Michelle Obama: Don't vote because 'she's cute'
By MIKE BAKER – 14 hours ago
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Michelle Obama asked voters Thursday to make their choice on the issues, not because, "I like that guy" or, "she's cute." …..

Michelle Obama's remarks came at a women's roundtable on the economy. She told the audience of 600 that her husband is the only candidate focused on equal pay, health care, affordable college, teacher recruitment and other issues of concern to women. She said that's what the election should be about. …..

Author, poet and former Clinton backer Maya Angelou capped Michelle Obama's outreach by introducing her on stage at an event Thursday in Greensboro.

"We need you," Michelle Obama told the women she addressed in Charlotte. "Our families need you. Our country needs you." ….

Eleanor Brawley, 75, of Charlotte said Michelle Obama's speech convinced her that the Democratic candidate is better suited to handle issues important to women. "I've always been described as a feminist," she said, "and I don't see Sarah Palin as a feminist." …..

It seems to me that the corporate media is focusing far more on Sarah Palin, than on the sum total of strong female democratic leaders. In particular, there is almost no coverage on network/cable news about Michelle Obama. As I write this, there was one exception: Mourning Joe Scarborough just played a clip of Michelle’s speech from yesterday, and made some negative comments about it.

In their attempts to divide the democratic party, the republicans are using the media to try to confuse the issues at stake. For example, yesterday I saw a female republican operative saying that female democrats are failing women in America by not supporting Sarah Palin. She noted that democratic women are wrong to vote for the democratic ticket, based on values, rather than the republican ticket, based on the opportunity to "advance" women by putting Palin in the office of the vice president.

That is, of course, lame.

Michelle Obama will, as First Lady, do far more to advance the issues that women and men value in our society than Sarah Palin could do if she were triplets. I remember this past spring, when my family watched Michelle Obama speak for the first time, and my son said, "Wow! This lady should really be president!" And I remember watching my 14-year old daughter when Michelle Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention, and seeing how inspired she was by that powerful speech.

I know that I ask for a lot of favors here on DU. I appreciate how many of the members of this progressive/liberal community are willing to take the time to lend a hand. Today, I have another request.

Please take a minute and e-mail Rachel Maddow at MSNBC and ask her to have Michelle Obama on her show. Do this for not only my daughters, but for the sake of all of our daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts, grandmothers, neighbors, and for our sons, brothers, etc.

rachel@msnbc.com

Thank you for your consideration.

Your friend,
H2O Man

In addition to everything you've mentioned above, Rachel'd have an excuse to replay that hysterical footage of McCain hemming & hawing about coverage for birth control...

6. Right.
There is another interesting thing about the media, which tends to be true on both the local and national level: if a story is introduced on one station, or in one paper, the others will usually follow it. So in introducing a story, one should decide between going with the media source which is likely to be the most positive, or the least positive, and then expand from there.

Rachel Maddow would, I think, be the ideal place for getting the media to re-focus on the actual issues at stake in this election.

2. I've always said that we get two for one with Obama.
How could anyone not want that? I like the idea that Michelle is first confidante. She's capable in her own regard and when added to Obama 1 plus 1 equals so much more than two.

16. Something
funny I heard on NPR yesterday , an american teacher made a comment in regards to the advancement of woman due to Palins nomination and she said that she thought it was fitting that Palin was nominated for the VP because the country has a long history of nominating men who are unqualified to hold office so why not add an unqualified woman to the list.

The intelligent liberal women I have spoken to find it insulting that the republicans would assume that a sex organ could make the difference in the vote rather than the issues they stand for. I think what is interesting though is the focus on Palin in regards to the lack of focus on McCain. It has created a situation where the undecided voters can easily overlook the weakness of his platform because it is simply not being discussed. I am not looking to trample anyones religious beliefs but I have great hesitation in the idea of an evangelical holding high office much in the same manner most people have great reserve over fanatics in other religions. It brings about a level of "dark age" thinking that is not healthy for our country, or our world.

17. Hmm... the media is stupid to ignore Michelle Obama...
I say this because I think there is a very important reason why... They don't understand why Barack calls her the 'Closer'. She closes the sell behind her husband. He brings in the proposal and she brings in the pen! McCain and Palin are so busy bashing Barack and Biden that they have totally forgotten about Michelle and the other women with her in the background.

Oh... this is so funny because it is obvious what is going on. Remember months ago when Bush and McCain had a fundraiser in his home state. Michelle showed up not to far from where they were and had a secret luncheon/meeting and then she left with the words, 'We'll be back!' Ha ha ha... oh this is too funny. McCain and Palin are fools to ignore Michelle. She is staying in the background for a reason and I get the feeling the reason will become quite clear in October. She is no doubt having her own townhall meetings with women who have yet to decide who to support for President. Also, I wouldn't be surprise to see Jill Biden, Kathleen Kennedy as well as the other lovely women from the Democratic Party doing the same thing.

This is a game of chess after all! While Barack and Joe keep McCain and Palin busy and distracted, with the help of friends like Kerry, Gore, Clinton... Michelle in the background works with the others to dig a pit for McCain and Palin to fall in. The famous 'two side attack' is what is going on here. McCain and Palin think they have the women in their backpocket while Michelle slowly cuts a hole in their pockets. By the time they figure out what the hell is going on they will realize it is far too late to stop it! I can't believe how stupidly the McCain campaign is being run. Geez... it is like Obama is fighting Hilliary all over again only this time it is worst. At least, Hilliary was worthy challenge... McCain and Palin are just plain pathetic.

37. Right.
I'm thinking that the women (and men) who are seeing Michelle Obama in person, or seeing reports in their local media, have to take note of the fact the national media is ignoring her. And this, after her amazing speech at the convention. I am confident that it is not only the folks on DU that recognize the media's failure to present the people and issues that are important in the election.

19. See this October's cover of MORE magazine
a magazine aimed at us women of an, 'ahem', certain age. It's Michelle Obama! Powerful image of her as a strong woman. I can't wait to have her as our First Lady. She will be a great role model for all women.
And love their kids (just had to throw that it, although it isn't as important as the election, but dang, they are cute, and it will be nice to have a real family back in the WH again).

I'm sure she must have been speaking of herself. There is nothing "cute" about Sarah W. Palin. She is a heinous witch. You can't be that ugly on the inside without it showing through to the outside. I thought she was lovely until I heard her speak her pea-brain mind.

Another DUer, O.M.B.inOhio (I MUST give props for this!) called Palin.... Sarah W. Palin! I think we should try to make this stick!

28. I wonder if the "cute" remark is in reference to Barack calling her cute when he appeared
via satellite at the convention after she spoke. The next day here in KC, he asked us in the audience if we had seen the Michelle the night before and he repeated that she was cute. Then he said, "That never hurts." He was so proud of her.

Treating her with so much love and respect. McCain, on the other hand, referred to his wife using a different word. It has four letters and begins with "C" but it in no way should be confused with love and/or respect.

You could very well be right. I never once thought she was referring to Palin. "The guy you like" and the "cute" one are CLEARLY the Obamas!

I just can't "like" McCain. I pity him more than anything.
