State Jobless Rate Breakdown
Posted By: Mark Hedlund

9-19-08

SACRAMENTO - New sobering statistics released by the state Friday show California unemployment jumping to 7.7 % in August. The last time the jobless rate was that high was in March of 1996, according to the California Employment Development Department.

That rate is an increase of 2.2 % compared to August of last year. The hardest hit job sector is construction, with jobs in the building industry dropping by 8.9 %. Other job categories posting declines are manufacturing, trade-transportation-utilities, information and finance.

Sacramento County's unemployment is exactly the same as the statewide average, with 54,300 counted as being unemployed. Some nearby counties, however, have among the highest jobless rates in the state.

Yuba County's unemployment has hit 12.2 %. Also in double digits are Stanislaus (10.6 %) and San Joaquin (10.2 %). Sutter, Glenn and Stanislaus Counties all have unemployment at 10.5 %.

Ten of California's 58 counties now have reached double digits in jobless rates. The worst is Imperial County, where one out of every four people in the job force is out of work.

1. Maybe Arnie can shake things up, fix this.
Just as he did with our budget and economy.

3. The IT field isn't so happy either.
My husband has been looking for about three months now and can't find anything. Have a question or problem and have to call EDD? Forget about it! I had been trying to get through for a couple of months and their phone system doesn't allow you to wait in the queue. It just tells you they're too busy and to call back later and hangs up on you. I finally called Arnie's office irate and was connected that way. Ridiculous! Yes, unemployment is so high, the department can't even handle it.

The most frustrating part is applying for jobs, never hearing back, and then seeing the job re-posted over and over again. WTF? My husband is just a resume in a sea of resumes I guess.

4. Those rates are really likely double
...since the new way of counting unemployment eliminates all but those who are actively filing claims. Scary numbers even at the official rate, especially given the cost of living in Cali.
