Rural Alaska steeped in sexual violence
Posted 1/30/2008

By Rachel D'oro, Associated Press
ANCHORAGE — The state has long suffered the highest sexual assault rate in the nation, and the problem is worst in rural areas, according to a report released Tuesday.

The numbers are unacceptable, troopers said at a news conference Tuesday detailing the study.

"Each of us has a role in ending sexual violence in Alaska," said trooper Col. Audie Holloway. "We need to think into the future."

In nearly 1,000 cases studied over two years, the average age of victims was 16, while the average age of those accused was 29. In four out of five cases, the suspects were relatives, friends or acquaintances.

Overall, 89% of the victims were female. One out of three cases were reported more than a month after the abuse occurred, leaving evidence hard to collect.

Snip> much more.

And on the dropout rate (video):

I think we really need to be looking into the reality of the state Ms. Palin has been "governing."

2. Amnesty International says so too. And about Native women...
http://www.amnestyusa.org/violence-against-women/maze-of-injustice/page.do?id=1021163&n1=3&n2=39&n3=1410

In failing to protect Indigenous women from sexual violence, the USA is violating these women’s human rights. Indigenous women’s organizations and tribal authorities have brought forward concrete proposals to help stop sexual violence against Indigenous women – but the federal government has failed to act.

Amnesty International is calling on the US government to take the first steps to end sexual violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women:
- Work in collaboration with American Indian and Alaska Native women to obtain a clear and accurate understanding about the prevalence and nature of sexual violence against Indigenous women;
- Ensure that American Indian and Alaska Native women have access to adequate and timely sexual assault forensic examinations without charge to the survivor.
- Provide resources to Indian tribes for additional criminal justice and victim services to respond to crimes of sexual violence against Native American and Alaska Native women.

So Sarah, what have you done on behalf of women?

Oh that's right, you charge them for their own damn rape kits.

6. Putting this together with forced child-bearing for rape victims, and charging them
for the rape-kits needed to prosecute rapists, Palin seems to live in a world where women are supposed to be hunted.

9. somewhere, in the deepest recesses of the ultra Christian mind, is
the notion that a woman doesn't get raped, she asked for it.............and that is why Palin didn't care if the rape victim had to pay for her own rape kit.

10. i keep thinking about palin's ideas about rape.
if she wants to make the victims pay for the rape kit. does she think that the women are to blame for what happened to them or something? is she one of those folks who think that women ask for it? i mean, she opposed abortion even in the instance of rape. though i have not heard such things from her mouth, using the circumstancial evidence, i tend to think this woman is no friend to women. she probably thinks women deserve what they get or something.

11. Alaska's sexual assault rate is THREE TIMES the national average.

More snips from the article>

The study is believed to represent only a fraction of abuse actually committed in trooper jurisdiction. Still, Alaska has had the nation's highest per capita occurrence since 1995. According to statewide figures for 2003 and 2004 alone, there were 89 rapes per 100,000 people, almost three times the national average of 32 per 100,000, said Andre Rosay, the Justice Center's interim director.

Snip>

Capt. Steve Arlow, commander of the detachment, said the numbers were not surprising. Sexual assaults account for the bulk of work done by troopers, he said.

"Our troopers are out there dealing with it every day," he said.

Looks as if rape is a way of life out there. And Sarah Palin is not on the side of the victims, whose average age is 16.

12. If I lived in Alaska
I'd take advantage of the lack of gun laws and carry at all times. I don't think I'd want to live there though. It's not even the weather that would bug me; it's all the republicans and the type of culture that mind-set brings about.

This is important. It gives the lie to Palin's "feminism." Thank you.
