's upbringing I find similarly sad. Of course, once you're an adult you have culpability for your own actions, but how many "bad" people in this world could have become something quite different with a little more parental tenderness? Then again, maybe that's just my bleeding liberal heart talking.

10. Yeah, well that worked well, huh?
I think that sort of lack of self-control is a very, very dangerous thing in a president.

13. It was just a fraternity prank.
The sheer magnitude of the young McCain's temper tantrums rendered quaint many of the provisions of the Geneva Conventions.
