The Reaganites feared an "October Surprise" in the form of a hostage release deal I negotiate with Tehran to hang onto the hostages until after the election. The hostages were released immediately as Reagan took office, and the shipping of weapons to Iran (the "Iran" part of "Iran-Contra") was part of the payback deal.

1968. Nixon feared that the US would ink a peace deal with the NLF and N Vietnam in October, in time to throw the election to Humphrey.

So what did Nixon do? He used notorious anti-Communist Claire Chennault to convince S Vietnam's President Thieu not to make peace then, with the idea that Thieu would get better terms from a Nixon administation.

In other words, Nixon committed TREASON. (It is against the law for private citizens to interfere with the official conduct of US foreign policy.)

Nixon's TREASON contributed to the deaths of another 30,000 US soldiers from 1969-74 and untold numbers of SE Asians.

5. I don't dispute Nixon's actions--he did that--but
I don't recall the "October Surprise" term getting any public currency then.

6. You may well be correct on when the phrase

entered the popular lexicon. In fact, few Americans were aware of the Reagan campaign's shenanigans (hncluding TREASON committed by, among others, Bill Casey and possibly even HW) until the late 80s.

What is now clear, though, is that Nixon and his henchmen were scared shitless at the possibility of an "October Surprise" out of the Paris peace talks, so much so that they committed TREASON to prevent it. LBJ had them dead to rights too, caught on FBI wiretaps of international phone calls.

LBJ did not use the fruits of the wiretaps to have the TRAITOR Nixon exposed as the pond scum he was. In a way, this was LBJ's final act of betrayal . . . to Humphrey, to the American soldiers, and to the American people. I can never forgiue LBJ for his final betrayal.
