............................

ROTC Cadet, Air Force Captain, Free Republic diarist, James Dobson quoting conservative, 2 time Bush voter. Church worship leader. These all describe me. And there are more just like me. My evolution to progressive awareness has been a slow one, but is has never gone faster than in the last 3 or 4 months. How do I describe myself now - a progressive conservative, of course (if there is such a thing)!

So why am I and those like me out here? I am out here because I see through the hysteria that the right wing has become. I know the abandonment of principles when we see it. I despise in today's Republican Party what I was always told were the worst traits of the 'left' in years past. I know better these days. I have come to the realization that in many ways I left my brain turned off for far too long. I listened to those I was supposed to agree with, and never tried to be, as Rush Limbaugh says, a 'truth seeker'. Well I am a truth seeker now, I find truth much more often when I listen to Rachel Maddow that I ever did on Rush. I am able to see (on the right) political opportunism, shameless lying, rampant political positioning, and a party leadership that has forfieted all claim to trust.

.....................

What do I see in Barack Obama? I see an intelligent, thoughtful, unflappable leader. I see a patriot who is rising up and putting himself forth for leadership of this great nation in its hour of need. Goodness knows, I would not want the job. I see a man who will perform the duties of the President of the United States with sober and thoughtful judgement. I see a man with the breadth and depth who can address many of these problems we face as a nation. I see a man who wants to bring us together. I don't pretend it will be easy, it will not be. There are big problems to be solved. We will need to come together, those of us on each side of the political spectrum. First to get Barack Obama elected, then to work to make America a better place. I will do my part to convince those I know that a vote for McCain will be a disaster.

So, progressives on the left, know that there are those of us on the right that have been listening and paying attention. We have heard what Barack Obama is saying. We look forward to working together with you to make this nation a better place. Godspeed in the next 2 months.

16. YES PLEASE DIGG IT!
The other thread with the digg link has about 500 views and only about 50 diggs. We can do better than that. This story needs to get out.

Here's the other thread on same story:

8. I love these stories because it really shows that Obama's whole working together thing
isn't something to be sneered at. And frankly, the jeers that his bipartisanship gets comes from both parties. So I'm always happy to hear these accounts of people who used to only see one side now opening up their worldview and adding more facets to their perspectives.

9. Progressive and conservative are not mutually exclusive. True conservatives
would be wise to avoid the republican party as it currently exists.

10. Welcome.. and thank you for your thoughtfulness. It's reassuring to know
that there are "progressive conservatives" like you who want to take back America.

God Bless you!

12. this is VERY close to my story...
except i was more a right-leaning conservative/libertarian, than a true blue Republican...

but the rest is the same

i don't really know what happened...when you get older and make more money, aren't you supposed to get MORE conservative?

i have some very conservative beliefs...
i'm a church-going, bible-study attending Christian. i actually OWN Warren's "Purpose Driven Life"
i despise vehemenently disagree with moral relativism
i listen to dr. laura regularly and agree w/ her sentiments at least 60% of the time
i own a gun. a BIG one, LOL
my household income approaches $200,000

i just feel...my eyes and heart have been opened in the past 5-6 years

Katrina was a catalyst. that...and the friggin VICE PRESIDENT responding with "So?"

they really don't care. THEY DON'T CARE. it's like a punch in the gut.

i would have voted third party again (hell, i might have written in Ron Paul, LOL)...but then Obama came along, and somehow, some way...my cynicism just kind of evaporated. i am completely and totally emotionally invested.

i was arguing with another die-hard republican friend earlier this week...he sees it as just a 'lesser of two evils', and alway thinks Republicans are the WAY lesser

i told him (and please forgive my language, but i was making a point to him) that "we're all taxed anyway, we'll actually be taxed LESS under Obama...and since i'm being taxed anyway, seems a lot LESS evil to me for those tax dollars to be going to support a woman on welfare who won't quit having kids than to invade another country to turn them into Jesus lovers so we can take their oil, and proceed to destroy and kill hundreds of thousands of people"

hmmmm...i didn't realy mean to say all that, it's more personal than i would normally share, it just started flowing...hope i didn't offend, but my basic premise was just that..i know how that blogger feels.

13. Thanks for sharing your story. We really are all more alike than we are different. It's just that
the Powers That Be have a vested interest in keeping us from talking to each other and figuring out how to get this country back on track. United we stand ... well, you know the rest ...

I've had that same discussion with Republican acquaintances about taxes -- I remember telling one of them, when he celebrated Kerry's loss by saying, "Well, at least our taxes won't go up", that one way or another, GW & Co. would get his money, it just wouldn't be as obvious as raising taxes. And when you look at what they've done to the economy, and how much less those dollars are worth now, it didn't turn out so well for him after all. His business has suffered, the value of his house and investments have decreased, but by God, he's not paying higher taxes!

14. I thank you too
Not crazy about the welfare part, but it's a perspective that a Republican would understand when you explain it to them like that. Whatever it takes! So glad you saw the light!
