Could John McCain have shoved his foot any further into his mouth?
Here's his take on health care reform, from the Sept/Oct 2008 issue of Contingencies, an actuarial magazine:

Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.

Not only does he admit that he has been an integral part of creating the deregulated environment that led to the current (and by no means finished) financial crisis, but he promises to use the same approach to "solve" the health care crisis. Gonna be hard to spin this one.

This is the winner quote, but more at: http://www.contingencies.org/septoct08/mccain.pdf

1. It's complicated.
But somehow he shoved his foot in his mouth while his head was up his ass.

Not everyone can do that.

10. He already did that
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/20/mccain-claimed-privatizat_n_127984.html

But as usual, he was for it, but now he's against it. It really is mind-boggling that McCain and Republicans in general still don't seem to have tumbled to the fact that we're in a freaking information age, and that everything they say or do is on the record for anyone to find. They still keep lying about what they've done in the past and think they'll never be called on it.

12. Well that's ONE way to get government-backed health care ... bailouts!
What a dumb idea. But thanks for sharing it, and I hope that SOMEBODY gets that quote noticed!

Raise the prospect of a taxpayer bailout of the health insurance industry to an undecided voter, if you can find one still...

14. And, here is what I love even more - when you look at AIG,
the portion the Feds regulate - the financial services parent company - is what was on its way to bankruptcy. The subsidiary insurance companies are all very solvent with more then sufficient reserves (assets). More than that, with the optional federal charter for banks, which banks are going under? From what I understand, the banks that opted for and are now regulated under the federal charter (meaning they are exempt from state regulation) are the ones that are going under.

State based regulation saved the day. Without those valuable insurance assets, the feds probably would have let AIG go under.
