Richmond Mayor and former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder said yesterday that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lacks the expertise to be vice president of the United States.

"God help us," Wilder said at a news conference called by Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign. "If that is the cream of the crop, God save the milk."

The Illinois senator's campaign called the news conference to criticize GOP presidential nominee John McCain for a series of television advertisements that Obama says is distorting his record.

Asked about the Palin candidacy, Wilder said: "To the extent that he's chosen her, he is totally entitled to that. No one should criticize him for choosing her, whether she's experienced or not. My concern is, who are going to be the next people that you choose, if you're going to use that level to determine expertise."
