I just got back from visiting my doctor, who told me that the patient before me - a very wealthy and
very staunch Republican - was saying how crucial it is for Obama to be defeated in November.

As the reasons for his believing this, he regurgitated every freeze-dried Republican talking point that's already been debunked
a hundred times or more. And at the end of his ignorant diatribe, he leaned closer to the doctor and stage-whispered:
"There's no way we can let *that guy* sleep in the Lincoln bedroom!"

My doctor said that when he left the examining room, he went directly to his desk and (for the first time in his life) made a political contribution,
writing out a check for $1000.00.

To Barack Obama.

15. There were far worse things that the Repug guy said that actually made me queasy, but I can't/won't
repeat them here.

And one of my doctor's sons just returned to Iraq/Afghanistan on his 3rd rotation (he volunteered), telling his dad that this time
he won't be able to be in touch or have any contact with him for at least 3 months.

That was one month ago; two left to go.

As far as the Repug patient, the doc should just refuse to treat him for the debilitating case of acid reflux he's going to get from having to say 'President Obama' for the next eight years.

4. Hey, if Obama became Preisdent Lincoln's ghost would go away.
And his soul would be at rest. I'd sure like to wake up John Wilkes Booth from his grave when Obama becomes President. Ole John W. Booth hated Lincoln for "freeing" the slaves. Futhermore, I'd like to see Obama's little girls, and Joe's little girl all jumping up and down on Lincoln's bed.

Man... at least it prompted him to donate to Obama. It just sucks that you see people like that guy. That quote really is illuminating on the type of people that we need to make extinct in this country by simply enlightening more and more people and having the next generation lead us into the future with Obama instead of staying in the past with McCain.

My wife turned me on to him in '97, she has been seeing him since the early '80's.

If you live in the Aston-Media area of PA. shoot me a PM and I'll give you his name.

Doesn't rush me out, LISTENS to me, and is a progressive.

a fantastic human being, and his patients would do anything in the world for him.

The woman who's his receptionist used to run a large company. She was retired when she became very ill and he saved her life.
She works for him now, 4 days a week, as a volunteer, in exchange for free medical care for the rest of her life.

And there are a hundred more stories like that about him.

to speak out in every way possible to save what has become a very fragile to non existent democracy. Three cheers to this good man. If he had spoken of something medical it would be a diff story. I suppose it could be spun, insanity is a medical condition and like most pugs this patient was totally insane. My diagnosis is that he needs an exhaustive colonoscopy procedure with some very primitive equipment.

18. That is the real issue for a lot of white men and women voting for PalinCaine
only a few of those will admit that it is skin color that they are voting on.

This election is about race. It is about a generational difference in racial attitudes, and it is about whether we are going to move forward into a truly multi-racial new republic, or back to an intolerant, semi-theocratic know-nothing republic in decline, descending into increasingly authoritarian patterns of behavior in an increasingly corrupt and dysfunctional and bankrupt system. The future, if we decide wrong, does not look bright.

63. It ain't just the ingorant asswipe vote.
I concede your point about those votes: they weren't ours to begin with and aren't likely to be democratic votes until even the self-retarded get that the other side is bending them over and laughing about it.

However, I put forth the following proposition: white suburban voters, educated white suburban voters, educated middle class non-rural white suburban voters voting PalinCaine, are doing so in many cases because, consciously or not, they cannot vote for the smart black man running for president and so, despite the manifest corrupt incompetence of the republican party, despite the fact that McCain is a senile fool and Palin is an ignorant dangerous radical loon, they are going to pull the R lever.

What you've said gives a good explanation for WHY the patient felt he could reveal his prejudices to the doctor. The educated, moneyed asswipe figures the doctor is probably just like him because he (the doctor) is probably white, prosperous, middle-aged. I've had supposedly intelligent rethugs automatically assume I'm one of them because of similar factors. It's like they assume we're all a club and we're all harboring racist fears, so they give their signal that "it's OK to let me know you agree." Wink-wink, nudge in the ribs.

Slimebags.

78. It's not about race to a lot of voters;
but most younger people who didn't grow up caring about skin color, the issue won't even register. That's how it was for me until my grandmother (lifelong democratic voter) brought it up and I realized that for some of the older people who have racism ingrained in them it will be an issue. In her case she says going to vote Obama after my brother and I called her out on the racism, because really - why is skin color a reason to vote or not vote for someone? It's not, it should be about the issues. I think that there's enough of us talking to people like her to make any sort of impact race would have a moot point.

I don't think we could have found a better human being to represent us than Barack Obama.

79. Nope. He has recently changed every position he has ever had in his public life.
He has shown he will say, or do, anything to win the White House - even if that means catering to racists. Look at who he picked for VP and as another poster said, he even opposed MLK Day. We didn't have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in Arizona until after a tourist boycott in 1992.

108. Amen. As an Arizonan I used to, at least, respect John McCain
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 11:53 PM by Miss Chybil
even though I didn't agree with him. Whenever I wrote his office I ALWAYS got a letter back. I never liked the answer, but he sent the letter. Jon Kyl has never answered any of my letters. Anyway, I used to respect McCain, but he lost me when he bowed to Bush after the South Carolina thing and he's gone downhill for me ever since. Actually, lately, he's just gone off the cliff. He has sold his soul. You are exactly right.

