Not sure where to post this: Can you tell me about canvassing?
I am very seriously considering going to Pennsylvania to help canvas for Obama in the coming weeks. I live in Upstate NY and can be to eastern PA within about three hours. I have never canvassed before, however, and am really not sure what to expect. Can someone give me a general idea of what I should say/do? The best way to approach people? I spoke to someone last night who gave me some suggestions that seemed helpful, but I'd love to get more info from those of you who have done this before. I didn't do much except phone calls in 2004, but I am ready to go out and do more this time around. There is too much at stake and my children deserve this from me.

Thoughts?

(Mods, feel free to move if this isn't posted in the correct forum. I spend most of my time here these days, but understand if it should be elsewhere. Thanks!)

1. Hi, I'm the Queen of Canvassing! First of all, relax, if you are
canvassing for Obama, you will get some training before you go out. You will report to an Obama headquarters and get a street list, directions and a "script". Usually there are a bunch of questions that they want you to ask, fliers to leave with people and a form to fill out after each house you visit. Hopefully they will have you paired with someone else so you are not going out on your own. I would strongly suggest that you have a partner. My biggest problem with this when I first started out was the fear of rejection. I found that most people were friendly even if they didn't agree with me also, I think they will tell you that the purpose of canvassing is to get information , not to debate people. So just soak it in. I found that people really wanted to tell you what they thought and what their problems were and just when you thought you were bothering folks they would follow you down the driveway telling you what they thought.

This is a longwinded way of saying that canvassing is something you have to get used to but once you do it is an amazing experience. Good luck, have fun!
