CBS4/SurveyUSA Florida Poll: McCain 51%, Obama 45%

McCain Opens 6 Point Lead In New CBS4 Poll

McCain Builds Lead In Northern Florida; Obama Ahead In Southeast Part Of The State

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A new CBS4/SurveyUSA poll shows Republican presidential nominee John McCain leads Democratic rival Barack Obama by 6 points in the battleground state of Florida.

51 percent of those surveyed statewide said they would vote for McCain, compared to Obama's 45 percent. The lead is outside the margin of error for the poll, which was +/- 3.8 percent.

The news looks even more ominous for Senator Obama when the state is broken down by region. Senator Obama is carrying southeast Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. But, the race is a tie in central Florida, and in all of the other regions of the state, McCain is carrying a comfortable lead.

SurveyUsa reported that in northwest Florida, McCain had led by 14 points in a similar poll conducted six weeks ago. Today, McCain has built that lead to 41 points. The numbers for McCain get even better in northeast Florida, where McCain's lead has exploded from 8 points to 46 points.

But, McCain has lost ground among female voters in Florida, even after choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate.

14. this is bad news for me..
i am gonna have to work harder to register more ppl.. This weekend i am going to volunteer for a Get out the Vote Registration drive in the Latino Community...

We can't have McCain win this state. Registering ppl to vote is key to overcome the north side of the state.

I JUST CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN..
Obama MUST stress to the ppl of Florida McCain plans for the Employer Health Insurance benefits. This will hit independents on the head.
He must do it!!

but the state is notorious for tightening up towards election day.

have we not figured that out yet? After all of these elections?>

ANd who is SurveyUSA, what is their methodology? Who owns it and who do they donate to? Do you know that? Is SurveyUSA another republican PR firm??? You know, the ones that do the polls for the repubs so that the media will use them?

10. the country is tied up , it's meaningless who is ahead where
right now. The polls are only reflecting a momentary popularity contest. With the current economic crisis, voters are paying slightly more attention than usual. However, the game officially starts once the first debate is underway.

29. They are supposedly independent/non-partisan
I did some research, and saw that the owner, Jay H. Leve, worked 7 years for Knight-Ridder. Knight-Ridder sold out their papers to right wingers. They also do a lot of research for local firms/affiliates, so IMO bias can get in the way of their polls, depending on the client. I wouldn't worry about Florida yet.

in the 11/04/08 general election.

No explanation of how they made that determination.

30. What's going on in Florida?
What is really going on in Florida? Survey USA is not the only pollster showing a trend in McCain's favor. Quinnipiac shows the same thing. Have McCain/Palin been active in Florida? Any local issues we need to know about? What about the latinos? Could the fact that Florida was penalized in the democratic primaries have affected the enthusiasm among democratic voters?

Yes, I've understood that. There are many paths that lead to 270 and the path through Florida is one of the more expensive ones. The fact that Florida shows a different trend just made me curious.

For a Democrat to win Florida he needs to sweep blue South Florida, be competitive in purple Central Florida, and mitigate his or losses in red North Florida...

And it's not just the Panhandle, looks like the Jacksonville area is just as bad.

The other question is why would McAin't be gaining here, and gaining so big?
There hasn't been any good news for his campaign in a while.
Is it ALL a result of the megachurches stumping for McAint?

I think we can win without Florida. Looks like we'll have to.

44. I Would Have To Look At The Demographics Of Duval County
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 12:42 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
The Panhandle is heavily Republicant...Panama City is not called the "Red Neck Riviera" for nothing...

Duval County has a large African American population that is predominately Democratic..."Everybody" else in Jax is Republicant...

Even when Clinton won FL in 96 there were North Florida counties where he reeieved 27% of the vote...He did play well in purple Central Florida...

North FL reminds me of antebellum south. It is not an exotic or young part of the state. I don't even understand why the panhandle is FL versus Alabama or Ga. (I guess I need to read some FL history.)