59. Was at lunch today with a friend who leans repub, but am working on her,
but anyway, our friend the owner of this establishment comes over as always and fills us in on his impending divorce and his selling of the restaurant we're in. Conversation is moving along when he says that his girlfriend, and I'm thinking his girlfriend??, I didn't know he was even seeing anyone prior to today, has two kids a boy 8 and a girl 11 and that they're half black that their father was black. I go "you're kidding me how cool is that" and my friend kinda looks a little dismayed and I say well congratulations, good for you and you're gonna vote for Senator Obama aren't ya??? and he says well my whole family have been republicans all their life but I refuse to vote for mccain. I slap him on the back and say good, one more for the good side and my friend just kinda rolls her eyes. I smile and he, the owner says that he just might. I probably shouldn't have said that but what the heck, he was a good father to his own two sons who are 20 and 21 and I just kinda blurt it out. Am still working on my friend. We've never talked politics at any length though, I just might have to start working a lot harder on her.

Yes, can you believe it? A doctor, who's humble?! Quite a rarity. (I was married to a doctor for 34 years who definitely
did not fit into that category).

In fact, during our talk today he got onto the subject of taxes. As a naturalized citizen from another country, he said he "likes" paying his taxes.
I have never heard anyone say that in my life! He said, "I like driving on nice roads, and sending my kids to school and having the streets plowed
when it snows. I like having highways to go places and garbage picked up. So I don't mind paying for that, it's only right. But he said what he doesn't
like is paying for bridges to nowhere.

116. Lucky!
My sister, black, had her doctor, white, tried to convince her to vote for McCain. Well, no, it was more like slamming Obama, upset that he will raise taxes. She politely told him, "Maybe for you but not for me." Up until now, she's raved that he's the best doctor ever but she's now looking for another doctor.

even consider voting for a Democrat, nor would virtually any other doctor I've known.
Most of them want to protect their money, bottom line. All the other issues are immaterial.

I'm sure there are other broad-minded, liberal doctors in this country; I just haven't met them.

130. After Obama's elected, let's write a thank you note & publish papers nationwide on 11/5:
Dear Racist,

Thank you for all the additional donations to Barack Obama that you inspired. Remember that nasty little slur
against Barack that you made to your doctor/butcher/mechanic/neighbor/co-worker, thinking that because
you shared the same skin color you shared the same prejudices?

Your ignorance and small-minded bigotry helped pour thousands and thousands of dollars into Obama's campaign.
After hearing your hateful comments, many people went to their checkbooks-- many for the first time ever--
and donated to help elect Obama. You, yes you, inspired them to help erase the vile stain of prejudice that
still taints our country.

Lucky for you, Barack Obama is a truly good man and he will be working to help EVERY AMERICAN to live better
and realize their dreams, regardless of how much melanin is in their skin.

So, thanks again for inspiring others to help put Obama in the White House. By 2012, we sincerely hope you'll
be ready to help re-elect him by giving money directly instead of just inspiring others!

Sincerely,

Your fellow citizens

:)

143. The stories are endless.
My mother told me last night that they entertained old friends. An Armenian couple who had always been staunch republicans. We're talking 80+ year olds. The husband may not be moving far from his conservative positions, but my mom had a private discussion with his wife, and she is definitely voting for Obama.

Although being in California, this is not as significant as someone in Florida, or other similar places.

The theme is still the same, though. Coming together for a common good. And I think America may be finding a new direction.

147. What About Patient Privacy?
I work in the field of health care and I am appalled that any doctor would share that sort of information with another patient. It's not just medical information that should not be shared but he should not be telling another patient the wealth status of another patient.

If I went to the doctor and I found out that he was discussing anything that was discussed during our visit - health related or not - I'd be notifying the authorities.

HIPAA, anyone?

153. Nope.
How would the doctor know that his patient is wealthy? This just falls in the category of gossip. It has nothing to do with his health, and none of it was said in confidence. If repub gratuitously treats his doctor to his own political opinions, he can't complain if the doctor shares with others. I don't think you will find any lawyer who would like to take this case.

Now, if he said this in a confessional (which I totally recommend), he may have some expectation of privacy.

154. How Did the OP Know the Patient Was Wealthy?
It had to come from the doctor. A doctor or any health care professional should not be talking to another patient about a conversation he had with another patient, personal or health wise.

Whatever I tell my doctor in the course of my office visit is between the doctor and me and I would be beyond angry if I found out my doctor was speaking to another patient about me.

It's not only wrong, it's against HIPAA policies.

195. I have no clue who that person was. And, guess what? I was married to an orthopaedic surgeon for
34 years, and neither he nor any of his associates would think twice about discussing things that happened with their patients.
Not their diagnoses, not their personal details, but their experiences or opinions? All the time!

For example, something like: 'I had a patient come in today who collects old sports cars. Blah, blah, blah.'
or "A patient came in with a gunshot wound he said he got from a relative. When he left, he said, "Wait till
you see my brother."

You think those (actual) examples should be reported to HIPAA?

C'mon now.

There isn't a doctor in the world who doesn't say, "I had a patient today who..." and then goes on to say
