Remember how the Soviet Union collapsed?

We forced them to spend themselves into oblivion on defense, and eventually their whole system collapsed.

I think al Queda learned that lesson well.

They did the same thing to us. Goaded us into spending ourselves into oblivion to fight them "over there".

Now our system is collapsing.

Have the terrorists won?

2. That's a good point
There was a lesson to be learned in what happened with the Soviet Union and it's not impossible it could happen here.

4. Al Qaeda
actually helped us out with the whole Soviet collapse thingy.

Rent Charlie Wilson's War. Worth the rental just for Julia Roberts getting out of that pool/hot tub.

But no, the terrorists have not won.

We are going through a credit contraction that is going to be painful. But we will be the healthier for it.

6. The USSR collapsed for one reason:
Mikhail Gorbachev saw that the entire Cold War was a fool's game and stopped playing. Reagan/Bush I happened to be standing around at the time and took the credit they did not deserve.

The U.S. wouldn't be stretched quite so thin, but we definitely did this to ourselves.

8. I understand your analagy, and I do see a similarity, BUT.....
I don't blame the terrorists! THEY didn't force us to do ANYTHING! I look to the idiot who said I want to privatize everything and then shrink the gov't economy small enough to drown it in a bathtub. It looks to me like they've nearly succeeded! The bathtub is full of water, and........

13. Yes, kind of like ours
for the last 8 years for sure. That would be much closer to any comparison about both countries collapsing.

11. Russia is doing it again
Behind the Russian Stock Market Meltdown

A series of shocks, including fears of a new Cold War, caused share prices to fall even before this week's turmoil. Foreign investors may not return soon
by Jason Bush

Is history repeating itself? That's surely a question many Russians must be asking themselves. Almost exactly 10 years after the financial crash of 1998, Russian markets are once again in turmoil. On Sept. 16, Moscow's largest stock exchange, MICEX, fell by a jaw-dropping 17.5%, the largest one-day loss in a decade, while the rival RTS exchange was down by 11.5%.

The free fall continued on Sept. 17, causing Russia's stock market regulator to suspend trading on both exchanges. The Russian central bank pumped a record $14.1 billion into the financial system, while the Finance Ministry said it would provide $44.9 billion in short-term loans to the country's biggest banks.

Compared with the gyrations in Moscow, the 5% declines in other global markets look pretty mild. What's more, the collapse in Russia is not simply a knee-jerk response to bad news elsewhere. Well before this week's chaos on Wall Street, the Russian stock market was imploding. Since the beginning of July, the RTS has lost 64% of its value, equivalent to some three-quarters of a trillion dollars.

12. That was their goal to bankrupt us and keep us in fear
Mission accomplished by the republicans, who still can't, or don't want to see it.

I pray this isn't the tip of the iceburg with our economy. I think we'll know soon.

14. Maybe this is our last, best chance to finally starve the beast?
We can do it with European and Asian cooperation and Obama in the lead.

Perhaps we should think of this not as doom and gloom, but as an opportunity for revolutionary World change?

20. I think the breakup of the British Empire is a better comparison.
And the seeds of the current financial crisis were sown with the wave of deregulation in the 1990's (most specifically, the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which paved the way for the mortgage crisis by allowing commercial banks to package mortage loans as securities and offer them for trade; under the provisions of Glass-Steagall commercial banks were forbidden from offering investment instruments like bonds, etc).
