SACRAMENTO - New sobering statistics released by the state Friday show California unemployment jumping to 7.7 % in August. The last time the jobless rate was that high was in March of 1996, according to the California Employment Development Department.
That rate is an increase of 2.2 % compared to August of last year. The hardest hit job sector is construction, with jobs in the building industry dropping by 8.9 %. Other job categories posting declines are manufacturing, trade-transportation-utilities, information and finance.
Sacramento County's unemployment is exactly the same as the statewide average, with 54,300 counted as being unemployed. Some nearby counties, however, have among the highest jobless rates in the state.
Yuba County's unemployment has hit 12.2 %. Also in double digits are Stanislaus (10.6 %) and San Joaquin (10.2 %). Sutter, Glenn and Stanislaus Counties all have unemployment at 10.5 %.
Ten of California's 58 counties now have reached double digits in jobless rates. The worst is Imperial County, where one out of every four people in the job force is out of work.
