I love this site. It's the only place I can go when I'm in my classes at college to be with my own "kind." The instructor I have for several classes is a huge Palin lover and will take time out of class to bash Obama, and there are so many students that agree with her. It's aggravating! Or if you are concerned that it may have an adverse effect on your grades, take it to the Dean and ask to keep your name in confidence and say the same thing and ask the Dean to have a chat with her about it. a few folks even sent me PM's commenting on how nice it was to have me around (with sincerety). I even had 2 posters, who I think best to leave nameless, follow me for about a month from thread to thread and twist my posts beyond all recognition and try to start a flame war until the mods started deleting their posts. It certainly gave me a quick learn on how some on DU think this is a blood sport rather than a conversation. I have yet to know the joy of being told I am being put on ignore. I'm told that is the height of DU membership. :)

that's why I welcome people whenever I see they are newbies.

If they're genuinely people who want to participate, it turns them off and it's not representative of the big open tent that Democrats should have. I personally try to be gracious-- if they say something that could be judged to be possibly well-intentioned, I usually try to avoid any insults or hysterics and just correct them.

Otherwise, I usually try not to feed the troll and just alert them. Or else, if I feel like it, I refute their idiotic talking points with actual truth and facts and logic instead of the kneejerk insults and overemotional rhetoric. This is also why I love Obama because he gives people hell by backing it up with cold hard truth.

Honestly, after the reception I got today, I was ready to just say "fuck this place." And then a couple of very kind people sent me private emails and welcomed me, and basically told me "illigitimi non carborundum." So...I'm going to try and hang in there.

Thanks for the welcome. I am a life long democrat who has been angry for the last 8 years, and now watching the country go to hell in a hand basket thanks to the republicans. Obama is the best thing I have seen come along for along while. I want him to win so bad I can taste it. I found this website, read it for awhile, and had to join. I can come here and relate to my own kind and when I am angry at watching the republicans, and want to throw something through my TV, I come here for comfort. Plus I learn so much info that I can pass on to others to help the dems win this.

My favorite thing about DU is the sanity here regarding McCain/Palin. The M$M is mostly shilling for the GOP and it literally makes me sick to watch any more. McCain is a pathetic liar and Palin is just a grotesque extremist. I don't think I've ever hated a ticket more and I am so tired of constantly hearing random people gushing about Palin in particular. :puke:

BTW, I met Alex Jones in person at an event in Houston. A hardcore REAL conservative net friend of mine begged me to go hear him do a Q&A after a screening. It was really something.... I may not sport my tinfoil hat in public.... but I am definitely open to more conspiracy-thought than I was before. And the audience was VERY diverse. It was about 35% Republican (old school), 20% Democrat, and the rest were either independents or those who said they are against all politicians.

edited to add: I am also in Ron Paul's district. I agree with him about 20% of the time, which is about 19% more than I agree with other Republicans.

Thank you for posting this. As a newbie who was attacked today for posting a perfectly innocent request, and accused of being a troll, I really do appreciate this. I realize there are a lot of trolls around here, but whatever happened to common decency and giving newcomers the benefit of the doubt? I don't spend hours and hours and hours a day here. Sorry I can't get my numbers up to a level that seems to imply legitimacy for what somebody here called "the Thought Police."

And when someone is an obvious troll, why not just alert on them and let the post sink instead of repeatedly kicking it to the top with "thank you for your concern", "I smell Pizza", and all of the extremely original and clever variations?

I find the DU Thought Police a little creepy sometimes.

Some folks will have 10 or 20 posts or even 100, but if you pull up their history, 90% of it is negative, but if you did NOT, you could brush off the latest as nothing big. Sometimes it's a matter of "the last straw."

And sometimes we are wrong.

I suspect that it relates to primitive tribal instincts where people like to band together in a pack to taunt, humiliate, and celebrate the impending demise of, an outsider who may or may not be what they claim to be. Because this is an anonymous message board the normal social rules of decorum do not exist- a fact that the howling mob exploits to the fullest extent. I wonder if any anthropologists hgave studied this aspect of message boards?
