BREAKING: Obama leads McCain, 47% to 44% in Indiana poll
Star/WTHR poll: It's close in Indiana

Poll finds Obama has a fragile edge on McCain, 47% to 44%

By Bill Ruthhart and Tim Evans

Sen. Barack Obama holds a tenuous lead over Sen. John McCain in Indiana, with one in four likely voters saying they could change their mind on who to support for president, according to a new Indianapolis Star-WTHR (Channel 13) poll.

Obama's three-point lead in the poll, 47 percent to 44 percent, reinforces Indiana's status as a battleground in the race for the White House.

The poll, conducted Sunday through Tuesday by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, also revealed a geographic disparity between the two candidates: Obama, the Democrat, holds a 54 percent to 40 percent advantage in Indianapolis, but McCain, the Republican, leads in all other regions of the state, including Northwest Indiana.

Pollster J. Ann Selzer said the poll, with a 4 percentage point margin of error, reflects a lead by Obama that is tentative and reliant on a solid turnout in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

Obama's advantage, the poll found, easily could be erased. That's because one in four likely voters are still up for grabs: Six percent are undecided, and almost 20 percent of voters who say they prefer Obama or McCain say they could be persuaded to vote for someone else.

25. Here is what a Republican woman told the pollster
Beth Kinder, 39, Monticello, said she prefers Biden over Palin, calling McCain's choice a "political ploy."

"The fact that she's a woman and I'm a woman, so I should support her, I don't buy into that," Kinder said of Palin. "That is the wrong reason to vote for someone."

Kinder, a Republican, said she's voting for Obama because she believes he is best suited to address issues most important to her: high gas prices, jobs and the economy.

"He comes with a lot of energy," she said. "I see great things coming from him."

Even if Obama does not ultimately prevail there, this will force McCain to spend $$$ there.

18. It's the economy. stupid!
Indiana's economy has been ravaged, and there is a lot of Bush fatigue and McCain is seen as Bush 44.

BTW, people from Indiana are called Hoosiers.

32. Sorry, Hoosiers are feelin' it so bad but
the silver lining is we might be able to get the country the help it needs.

Obama has an ad he's played in PA for the Economy and someone suggested it be aired in Ohio and now we can add Indiana to that growing list.

20. Long before the bad news out of Wall Street these past few days,
many Indiana towns were smacked hard and early by economic downturn.

Anderson, Muncie, Kokomo, etc. Very depressed markets for business, just for starters. These folks have had it real bad and have seen no relief for the 8 years under Bush. It could be that many of them are willing to invest in some hope of change, which Obama embodies and not McCain.

I am so glad that the race in Indiana is so close. The state I go to school in, Tennessee, is not close, so I am glad to vote in a state where my vote will make a difference. I can't wait to go home from fall break and cast an early absentee ballot in Indianapolis.

34. Hoosier Born and Raised...escaped but...
My brother and I have been working very hard on our parents. As it stands right now, dad is a tepid supporter of Obama, mom says that she may vote for him, but, will NOT vote for McCain. She says if she does vote for Obama, she will tell everyone she voted for McCain. LOL I told her that her secret would be safe with me if she does.

Anyway, I've been wondering about Indiana and what Obama's internals have been telling him, because, he's been spending quite a bit of time and money there. Why would he bother in such a red state if it wasn't plausible that it could go Blue?

I bet McCan't is pissed because now he'll actually have to put some money into Indiana. My guess is the main issue is the economy. I know a lot of Hoosiers feel like they were conned by the republicans, and Hoosiers don't take too kindly to con-men.
