I finally figured out what about Palin that disturbs me so much as a woman.
We all know she is disingenuious and not well informed and puts out political BS with which we all disagree vehemently. I have had a real visceral reaction to her and couldn't quite tap what it was that prompts such feelings. Sarah Palin is a caricature, a cartoon figure, a creation of fantasy culture wrapped in the "strong" woman image and the tough bullygirl packaging. In the image of Sarah Palin we finda a combination of beauty pageant drama and WWF violence-made-sexy plunked smack dab in the middle of our political discourse. I don't know many women who see her in the glowing terms they describe her. She is the fantasy creation of the ideal female made by a certain type of man--Rambette. As long as she can pull a trigger and a punch, wisecrack and tough talk like a man, while looking good in her clothes, she is imbued with some sort of mystical strength. Most women aren't like this. Most of the women I know as strong have bear much with dignity and are able to hold the lives of many in their circle together with dignity and intelligence. I'm probably gumming this all up, but it occurred to me that she stands at the nexxus of the worst of female and male cultures within this society. Not a role model I want for my daughters--or my sons either.

29. Objectively, she ain't hot
She's a reasonably physically attractive 44 year old woman. Certainly better looking than John McCain. But as a heterosexual man, I certainly think Obama is a better looking man than Palin is a woman.

32. well i am a woman, so anything i say regarding whether i thought she was 'hot'
would be seen through the lens of a bitter woman, i suppose. but then again, my view of beauty and such has more to do with a person's intelligence level and ability to speak. There were many guys i thought were good looking, and then they would open their mouths and show the ugliness inside.

47. I don't get that "hot" talking point either. She's quite ordinary looking. Besides, I'd think r/o
pushing the "she's hot" talking point would be a huge turn off to the vast majority of female (and male!) voters, since she seems to be totally lacking in qualifications for the job.

She looks 100% drop dead ordinary to me. Like, excruciatingly ordinary to the point of being a walking stereotype of "totally non-descript."

If I passed her on the street I wouldn't notice her for a split second. There is nothing at all unique about her. She's average in every sense of the word.

8. What's sad is that she's basically the gimmick candidate that never gets votes on her own
but because a mainstream candidate plunked her down on a major ticket, now she's suddenly such a serious choice. Please, remember the infamous recall election in California that ended up in Aaaaahnold's ultimate victory? They had all these completely out of left field candidates submitting gubernatorial bids. I think Gary Coleman, a porn star and Alfred E. Neumann were amongst some of the candidates. Palin reads like one of those kinds of candidates that wouldn't be viable by herself-- a lot less viable than the third party candidates but because she's now the Republican VP candidate, the reality of her incompetence needs to be spun into the un-reality of her "experience".

58. You know what? I shouldn't have to apologize for that...
but i feel like i should because some have intimated it's an attack on her family and family is out of bounds. That you can't control what other people do blah blah.

But having been raised in a conservative home (socially, not politically) and having even more conservative extended family - there are some things that I would never ever ever let my parents see happen with me. Illegitimate pregnancy is one of them. It's a respect thing. But then again, I also have far more sex education than abstinence only. However even when my current bf tells me about his exes from high scool(he's from Fundyland) those girls took their abstinenece pretty seriously.

My other top reason for hating her is that whole bit about banning books. Even if you've enver banned a book in your life - if you beleive that there might one day be a reason you have to, you and I won't ever get along.

10. She's a walking Porno. That executive figure that comes home,
throws the brief case in the corner, un-pins her hair and shakes her head loose from its "up-do", and begins unbuttoning her suit only to reveal a skimply little teddy outfit that she's been wearing all day long... She's a walking Porno. Men are undressing her. They are not listening to her. She doesn't have to say anything. She only has to walk around with the old man and protray this image of a walking Porno. Its the reason she was picked over any of the other Republican women they could have gone with. She's attracting men who would like to go out have a beer with her and then take her home and have wild sex with her.

For one, I don't think she's all that attractive, of course, standing next to macsame can anyone look young and vibrant.

secondly, the minute she opens her mouth and says something, with that wheedly fingernails on the blackboard nasal flatline voice, all bets are off.

keep in mind the same guys who think she's "hot" think Laura Bush is a MILF.

She has rubbed me the wrong way on some visceral level since I first saw her picture. That overly bright, overly ambitious smile combined with a total lack of introspection struck a nerve in me from the beginning. She is a living, breathing caricature. I don't know this woman because this woman doesn't exist. Except in the minds of her creators, of whom I am afraid she is one. I think it is that self-invented mock up of a 'real Alaska woman' that makes me cringe.

Every time I hear someone say, "She is so REAL.", I want to scream.

of their looks, not brains. She was the one who always complained about affirmative action, turning the policy into a race-specific one while failing to acknowledge that her grades sucked, and that perhaps it was *she* who benefitted from affirmative action policies. She reminded me that I have to be three times as good or better, because her qualifications were better than mine, even though she has a minor in political science and I have a doctorate in political science. That's what she reminds me of. The conservative women who always got over who want to force their opinions on others.

