Is there any way for me to help those of you in the battlegrounds?

Sure I can go to the pro-Obama stuff here in NY, but Obama is gonna win NY anyway, What can I do to help the rest of you?

1. Go canvas in PA
If you live close to PA, the Obama campaign can use more volunteers in PA to go door to door.

3. I live in NY and I'm going to PA next weekend. On Obama's website, there are phonebanking
parties for NH and PA, check those out. Also, if you're in NYC there's a voter registration drive at Hunter College next Tuesday 9/16.

4. Go to a Red or Purple State that's in play.
The Obama website can help you to help.

Contribute money.

Make calls.

Get family and friends to make calls. I have a whole extended family network making calls, sending emails, writing notes to voters who live in states in play.

5. Obama's website will give you ways you can help
....you can also call the local Obama office and ask them. I did a lot of telephone work during Kerry's campaign, so I'm sure that option is available with Obama as well.

6. Ideas...
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 09:21 AM by Chan790
Call the campaign office in PA. I assume you have weekends off...take the train down from Schenectady (Not Amtrak...local rail is cheap.) and volunteer in the form of feet on the ground.

Or

Find a newspaper message board for the major paper in a major area of a swing state...and go native. Post facts, refute RW talking points. Realistically, if you can get 4 or 5 friends to help...you can lock down the idiots and inform the public. Seriously, start posting responses to political articles in newspapers in Akron, Boulder, Santa Fe, Richmond, NoVA, Detroit, Flint or where you feel you'd fit in best. Once you feel you know the community well...write LTTEs.

14. Um...it's in your profile.
That's how I knew.

I'm not psychic...well...I can predict the gender of the unborn 100% of the time prior to sonograms and I can read women's minds ("Wow...that Chan guy is really sweet, but he's about as interesting as mud and all he ever talks about is Barack Obama.") but beyond that...I'm not psychic.

I've never canvassed before, but I feel absolutely certain that I am more needed on the ground than ever right now. We need to fight the good fight!

12. Come to PA!! It's a short, $10 bus ride down the turnpike
and we are a battleground state. In fact, IMHO, the PA race will be decided in the PHilly suburbs. PM me and I can send you an e-mail listing some of the offices that just opened up.

15. EASY! You can make phone calls through Obama's website. Call FL, OH, etc
I'm starting this now. PM me if you have difficulty getting the list of phone numbers.

Phone banking is very important. Personal contact is the key to getting people to vote.

Also people need help getting absentee ballots. Especially the elderly.

You will only be calling registered democrats so it's not depressing!

17. 3 contacts. That's what it takes to change a vote.
Or so I was told by the Emily's list people. A voter needs to be contacted 3 times--preferably one of the contacts should be face to face--in order for your message to be effective. It doesn't need to be the same person making the contact each time, but each independent (or "blank" as we say in the trade) voter needs 3 contacts to be persuaded. And you won't be successful with every one, but you can target. Information is power.

18. Is there a script you have to follow when you make these calls?
I live in Maryland (a very shiny blue state) and I would also like to help.

 or, if you can't actually go there make phone calls there, instead. Good luck and thanks! :hi:

I'm like you, living in CA, and I just signed up for Camp Obama for a special w/e training and then off to swing state Nevada.

22. I just heard that FL really needs volunteers to make calls badly
and you can do it from the Obama website.

Apparently, volunteers are not showing up down there (maybe there were Republicans in sheep's clothing)

26. Sign up for...
PA Out of State Volunteers at www.barackobama.com Also there is an Albany for Obama group, www.albanyforobama.com, they have weekly meetings, phonebanking and weekend trips to NH. There is a meeting tomorrow night I think, that I was planning on attending. I sent them a message about trips to PA since it is closer than NH for us, so hopefully they will discuss that tomorrow.
