McCain's Absentee Ballot Mailer Fiasco Spreads - Could Disqualify Some Voters

McCain's Absentee Ballot Mailer Fiasco Spreads - Could Disqualify Some Voters

Reports from around the country advise that John McCain's campaign has sent confusing or incorrect absentee ballot request forms to voters in ten states at least. Affected so far are Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon (reported by blogger, not confirmed) Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

In each state, the mailers have a different error, in any of these cases, the voter could be disenfranchised by the error. In at least one state a voter could disqualify themselves or be vulnerable to election challenges if they mailed these forms in. Mailers sent to Wisconsin voters are encouraging voters to send their applications to clerks in communities where they do not live. If you receive an absentee ballot request form from the McCain campaign ( or any private entity) and you do want to vote absentee, then instead check with your County Board of Elections to get the correct information.

2. So this is their trick. This should be on national TV repeated over and over
Vehicles with speakers on the roofs should be going through neighborhoods announcing this.. but no it's probably going to remain a little blip in the internets.

4. Were these sent to anyone/everyone? Or just targets like Registered Dems? Registered Repubs?
Was this an error, or deliberate, or just stupid?

Guess that depends on who the 'targets'were.
Anyone know?

Were they sent to Democrats only?

13. In Wisconsin, Democrats received absentee ballot applications...
...with the wrong addresses, from the McCain campaign.

Some Democrats may stay home on Election Day thinking that they can't vote since they applied for an absentee ballot which never arrived.

6. Why don't the respective SOSs declare that anyone who is
disqualified as a result of responding to one of these fraudulent mailers be reinstated? What do the election folks do with these mailers when they get them - are they destroyed? I swear, shit like this drives me crazy. Someone should sue the shit out of the McCain campaign for this deliberate election fraud perpetrated upon unknowing voters.

7. They've screwed themselves
Campaigns don't send out absentee applications to just anyone- they send them to voters they have identified as their own supporters.

Karma, baby, karma. They may have disenfranchised thousands of voters on their own side.

How would he get his hands on that specific list? I 'm sorry if I'm dumb on this issue - but is that specific information available to anyone to view? I know campaign dollars have to be reported but specific donors and their addresses also?

it seems they are sending to both Repubs + Dems and not ALL applications have mistakes... but all complaints seem to be coming from Obama supporters.

Shouldn't they be heavily penalized for disenfranchising these voters, even if it wasn't intentional (though I highly suspect it was).

39. They should be struck from the ballot in those states
That would be the entirely appropriate punishment. If they don't truly respect people's right to vote, why should they have the right to receive votes?

23. Why has no one
contacted any sort of district attorney or even US attorney, since this appears to be federal in nature, yet? This isn't just sleaze - this is a crime - directly against the Constitution. Someone who's received this and is pissed needs to get a meeting with a prosecutor. Wanna see some serious dominoes fall on that campaign? Start the prosecutorial process and watch the lemmings who were charged with this treason start to sing. This is the most despicable act yet from McCrap.

This needs to be presented with flames around it to get the public's attention. Nobody likes cheating, and they definitely don't like the other guy cheating. ;) That's a consensus that could drive a movement toward clean elections.

This needs to see some sunlight.

36. UPDATE: Mailer Directs Voters To Return Absentee Ballot To Wrong Address
State Republican Mailer Under Fire As Unfair Confusion Tactic
Mailer Directs Voters To Return Absentee Ballot To Wrong Address

September 15, 2008 UPDATED: 9:49 pm CDT September 15, 2008

MADISON, Wis. -- Absentee ballot mailers are under fire from Democrats.

Democrats believe a mistake by the Republican Party could be an effort to mislead or even disenfranchise voters.

More than a 100,000 mailers from the John McCain campaign were sent out with an application for an absentee ballot.

The problem is that the mailers were sent to a particular address, but if the voters returned the application it was addressed to another city.

The state Republican Party called it an honest mistake.

38. Honest mistake my ASS!

any body notice it's almost all swing states? Different mistakes in different states?! Come on, they went to the trouble of printing DIFFERENT mistakes? Ya know, a person might buy the idea of a typo if they were all the same mistake ... but this? No other explanation but deliberate.

I say we make enough noise they HAVE to report this loud and long. Blogs, calls, LTTEs, let's make sure we're asking the campaign also. NOT THIS TIME ... we can't lay down!