It shows how STUPID he thinks women in general are, and believes that we blind, stoopid women will flock to vote for Palin because she has a vagina. WRONG!

is that she has to be coached to even sit for an interview. Obviously, candidate need to be briefed, but you would hope that a potential president of the US wouldn't need to be coached -- like a not-to-bright kid taking his college boards.

Ready to lead on Day One? She isn't even ready to answer basic questions about what she believes from Day One. She has been intensively coached for two weeks now and she couldn't even answer the softball questions thrown at her in the carefully controlled interview.

She has no knowledge of history, no knowledge of international affairs, no knowledge of how the US government works, no knowledge of the most important developments of the last few years within her own party.

For heaven's sake -- she is a total fraud. She is absolutely dangerous. She will have immense power as president and there are grade-school children in Europe who know more than she does.

Women as caricatures of men's fantasies is a subtext that (real)women have had to navigate and choke down forever.

But I also am angry as hell at women(Palin) who disparage the very women (true feminists) who battled and sacrificed so much for us to have the right to vote, have control over our bodies and lives, and have decreased the amount of disparity between men & women--to take those advantage of all of that hard work and make a mockery of it by claiming to stand as a representative of women. BULLSHIT.

41. Queen Bee.
That's what's at the heart of anti-feminism in certain women. Think of women like Phyllis Schlafly, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Camille Paglia etc. Each of them enjoys a lucrative and semi-powerful place atop her own little perch. They benefit from the advances of feminism in their own lives but oppose feminism in general because they can't stand the competition from other women. And Palin strikes me as a petty insecure bully. Firing the librarian in Wasilla and using her position to go after her brother in law make that clear to me.

you will see two things. A Karl Rove move in choosing her. And people she was chosen for.

That last one has me more worried than anything. That last one is why COPS lasted more than one episode. Why Baywatch didn't have he same fate. Why there was no revolt when the so-called war on drugs happened.

The pot of lobsters has slowly warmed up. I don't know how, but I see the results. I feel that I do know how. But if I start spouting particulars it comes across like a raving redneck republican. Even I can't take the sound of my own voice when I start talking about how we got here. But there is one thing that's glaringly obvious. We're too comfortable. That sums it up right there.

Everyone is an armchair genius. No one can make their own soap. So we gaze outward upon a real world, and push our buttons. Feed me.

Edit- I will say something else that has contributed to those who have consciously made Amerrica this way. Immigrants often show up here scared. My grandmother had a marble 3 story palace on a hill. I finally saw the first picture of it a week ago. Beyond my father, there is no history. I know nothing. Never met my grandfather. These people were the lucky ones. They were given a hint. And by night, they left the country. They showed up here to be migrant workers. Scared. Broke. This is how many new Americans are formed. And fear has done the republicans very very well.

So Palin fits the image.

51. Very well put....
Many Americans seem unable to tell a caricature when they see it. They love simplicity, and suspect complexity, so caricatures comfort them. Is it because of too much TV, where a little tough talk and a few wisecracks solve all problems? I dunno, but it's scary.

53. To me, she's like the worst aspects of American society wrapped up in one package.
Violent, ignorant, arrogant, insular, greedy, lying, animal-abusing, superficial, uncaring, etc.

54. You have nailed it.
I agree totally with most of the comments expressed in this thread.

She is the epitome of every rotten aspect of contemporary American culture rolled into one person.

She's a caricature. A walking (and sadly) talking bad pun.

The only thing I might be able to contribute that you didn't touch on is the complete lack of worthiness.

While people like Senators Clinton and Obama were dedicating themselves to improving the lives of their fellow citizens and WORKING to make things happen, Gov. Palin was reading sports scores and eating mooseburgers.

She just hasn't earned a governorship, much less a presidency.

--and got the promotion that a number of older and more competent women were passed over for. And boss man improves his affirmative action streed cred as well.

68. My mom has said for many years
I'm a Man's Woman. And that there's nothing wrong with that. :-)

Why she irritates me? At a gut-level catty instinct? Woman to woman? She's left her feminity off the table in order to play with the 'Big Smart Men'. There is nothing soft or gentle about that woman.

I compare/contrast her to Nancy Pelosi. Now I know a lot of Democrats dislike her. But as a woman who is thrilled that she's the first female SOH . . . and who thinks the world of her beliefs and record of progressive/liberal values -

I can also 'look' at Nancy Pelosi the woman and see a wife, mother, grandmother - who just happens to be a tough cookie to boot! :-) Her 68 years or so on this planet have given us a woman with a huge heart - but who can harden it when necessary.

Whereas Palin's 44 years have given us a hard hearted hannah who throws on make up, does her updo, and does/says things to get the big bad boys in her back pocket.

I don't think Nancy Pelosi gives a dayum if the 'big bad boys' are in her back pocket. She's just who she is be it good, bad, or indifferent. Take her or leave her. Not this "Please like me. Please like me. I hunt. I'm a barracuda. Like me because I'm mean."
