Biden prepares for more prominent role in campaign

By NEDRA PICKLER – 1 hour ago

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — The vice presidential nominee you aren't hearing so much about, Democrat Joe Biden, is planning a more prominent role to help validate Barack Obama among white working-class voters and criticize the Republican rival he's long called a friend.

Republican running mate Sarah Palin is soaking up the campaign spotlight with magazine covers and joint rallies with John McCain that draw thousands, while Biden has had a more traditional role of second fiddle to the man at the top of the ticket. But the campaign envisions a new role for its No. 2 in helping make the closing argument against McCain.

Biden privately told reporters traveling with him last week that Palin was a smart political choice who has changed the race but is not prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The Associated Press is not among Biden's traveling press, but the off-the-record comment Tuesday was described by two people who were there and confirmed by a senior campaign official.

Biden's focus will be on McCain, not Palin, campaign officials say. They are calculating that the election will be determined on voters' feelings about Obama and McCain. Biden is in a unique position to help convince voters that McCain is the wrong choice, they say, because of a relationship that goes back even beyond their 22 years of working together in the Senate.

In the late 1970s, when Biden was a young senator and McCain was the Senate naval liaison, the two traveled the world on Foreign Relations Committee fact-finding trips. They became friends, as did their families.

1. Note to Joe: Stop praising McCain so much - quit reinforcing his brand for him.
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 02:16 PM by ClarkUSA
Just lay out the argument against him. I noticed that Obama didn't pause to praise McCain prior to slamming him today in
Manchester, NH. That's the way it ought to be.

2. Great News! It should be no problem for
Biden to criticize "his friend", john mccain now that he's such a fucking liar.

22. The Friend Card
Agree!
Maybe Biden needs to start playing the Friend Card...c'mon, Joe, McCain ain't your friend. He's shameless and will do ANYthing to get the Presidency. And I do mean anything. So, Joe, call him out. He's lying. He's a liar.

4. It think he's curtailed that somewhat.
Just a nice statement - not much more than Obama usually throws out, then on to the policies.

21. Palin build up
I think the build up that I've read, like Biden saying something to the effect of "she's a savvy politician" and other "nice" words is they were counting on her lack of experience and knowledge in comparison to Biden - which should be obvious at the VP debate.

Of course, unfortunately, there's always the 30% or so that will say she knows more than Biden. Since she's so close to Russia, hunts, blah blah blah.

because the things that I've been hearing him say aren't very helpful.
As said above, I hope he's going to stop praising his opponents. This isn't a sporting event.

16. Well then go support the other ticket, because that is Biden's trademark style.
Did you not see him rip apart Hillary in a debate last year about her attempt to pass UHC?

Hillary didn't know what hit her.

Biden is a smooth as silk - and he usually starts his attack with "He is my friend - BUT ----- slam!!"

He doesn't go after the person, he goes after their policies -or- throws their words back in their face..like - a noun, a verb, and 9/11 - or McCain's healthcare plan is on a bridge to nowhere.

That's Biden, and that's what makes him great.

He has no problem going after McCain regardless of their friendship. Biden knows that the Dems need to win big this November.

17. Perhaps
But as I'm sure you're aware, the "but" doesn't usually get as much press.

19. You got a point there, We'll have to wait and see.
The main point is they have got to start getting the press to cover him again instead of that thing from Alaska.

Hopefully the Obama team will figure it out because the last two weeks have been nauseating.

Biden is the perfect person to deliver the Marc Antony speech; McCain is an "honorable man". Let's hope he does it.

First praise him, then tear him apart for his lies and distortions, then for the policies that are taking America in the wrong direction.
