Why does no one compare Kerry to Joshua Chamberlain?
The similarities are almost endless.

5. Another sad truth of present-day America
America has lost her heroes. Just in time for Bush to work to undo what they worked so hard to achieve.

6. I know who he is and I agree its a sad truth
I only know who he is through being a history nerd. So how exactly is Kerry like Chamberlain? both are heroes in my eyes.

2. J.L. Chamberlain was a hero in a decisive battle. John Kerry was a hero
in a few skirmishes. Are you refering to Chamberlain's public service?

7. Chamberlain was a hero in more than one battle!
Gettysburg, I am geussing is what you are reffering to, but that was one of many heroics.

8. also the man who accepted the surrender of Lee's men at Attapatox right?
Something like that, I saw on April 1865 how he did it, with such honor. That man was a hero, one of those who should be talked more about, we need to discuss heroes like Chamberlain in school so people can realize just how important history really is.

11. Absolutely!
At the specific request of General Grant.

And was promoted from junior officer to Maj General at the time of Lee's surrender.

12. I thought so
Couldn't have selected a better man for the job, he was a great guy, an abolitionist, I know a lot of what I know about him from Jeff Daniels' portyral of him, its funny, Daniels in a way is forever in my mind as Harry from Dumb and Dumber but he as Joshua Chamberlain has shown me what a true hero is like.

14. Jeff Daniels did us all a favor
He was great as Chamberlain. I wish there was a film just about him. He is really worth learning about, IMHO.

17. Neat story on the surrender
I canot do it the justice here that he did in his book The passing of the Armies, but the story goes something like this.

The 5th Corp was lined up, awaiting the arrival of the Confederate soldiers. The were to come forwad and yield their flags, and stack their arms. As the dejected Southerers approached, Chamberlain called for an "order arms" which is a marching salute.

Despite the complete animosity the soldiers felt for one another just days before, this salute welcomed them back into the arms of the Union, and provided the first post-fighting healing.

18. yeah Ive heard the salute story
The generals of the civil war, Lee, Grant, Joe Johnston, Sherman really helped with the reconcilation, Lincoln helped out too but Jeff Davis was a stubborn sob right to the end.

9. A few similarities
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 06:00 AM by sampsonblk
Chamberlain volunteered for the war, even though he was not a great fan of fighting and killing other men. He constantly reflected on it, with great reservations, both during and after his service.

Both unlikely heroes - Chamberlain was not a career military man, and had not been in the Army long when he was called upon to show his greatness. Kerry (the so-called flip-flopper) was forced to be decisive also - when Rassman fell into the water, there was no time to be for it and against it. Kerry showed his mettle immediately, as did Chamberlain.

Both from the northeast. Both with a lot of liberal convictions.

Edit = typo

3. Who now heh kidding
Really how is he like Chamberlain, and he's a hero like Chamberlain who got in to politics in New England, thats a simliarity. Brave and honorable man he was. One of those heroes who the kids should learn about in school but you have to read beyond the textbook to learn about.

13. Scholar, humble, northeastern liberal (except prohibition)
Unlikely war hero who volunteered to fight, even though he was opposed to killing, because he thought it was the right thing to do.

4. I am a big JLC fan, but I don;t see the immediate connections
can you please delve deeper -- JLC did a lot of things -- Scholar, Professor, Warrior, Governor, Developer, etc.

While I see comparisons, I am missing the specifics.
