And her first words to Obama were "well isn't that the same thing Senator McCain said", she's definitely in full asshat mode tonight.

17. Obama. I'm totally impressed more and more.
How do we come together in times when there isn't a crisis.

This man inspires me. And this isn't just some "I like him because he's this or that". It's because he has thought it all out. This is not a trivial pursuit for the presidency. He has spent years carefully working out the details.

I'm anxious to see his office come to fruition.

He actually means what he says. McCain was busy inserting his stump speech into his answers - he doesn't give a shit - and that stuff about not wanting the government to do things just means he really doesn't want the government to one damn thing to make service possible.

64. The ONLY thing that will improve our public schools is to abandon 2 things:
1. Local control;
2. Local property taxes earmarked for their local school systems only.

A NATIONAL crisis needs a NATIONAL approach and solution.
Curricula need to be established for EVERY CHILD across the board.
Wealthy families in THIS DEMOCRACY do NOT deserve a better, more advanced, more chock-full-o-nuts education for their children than do poor families.

I retired from a public school system after 30 years.

with you points.

Financing, Curriculum, and STANDARDS should be a 50:50 proposition between the states and federal government.

I agree with you about nationalizing and equaling the playing field between wealthy and poor students, but:

"Curricula need to be established for EVERY CHILD across the board."

No, no, no, NO, NO.

The "lowest common denominator" curriculum idea is a failure. My mother was a teacher too so I'm not oblivious to your pain as a public teacher, but my mom taught special ed and learning disabled kids. And they were subject to the same bullshit cookie-cutter standards as every other student. These are kids who couldn't grasp pre-algebra but were being told if they didn't pass Algebra I, they'd never graduate.

Across-the-board curricula inevitably leads to less choices and less quality education. Not every student learns the same and not every student needs the exact same studies as their peers.

What we NEED, in terms of curricula, is a rebirth of the school systems of old.
Strong Academic path for those interested in college and beyond.
Strong Vocational path for those interested in apprenticeships and going into the workforce directly out of high school.

Right now our school systems are lean on vocational education which does a severe disservice to students who may be happy being a plumber or a HVAC specialist. They could be learning this stuff in a strong Vocational Education program and go from school to an apprenticeship and ultimately move to being a productive member of society. As it stands now, public schools say: Here, take this so you can get into college. What happens when they don't go to college? They make minimum wage at some fast food joint because they got a lowest common denominator education and no practical skills.

Bill Clinton was brilliant, and look how well our country was run.

George Bush was average, but affable, and look at our economy and foreign policy.

Obama is brilliant, and we need that right now. Why is this race even close?

96. I would have like to have heard, re: military service
and how we get people to want to serve, something about not sending men and women on cavalier adventures like the Iraq invasion. If the government could be trusted to use military force as a last resort, people might be more willing to join. But when you can't trust your own government to use good judgment in where it puts its forces, you don't exactly want to risk being sent to a "dumb war," as Barack put it.

away peoples full potential and worth, making us not believe in ourselves. Taking away educational opportunities for our kids, to me it is a culture war, to them you do not empower the people that is what they don't want, they want to control people by fear or some other demeaning way.

that is why we can do better.
