1. The light red and light blue are "leaning" states?
Just not sure of the difference. Thanks.

7. Palin Supported Pat (Holocaust diminisher) Buchanan for President in 2000
A recent sermon given, in her presence, at her church, said God was exacting judgment in the form of terrorist attacks on Israel because Jewish People refused to convert to Christianity.

This won't help in Florida and SHOULD be a enormous red flag everywhere

16. I had the thought that Palin's "red meat" speech might go down over time as somewhat
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 08:52 AM by yellowcanine
equivalent to Pat Buchanan's barn burner in Houston in 1992. It played well with the wingnuts at the time but scared off the independents and more nonpartison Republicans. I suspect there is going to be some of that with Palin's speech. Florida is definitely one place it would show up so this result could be predictive of what will happen in other swing states as the Palin VP candidacy sinks in and the new car smell wears off.

17. Interesting (if sexist) comment from my mother,
a Florida senior and lifelong (til now) Republican voter.

"Palin should be home taking care of her family!"

Maybe representative of her demographic? (Senior, white, born and bred in the midwest)

22. Plug for Florida phone bankers. My family is in FL phone banking and canvassing and tells me that
Florida really needs volunteers. You can call from anywhere to Florida through Obama's website.

Sadly they say many in the democratic party do not show up for canvassing and it's a lonely job.

I did not like hearing that.

8. Really not much of a McCain bounce anywhere
at least not a significant one. I can't find any State that's gone to leaning McCain from even outlined blue, am I missing any?

Anything with an outline is basically a toss-up so the McCain/Cheney2 ticket received a small national bounce bringing the national vote back to where it was prior conventions but didn't do much at all on the State level.

Nice to see if I'm reading it correctly.

18. Problem is if there were a sustained bounce it would be another week or so before
it showed up in state polls. So by the end of next week we should know. I think Florida is predictive, though. Ohio was outlined blue and now it is outlined pink. But Ohio has been very volatile all along so I think it is a special case.

23. The site showed a very volatile election in 2004
Look at the dates from todays date in 2004 and click forward toward election day. It was all over the place flipping 30 and 40 electoral votes between Kerry and Bush. If I read it correctly it showed a really big shrubbo bounce after the conventions because Kerry's convention wasn't seen as all that successful (kind of wishy washy and no real attack on the pukes). The debates almost saved Kerry because he pretty much destroyed lil boots. Kerry's refusal to rebut the outrageous attacks brought on by KKKarl Rove sealed his fate IMO. Kerry's team believed the American people were too smart to fall for the bullshit but that was obviously proven wrong.

This is a new cycle and Obama doesn't look to be taking the bullshit handed out by McCain/Cheney2. Nice to see him call them liars yesterday for an example.

30. If it showed Kerry winning Ohio, it was correct.
But fellow Democrats told people reporting on election manipulation in the field that they were just "conspiracy theorists" and should shut up and accept the loss.

Republicans used various methods of depressing the Democratic vote count. Distributing too few machines to Democratic districts to create long lines. Challenging voters at the polls to slow the voting process down. Robocalls misdirecting voters. Caging lists.

Lots of methods, so any one method our people on the ground complained about was called "too small to affect the outcome." Add them up and hundreds of thousands of Democratic votes went uncounted.

19. A lot of those new state polls are Rasmussen so this is probably meaningless.
I do not believe that Pennsylvania is that close, for one. Hillary was strong in PA and many of her supporters moved to Obama in response to the Palin pick.

24. I meant the apparent small McCain bounce in state polls here is misleading
because many of the polls are Rasmussen. Overall I think this map is quite helpful. At least it shows where Obama can usefully spend his energy and have a reasonable expectation of a return -

Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Colorado for sure. I don't think he has to work as hard in PA as this map would suggest, though.

33. He needs to work, but Pa has overplayed as a "swing" state ...
I keep posting this.

1) Outside of this latest poll, BO has consistently for months been about 5-7 up in polling in Pa.
2) As noted, Pa has a strong D governor, which 1) Gives him a strong advocate and can plug him into his network 2) Helps to protect against any R shanigans.
3) Rick Santorum was one of the most powerful Rs in the country, and spent more money defending his senate seat than anyone else has spent ever - he lost to Bob Casey, and it was not close.
4) BO has as good of an ESTABLISHED 'ground game" in Pa as he does anywhere else. McCain has none other than the usual R machinary, which IS formidable, but BO has the energy and numbers.
5) Pa has registed something insane, like 400 or so new voters as Ds since the start of the primary - you have to believe the great majority of them are BO voters, and are not being caught in "polling."
6) All of that existed BEFORE he brought on Biden - who has long been refered to as the "Third senator from Pa." He is very popular in Philly, where the election will be won, and in Scranton, the opposite corner and fourth most popular area of the state.

IF BO were to lose Pa, it will be with him having gotten washed out. It won't be a "swing" state.
