Media suppressing new McCain Gaffe?

So, here's my question: why isn't this the single biggest story of the day? Why wouldn't this rival, say, the "lipstick on a pig" nonsense? Why aren't the cable networks spending the afternoon analyzing the consequences of McCain's horrendous and humiliating mistake?

Put it this way -- imagine if Obama told a national television audience last night that he feels like a "celebrity," and finds it easy to think that he's "better and smarter than everyone else." What do you suppose the reaction would be from the political world?

Before you say, "The Obama campaign isn't pushing this aggressively," realize that the Obama campaign held a conference call this morning, with Dick Durbin and Rahm Emanuel, precisely to push this story as hard as they could.

And yet, this probably isn't going anywhere. Joe Scarborough said this week that the media will talk about "whatever the McCain campaign wants us to talk about." NBC News Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker praised the McCain campaign for its ability to "drive the news cycle day after day."

I get the feeling there's a media decoder ring, and the Obama campaign doesn't have one.

this is the situation. what do we do about it?

And it should be...time to focus on what this nation needs.

I noticed it too and said that it should be used in ads or viral videos.

Looks, it's egotistical to assume that whatever strikes you (or in this case, the writers at the Washington Monthly) as significant is suddenly the most important issue of the campaign. Obama made similar concessions, admitting that '(people) yak in the senate' while praising small-town people for getting actual things done. To a Republican, that's like 'Obama admits he's an elitist!!1!!'

The point of columns like these is for writers like this one to brand themselves as being 'different' - no more, no less. My news headlines this morning are in fact telling me about how Obama is attacking McCain, just not on this particular issue. Media outlets can't cover every last utterance at once as i it were the most important because most people want to hear hear just one or two political stories a day that give them a snapshot of what's happening.

And there is nothing very earth-shattering about these statements by McCain. They might end up in an attack ad at some point but it's not really shocking or revelatory. Now quit snivelling and get to attacking McCain on something substantial, like his lack of economic knowledge or his looney-tunes running mate or the fact that he's apparently not in control of his own campaign.

Obama is attacking McCain on this issue. So why isn't it reported?

Setting up a conference call just to discuss a single item usually forces at least a little media mention.

Senator Seven-Houses does not represent the American people! He represents the Corporate Oligarchy!

This clip needs to be shown far and wide, as if we needed further evidence that he's not the right choice!
