E&P: 'Values' Crowd Gobbles Up Obama as Aunt Jemima

Oh, leave it to those "Values Voters." Many of the two thousand attendees at the conservative political forum Value Voters Summit on Saturday were "snapping up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap," the AP reports.

Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., created the mix and are selling it for $10 a box from a booth at the Summit in Washington, D.C. -- which is sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council. Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are among speakers at the forum.

The packaging "plays off the image of the classic pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype," AP relates. "Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly. Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian." On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero."

5. Oh hush! Someone needs to buy these and show them in the west and north.
They will mobilize anti-McCain voters like crazy in states where racial politics plays against the Republicans. All of this Southern Strategy bullshit is going to backfire on the Republicans. There are a bunch of Republican women who will be ashamed to vote for a candidate who has crap like this associated with his campaign.

20. Here's a list, with pics, of the confirmed speakers at this event
You will recognize a number of the names, lots of the usual suspects. There are actually a few African-Americans included, most of whom are clergy. There are some elected officials, some members of the media (liberal media , my ass). I apologize for linking to one of that group's pages, but I thought it was worth it so DUers can see who's who in radical fundieland.

33. Maybe you're not in a position to know what's racist
Or maybe you're just not aware of how offensive the symbol of Aunt Jemima has been in the past. Here are some pancake ads from the 1940s. It's hard to believe today that such racist marketing could have existed:

34. Stupid and idiotic. . .
But what else can one expect from the people who so effectively used "Willie Horton" as a bugaboo.

They only do this because they are unwilling and unable to discuss the issues. A dumb stereotype will do
to influence "particular" people, and we all know who those people are. . .
