Sarah and Todd Palin's public stories about when they "told the kids" don't seem to match up
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 11:31 PM by ruggerson
Ok, so I took one for the team and watched Greta Van Susteren's sycophantic interview with Todd Palin. And then tonight I watched Hannity's even worse interview with Sarah Palin.

Greta asked Todd when he and the kids found out about McCain choosing their mom. He said it wasn't until they actually landed in Ohio for her introduction rally. He claimed he got them on the plane in Alaska by telling them they were going on a special, surprise trip to celebrate the Palin's wedding anniversary. Greta repeatedly asked him about this and he was quite clear: the children didn't really know she had been chosen until they were on the plane and didn't officially know until they landed in Ohio - mere hours before Palin's introduction.

On Hannity tonight, he asked her roughly the same question. How did you find out and what was the family's reaction? She tells a different story. She says McCain called her a "couple of days" before the country found out. Ok, that matches up with Todd so far. But then she said, the first thing she did was ask the girls what do they think, and they voted go for it. She reiterates: she wasn't too concerned about her kid Track, because he was going off to do his own "thing" in Iraq, but she clearly says she got the girl's opinion after McCain asked her, as she wanted their go ahead.

The two stories don't match. Either they kept this a secret from their kids, as Todd Palin claims, or they told their daughters right after McCain popped the question, as Sarah Palin maintains.

I realize this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It's a small lie. And an unnecessary lie. I mean, who gives a shit about when they told their kids, except for People Magazine, right?

But, it's the small lies that are often the most telling. These are not remotely truthful people. They are lying, in your face, bullying, fundamentalist, power hungry assholes. The alarming thing is she is actually attempting to masquerade as an honest reformer.

It will be interesting to see if the media picks up on this little discrepancy. It's yet another very small window into the character of this couple.

1. I'd heard the "Ohio surprise" fake-anniversary story before, so Todd must
have been sticking to the script, where his wifeski decided to freestyle it. Ooops. Someone's a-lying.

8. I believe his version
It's her version that's a newer cleaned up version and the first I've heard that there was ANY discussion with the family beforehand.

It IS a big deal. I've been beating this drum for a couple of weeks now and it and although it falls mainly on deaf ears here at DU - people that I actually SPEAK to, face to face - who are not as heavily into the election or politics become OUTRAGED at her inconsideration of her family.

That she didn't let them know she was expecting a new baby - a special needs baby at that - till she was seven months pregnant?!?! That she didn't prepare them? Let them participate?

That she pulled the same kind of shit on them by accepting the nomination and shoving them under an international microscope without checking first that they were up for that? Especially the 17 year old who's pregnant!?!?

I'm telling you - people can't stand her for that. And her new lie shows that the campaign has picked up on that factor.

11. I agree
I think they kept it from the kids - Todd Palin was very detailed about the lengths he went to keep it secret.

I think her new version is utter bullshit. Let's hope someone picks up on it.

18. God, I hope so!
With her suddenly telling a different version of the story I hope the MSM will bring it up. All I've heard or read about springing it on the kids when they arrived in Ohio was only mentioned as an "aside" - a kinda cute "they can keep a secret" SURPRISE human interest angle. The real story, is that she DIDN'T include them!

It shows as much as anything else what kind of a person she is. When people hear about it they develop an instant distaste for her.

17. That's the story I'd heard, too.
I heard that way back when she was first selected, and I remember being disgusted then.

what you should say...it is always the same..

3. I think she's a recreational liar
No need to lie on these small things, she does it for fun. It also shows her contempt for her audience, because the lies are so transparent that she must know no one believes them, and she doesn't care. Cheneyesque.

... breaks my little pea pickin' heart to admit it. :D

Tomorrow we will find out that she doesn't even use the tanning bed to fight her depression ....... just bought it to hang laundry on.

6. Her story also conflicts with what she told Charlie Gibson last week
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 11:31 PM by EffieBlack
PALIN: I didn't hesitate, no.

GIBSON: Didn't that take some hubris?

PALIN: I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink.

So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

So, which is it, Sarah? Did you not even hesitate, not even blink when he asked you? Or did you take the time to poll your children and get their buy-in? Or did you ask their opinion just to let them think you gave a damn, knowing that it didn't really matter what they thought because you had already made up your mind without hesitating or blinking?

15. She didn't think of her family
She apparently only thinks of herself and her own ambitions. Her new version is a lie - calculated to make her look less insensitive.

I doubt she even knew that, as a human being, you're supposed to discuss big decisions with the people that are going to be effected by them - especially the people that you supposedly love! Someone's put a bug in her ear, finally, that her folksy "no blink" story isn't playing too well with the "folks".

there isn't any reason to, it's effortless and habitual.

She is a sociopath.

9. I was about to post an OP entitled "Where the hell is ruggerson"?

Glad to see you back.

When we last saw you, you thought the Obama campaign was floundering and off-message (last week).

Feel better now?

13. What I said was
that they needed one attack soundbyte per day that would make it to the nightly news. The last few days have been much better. The McCain/Hoover ad is the best of the campaign so far, imho.

I watched the Hannity/Palin psudoporno tonight with a few friends.

I specifically said, "I thought the kids didn't know until they hit the tarmac in Ohio..."

22. Doesn't match the AP story from August either. She's such a LIAR.
It's downright compulsive. She even LIES when the truth would do just fine. It's weird.

Rather than risking being seen coming to McCain's hotel, the Palins and McCain's aides continued to the nearby Manchester Inn and Conference Center, where they checked in under another name. It was then that Palin's children, who had been told they were going to Ohio to celebrate their parents' wedding anniversary, also on Friday, were told for the first time that their mother would be a nominee for the vice presidency.

I realize this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It's a small lie. And an unnecessary lie. I mean, who gives a shit about when they told their kids, except for People Magazine, right?

It's HUGE and it affects the way people feel about her as a person. BIG, BIG, BIG DEAL!

I wrote a very lengthy post about this a few days ago and can't find it now. Trust me - average non-policy wonk people - especially mothers turn on her INSTANTLY when they find out about her hiding her pregnancy from her kids, flying after her water broke, and not discussing her VP plans with them before flying them to Ohio.

We can talk about the supreme court, roe v wade, earmarks, creationism, war, hell we can even talk about rape kits and shooting wolves from the air - sadly it's all just "blah, blah, blah" or "bullshit" to most people. This is what skeeves non-wonkish, non-issue voters - the way she treats her family.

27. I think she STOLE the story from Jill Biden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was listening to Jill Biden's speech on September 13th in Dubuque, Iowa. When she told the story of how their family voted on whether Joe should run with Sen. Obama or not, I thought it was such an awesome way to make that decision. So unlike, what I had heard about Palin's "shock and awe" method with her children. It made me respect the Biden family so much more.

If you want to hear the story go here and start around 3:05
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwjYMFrJXfc

So when I heard Palin's new story...I immediately thought..."Hey I've heard that before!"
Perhaps Palin heard the same speech and decided she liked that better. I wouldn't put it past her at all.

Wouldn't it be lovely (and ironic) if PLAGERISM of a Biden speech was one of the final stones to sink Palin.

she either cared enough about her family's privacy rights to at least talk it over with them BEFORE excepting McStupid's offer, or she didn't. I believe she didn't, and I find that level of narcissism shocking.
